    Upgrading R5si/R6si to R8r EPN
    and Adding Memory
This c hapter p rovid es the information nec essary to up g rade a Sing le-Carrier
    Cab inet (SCC) Release 5si/Release 5si + memory/Release 6si system with a
TN790 RISC processor to a Release 8 EPN.
The existing SCC PPN is always up grad ed to an EPN. The new multic arrier
c ab inet always serves as the PPN. Up g rad ing to an EPN for a Release 8r
req uires c hang ing , and often restruc turing , the exp ansion interfac e c irc uit p ac ks.
Hard ware c hang es (inc lud ing c arrier rep lac ement in the SCC c ab inet) is
    req uired .
This up g rad e assumes that the Release 8r c ab inet has alread y been installed . If
    not, refer to
DEFINITY Enterp rise Communic ations Server Release 8 Installation
and Test for Multic arrier Cab inets
to install the Release 8r system. Return to this
c hap ter when finished .
In this c hap ter, all oc c urrenc es of Release 5si and Release 5si + memory are
called Release 5si unless a specific c onfiguration is required to differentiate
    b etween p rod uc t offerings.
DEFINITY Enterp rise Communic ations Server Release 8 Ad ministrator’s Guid e
lists Release 8 features and func tions and p rovides the c ommand s, p roc ed ures,
and forms to initialize and ad minister the Release 8r.

    Service Interruption
The up g rad e p roc ess req uires a servic e interruption of ab out 2 hours and must
b e c losely c oord inated with the c ustomer and the loc al ac c ount team.
    Call Management System (CMS)
The CMS link is dropped and restarted during the upgrade. This causes CMS
d ata to b e lost. This d ata loss c an be minimized if the up g rad e is p erformed just
after the last CMS measurement interval.
All measurement d ata is lost d uring the up g rad e (inc lud ing BCMS). If need ed ,
the reports may be printed before the upgrade begins.
CMS c ould ab ort the p roc essing of a c all if a measured trunk that was part of the
c onferenc e d rop p ed off the c all b efore the end of the c all. Customers
exp erienc ing this symp tom and who are running R3V4 CMS should upd ate to
    r3v4ao.e or hig her.
    Preventing Translation Errors
When instruc ted in this c hap ter, p erform the save translation
     c ommand .
Afterward , c hec k for translation errors b efore p roc eed ing with the up g rad e.
    NOTE:
Be sure that the translations g et saved without errors b efore c ontinuing with
    any up g rad e.
If errors are d etec ted , refer to ‘‘No Translations After Upgrade’’
     in Appendix B,
‘‘Troubleshooting an Upgrade’’ to c orrec t the p rob lem. Do not c ontinue with the
up g rad e until the errors are c orrec ted .
    Communication Between Equipment Rooms
For an up g rad e where some of the eq uip ment resid es at a remote loc ation, the
up g rad e ac tivity will b e muc h easier if temp orary c ommunic ations are
estab lished b etween the eq uip ment rooms.
    Contact Network Technicians
The tec hnic ian for eac h p ub lic and p rivate network ac c essed b y the switc h must
be contacted before the upgrade begins. Otherwise, if these technic ians are not
aware of the service interruption caused by the upgrade, it is possible that
network-ac c ess trunk fac ilities will b e b usied out at the far end .

    Relocation of Port Circuit Packs
With the p ossib le exc ep tion of a p ort c irc uit p ac k in slot “ 01” of c arrier “ A” that
must b e moved for a TN570 Exp ansion Interfac e, an up grad e to Release 8
    d oes
    not
c ause p ort c irc uit p ac ks from the Release 5/6si c ontrol c ab inet to b e moved
and manually retranslated . This is b ec ause a Release 5/6si PPN is always
up g rad ed to an EPN. So, d uring the PPN up g rad e to a Release 8r EPN, a
Release 8r exp ansion c ontrol c ab inet (with 14 to 16 availab le p ort slots) always
rep lac es the Release 5/6si c ontrol c ab inet (with 10 availab le p ort slots), provid ing
    a net g ain of from 4 to 6 p ort slots.
    If a p ort c irc uit p ac k d oes resid e in slot “ 01” of c ontrol c ab inet “ A,” the STS
software up g rad e retranslates this c irc uit p ac k to resid e in an emp ty p ort slot in
the new expansion c ontrol c ab inet.
For an up g rad e to a c ritic al reliab ility Release 8r, if a p ort c irc uit p ac k resid es in
slot “ 02” of p ort c ab inet “ B,” the STS software up g rad e retranslates this c irc uit
p ac k to oc c up y another emp ty p ort slot in the new exp ansion c ontrol c ab inet.
To p rovid e maximum hold over for a TN750/B Announc ement c irc uit p ac k that d id
not resid e in the c ontrol c arrier, the STS software up g rade reloc ates this c irc uit
p ac k to oc c up y another emp ty p ort slot in the new exp ansion c ontrol c ab inet.
To ensure reliab le DS1 timing in the up g rad ed Release 8r system, the STS
software up g rad e reloc ates the DS1 c irc uit p ac ks serving as the p rimary and
sec ond ary timing sourc es to oc c upy 2 emp ty p ort slots in the new Release 8r
    PPN .
When c onnec ting ad junc ts to an up g rad ed Release 8r, STS loc ates any new
interfac e c irc uit p ac ks (inc luding TN577 Pac ket Gateway, TN553 Pac ket Data
Line, and TN726B Data Line) in the first availab le slots of the first PPN port
    carrier.
    NOTE:
To find out where STS reloc ated these c irc uit p ac ks, refer to the annotated
‘‘list c onfig uration all that STS p rovides with the new Release 8r removab le
    med ia.
    Usable Circuit Packs
Every c irc uit p ac k used in the up g rad ed Release 8r system must c onform to the
minimum usab le vintag e requirements for Release 8r. Those c irc uit p ac ks
ship p ed in the new Release 8r PPN or ship p ed loose with the new EPN
eq uip ment must meet the usab le vintag e spec ific ations. In add ition, at a p resale
site insp ec tion, the remed iation p roc ess must c hec k the vintag es of every
Release 5/6si circuit pack that will be reused with the Release 8r and replace
those c irc uit p ac ks with unusab le vintag es. Refer to
    Tec hnic al Quarterly,
Referenc e Guid e for Circ uit Pac k Vintag es and Chang e Notic es, for c urrent
information ab out usab le vintages in a Release 8r system.

    Site Inspections
For the p urp oses of a Release 8r up g rade, most Release 5/6si systems are
alread y eq uip p ed with the c orrec t lig htwave transc eivers. Any old er versions of
these c omp onents must b e rep lac ed. The earlier versions of lig htwave
transc eivers inc lud ed the 4-series transc eivers (4A throug h 4F). These
transc eivers sup p orted fib er c onnec tions up to 7,000 feet (2133 m). Ord er the
c orrec t transc eivers ac c ording to a sep arate PEC.
    Power and Ground
The new multic arrier PPN c ab inet or any EPN c ab inet ad d ed for the up g rad e c an
be either AC or DC powered. If an added cabinet is powered differently from the
existing c ab inets, the existing c ab inets d o not have to b e c onverted sinc e mixed
p ower c onfig urations are allowed . However, the system’s p ower and ground
must b e mod ified so the AC p owered c abinets are ground ed to the same
sing le-p oint g round b ar as the DC p owered c ab inets.
    DC Isolator
Eac h manag ement terminal c onnec ted to a DC-p owered c ab inet, b y the
async hronous EIA RS-232 interfac e, req uires a 116A isolator. The isolator is
inserted at the RS-232 interfac e b etween the terminal and the interfac e
c onnec tor to isolate g round between the system and external ad junc ts.
    Emergency Transfer Stations
During routine op eration, the g round for the emerg enc y transfer stations is
d erived from the system’s auxiliary c ab le. Disc onnec t this g round d uring the
up g rad e to d isab le the stations. A g round strap is run to the emerg enc y transfer
p anel. Connec t this strap shortly after removing power and d isc onnec t it just
before restoring power to the upgraded system.
    Converting the Translations
The translations in the Release 5/6si system must b e c op ied to a sp are
translation c ard and sent to Software Tec hnic al Sup p ort (STS) to b e c onverted
and written to a Release 8r removab le med ia. This p roc ess takes 2 weeks. The
Release 8r med ia (inc lud ing 1 with translations) must b e on-site before the
    up g rad e b eg ins. For eac h Release 8r p roc essor, 2 med ia (1 system d isk and 1
b ac kup removab le med ia) must always b e retained on site with the system.

    Software Upgrades
After a software up g rad e, several features req uire sp ec ial attention b ec ause of
sc reen c hang es or p otential naming c onflic ts in the up g rad e p roc ess. Most of
these c hang es and c onflic ts relate either to a software up g rad e from stand ard
ACD to Call Vec toring or to c hang es in the ARS/AAR features to c omp ensate for
inc reasing unc ertainty in the North Americ an numb ering p lan. Also, if ARS is

nec essary to mod ify the Call Typ e field on the ARS Analysis sc reen to “ unk” for all
c all typ es exc ep t “ iop ” or “ int.”
After the up g rad e, the Software Assoc iate should c hec k these forms to ensure
the up g rad ed translations are ap p rop riate for the c ustomer’s need s. Refer to
DEFINITY Enterp rise Communic ations Server Release 8 Ad ministrator’s Guid e,

correct software release. Call p rog ress messag es to the ISDN Gateway may b e
intermittently lost, therefore, this up g rad e must oc c ur at the same time as the
    system up g rad e.

    3-8 Preliminary Procedures
    3
    Preliminary Procedures
During an up g rad e, STS must c onvert the Release 5/6si translations and write
them to a Release 7r or later tap e. The tap e is sent to STS for c onversion. During
this time, the c ustomer should put a freeze on any new translations while the
    sp are tap e is b eing c onverted . If not, b e sure the c ustomer’s switc h ad ministrator
keep s d etailed rec ord s of any translation c hang es mad e during that interval.
These rec ord s will fac ilitate the reassignment of any c hang es after the up g rad e.
The new Release 8r removab le med ia (1 with the c onverted translations, 2 if
    d up lic ated ) must b e on-site b efore the up g rad e beg ins.
Sinc e a new Release 8r PPN is installed during the upg rad e, STS c hang es the
PN numb er of the Release 5/6si PPN to b e c onverted to a Release 8r EPN. To
minimize the renumb ering of PNs and to minimize the rewiring and relab eling of
the MDF, the tap e c onversion assig ns the next PN numb er (after the hig hest
numb ered PN in the system) to the Release 5/6si PPN to b ec ome a Release 8r
EPN. For examp le, if a Release 5/6si system with 2 PNs (a PPN and an EPN) were
up g rad ed to a Release 8r, the tap e c onversion software assig ns PN ‘‘1” to the
new PPN and PN ‘‘3” to the ad d itional EPN d erived from the old Release 5/6si
    PPN .
Make Spare Translation Card and Mail to STS for
    Upgrade
A sp are translation c ard must b e ac q uired from the remed iation b efore
up g rad ing the system. For eac h proc essor, there must always b e 2 translation
c ard s on site with the system. Do not send a system or b ac kup translation c ard to
    STS.
    1. Install the sp are translation c ard into the TN777B on the existing system.
    2. Type save translation
     and press
En te r. This instruc ts the system to write all
translation information from memory to the translation c ard .
    NOTE:

rec orded announc ements. Therefore, d uring the up g rad e, any
    announc ements stored on a TN750/B c irc uit p ac k must b e

    3. Remove the sp are translation c ard and insert the system translation c ard .
