    A call p lac ed  from one telephone to another within the loc al c ommunic ations system. 
    Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
    A pub lic  or p rivate network that p rovid es end -to-end  d ig ital c ommunic ations for all servic es to 
    whic h users have ac cess by a limited  set of stand ard  multip urp ose user-network interfaces 
    d efined  b y the CCITT. Throug h internationally ac c ep ted stand ard  interfac es, ISDN p rovid es dig ital 
    circuit-switc hed  or pac ket-switc hed  c ommunic ations within the network and links to other ISDNs to 
    p rovid e national and  international d igital c ommunic ations. See also

    Network Basic  Rate Interfac e (ISDN-BRI) and Integ rated Servic es Dig ital Network 
    Primary Rate Interfac e (ISDN-PRI).
    Integrated Services Digital Network Basic Rate Interface (ISDN-BRI)
    The interfac e b etween a communications system and  terminal that inc lud es two 64-kb ps 
    B-channels for transmitting  voic e or d ata and  one 16-kb ps D-channel for transmitting assoc iated  
    B-channel c all c ontrol and  out-of-b and  sig naling  information. ISDN-BRI also inc lud es 48 kbp s for 
    transmitting  framing  and D-c hannel c ontention information, for a total interface sp eed  of 192 kb p s. 
    ISDN-BRI serves ISDN terminals and  d igital terminals fitted  with ISDN terminal ad ap ters. See also

    Integrated Services Digital Network Primary Rate Interface (ISDN-PRI)
    The interfac e b etween multip le c ommunic ations systems that in North America inc lud es 24 
    64-kb p s c hannels, correspond ing  to the North Americ an d igital sig nal level-1 (DS1) standard rate 
    of 1.544 Mbp s. The most c ommon arrang ement of channels in ISDN-PRI is 23 64-kbp s B-channels 
    for transmitting  voic e and  d ata and  1 64-kb p s D-channel for transmitting  assoc iated B-c hannel call 
    control and  out-of-band sig naling  information. With nonfac ility-assoc iated  sig naling  (NFAS), 
    ISDN-PRI can include 24 B-c hannels and  no D-channel. See also

    intercept tone
    A tone that ind icates a d ialing  error or denial of the service req uested .
    interface
    A common bound ary b etween two systems or pieces of eq uip ment.
    internal call
    A connection b etween two users within a system.
    International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
    Formerly known as International Teleg rap h and  Telep hone Consultative Committee (CCITT), ITU is 
    an international organization that sets universal stand ard s for d ata c ommunications, inc lud ing  
    ISDN. ITU memb ers are from telec ommunic ations comp anies and org anizations around  the world .

    BCMS measurements that are mad e b y the system. ACD measurements that are mad e external to

    in-use lamp
    A red  light on a multiap p earanc e voic e terminal that lig hts to show whic h c all ap p earanc e will b e 
    selec ted  when the handset is lifted  or which c all ap pearanc e is active when a user is off-hook.

    telemarketing ap plication of call events.
    ISDN trunk
    A trunk administered for use with ISDN-PRI. Also c alled ISDN fac ility.
    ISDN-PRI terminal adapter
    An interface b etween end p oint ap plications and  an ISDN PRI fac ility. ISDN-PRI terminal ad ap ters 
    are c urrently availab le from other vend ors and  are p rimarily d esig ned  for vid eo conferenc ing  
    ap p lic ations. Ac c ord ing ly, currently availab le terminal ad apters adap t the two p airs of vid eo cod ec  
    d ata (V.35) and  d ialing  (RS-366) ports to an ISDN PRI fac ility.

    with a telep hone or data terminal.
    link
    A transmitter-rec eiver c hannel that c onnects two systems.
    link-access procedure on the D-channel (LAPD)
    A link-layer p rotoc ol on the ISDN-BRI and ISDN-PRI d ata-link layer (level 2). LAPD provid es d ata 
    transfer between two d evic es, and error and  flow c ontrol on multip le logic al links. LAPD is used  for 
    sig naling  and low-sp eed  pac ket d ata (X.25 and  mode 3) on the sig naling  (D-) channel and  for 
    mod e-3 data c ommunic ations on a b earer (B-) channel.
    LINL
    Loc al ind irect neig hb or link
    local area network (LAN)
    A networking  arrang ement desig ned  for a limited  g eog raphical area. Generally, a LAN is limited in 
    rang e to a maximum of 6.2 miles and  p rovid es hig h-sp eed  c arrier service with low error rates.

    logical link
    The communic ations p ath b etween a p roc essor and  a BRI terminal.
    loop-start trunk

    call, the system waits for a sig nal on the loop formed  by the trunk leads b efore send ing  the d ig its 
    of the c alled  numb er.

    main distribution frame (MDF)
    A devic e that mounts to the wall inside the system eq uipment room. The MDF p rovid es a 
    connec tion p oint from outsid e telep hone lines to the PBX switc h and  to the insid e telep hone 
    stations.
    main-satellite-tributary
    A private network c onfiguration that c an either stand  alone or ac cess an ETN. A main switch 
    p rovid es interconnection, via tie trunks, with one or more sub tend ing  switc hes, c alled  satellites; all 
    attend ant p ositions for the main/satellite config uration; and  ac c ess to and  from the pub lic  network. 
    To a user outsid e the c omp lex, a main/satellite config uration ap p ears as one switc h, with one listed  
    d irec tory number (LDN). A trib utary switch is connec ted  to the main switc h via tie trunks, b ut has 
    its own attend ant p ositions and LDN.
    maintenance
    Activities involved  in keep ing  a telecommunications system in p rop er working c ond ition: the 
    d etection and  isolation of software and  hard ware faults, and  automatic  and  manual rec overy from 
    these faults.
    management terminal
    The terminal that is used  b y the system administrator to administer the switc h. The terminal may 
    also b e used  to ac c ess the BCMS feature.
    major alarm
    An ind ication of a failure that has c aused  critic al d egrad ation of servic e and requires immed iate 
    attention. Major alarms are automatically d isp layed  on LEDs on the attend ant c onsole and 
    maintenanc e or alarming  c irc uit p ac k, log g ed  to the alarm log , and rep orted to a remote 
    maintenanc e fac ility, if ap p lic ab le.
    Manual-In work mode
    One of four ag ent work modes: the mod e in which an agent is read y to p roc ess another c all 
    manually.

    A cap ab ility that provid es shared  c onversion resources (mod ems and d ata mod ules) for

    a c onversion resourc e into the path of a d ata call. Mod em pooling  serves b oth outg oing  and

    modular processor data module (MPDM)
    A processor d ata mod ule (PDM) that c an b e c onfig ured  to p rovid e several kind s of interfac es

    d esig nates sig naling  used  in the United  States and in c ountries outsid e the United  States.
    multiplexer
    A devic e used  to comb ine a numb er of ind ivid ual channels into a sing le c ommon b it stream for 
    transmission.
    multiplexing
    A process whereb y a transmission fac ility is d ivid ed into two or more channels, either b y sp litting  
    the freq uenc y b and  into a number of narrower b and s or by divid ing  the transmission channel into

    req uired  for a DC-powered  sing le-c arrier c ab inet, a fifth rec tifier mod ule is installed for b ackup.
    N x DS0
    N x DS0, equivalently referred  to as N x 64 kb ps, is an emerg ing  stand ard  for wid eb and  calls 
    sep arate from H0, H11, and  H12 ISDN c hannels. The emerg ing  N x DS0 ISDN multirate c ircuit 
    mod e b earer servic e will p rovid e c irc uit-switc hed  c alls with d ata-rate multip les of 64 kb p s up to 
    1536 kb p s on a T1 facility or up  to 1920 kb p s on an E1 fac ility. In the switc h, N x DS0 channels will

    other fac ilities that share the D-c hannel are c onfigured  without D-channels. If D-channel b ackup is 
    used , two facilities are c onfigured  to have D-c hannels (one D-c hannel on each fac ility), and  the 
    other facilities that share the D-c hannels are config ured without D-c hannels.
