    Upgrading R5r/R6r/R7r to R8r
    without Adding Memory
This chapter provides the information necessary to upgrade the software from a
DEFINITY ECS Release 5r, Release 6r, or Release 7r to a Release 8r system
without ad d ing memory. The c hap ter also p rovid es information on rep lac ing the
tap e d rive with the op tic al d rive and replac ing the UN332B MSSNET c irc uit p ac k
with the UN332C c irc uit p ac k, whic h is req uired for the op tic al drive.
The p roc ed ures step throug h a software and hard ware up g rade that c an b e d one
on either a stand ard reliab ility or a hig h or c ritic al reliab ility system.
There are many c onfig urations of DEFINITY ECS Release 5r/6r/7r in the field , and
eac h system c an have a uniq ue c onfig uration. This b ook ad d resses the most
c ommon c onfig urations. Also refer to the following b ooks:

    Service Interruption
The up g rad e p roc ess req uires 2 non–c all-p reserving servic e interrup tions in a
stand ard reliability system and must b e c losely c oord inated with the c ustomer
and the loc al ac c ount team.
    Call Management System (CMS)
The CMS link is dropped and restarted during the upgrade. This causes CMS
d ata to b e lost. This d ata loss c an be minimized if the up g rad e is p erformed just
after the last CMS measurement interval.
All measurement d ata is lost d uring the up g rad e (inc lud ing BCMS). If need ed ,
the reports may be printed before the upgrade begins.
CMS c ould ab ort the p roc essing of a c all if a measured trunk that was part of the
c onferenc e d rop p ed off the c all b efore the end of the c all. Customers
exp erienc ing this symp tom and who are running R3V4 CMS should upd ate to
    r3v4a or hig her.
    Software Compatibility and Translation Errors
Before starting the up g rad e, always c hec k the Software Release Letter that
ac c omp anies the system removable med ia. Translation c orrup tion will oc c ur if
inc ompatib le software is load ed .
After load ing the new software, c hec k for translation errors. To d o this, log in and
    c hec k for a “ Translation Corrup tion Detec ted ” messag e b efore c ontinuing with
the up g rad e p roc ess.
If errors are d etec ted , refer to ‘‘No Translations After Upgrade’’
     in Appendix B,
‘‘Troubleshooting an Upgrade’’. Do not c ontinue with the up g rad e until the errors
    are corrected.
    Usable Circuit Packs
Every circuit pac k used in the Release 8 system must conform to the minimum
usab le vintag e req uirements for that system. At a p resale site insp ec tion, the
remed iation p roc ess c hec ks the vintag es of existing c irc uit p ac ks to b e reused in
the Release 8 system. Rep lac e all unusab le vintag e c irc uit pac ks with c urrent
    vintag es.
    Refer to
Technical Quarterly, Referenc e Guid e for Circ uit Pac k Vintag es, Chang e
    Notic es,
and to the Software Release Letter for information ab out usab le c irc uit
p ac k vintag es. For information about usab le vintag es of non-U.S. c irc uit p ac ks,
refer to the ITAC Tec h Alert from your reg ional d istrib utor.
