The DEFINITY AUDIX system offers the Telec ommunic ations
Devic e for the Deaf (TDD) announc ement set for sub sc ribers
who use TTYs. The Multiling ual feature makes it possible to
p rovid e the TDD announc ement set on the same DEFINITY
AUDIX system as voic e announc ement sets, satisfying the
messaging needs of both groups of users with one system.nThe TDD announc ement set c an
    be installed on the DEFINITY
AUDIX system just like any other
    announc ement set.
nThe TDD announc ement set and a
voic ed announc ement set c an b e

    Applications
Use of the TDD announc ement set enab les emp loyers to c omp ly with the
Americ ans With Disab ilities Ac t (ADA) b y making reasonab le ac c ommod ations
for hearing-imp aired emp loyees. (Cost-c onsc ious emp loyers should note that a
sing le Multiling ual DEFINITY AUDIX system is able to ac c ommodate the need s of
voic e-mail users who req uire a sp oken announc ement set and hearing -imp aired
users who req uire a TDD announc ement set.) All that a sub sc rib er or c aller
need s is a standard stand -alone, ac oustic ally-c oupled TTY along with a
touc h-tone telep hone. Both the touc h-tone keyp ad and the TTY keyb oard are
need ed for TDD c ommunic ations with the DEFINITY AUDIX system.
    Considerations
There are a numb er of c onsid erations for using the TDD announc ement set with
    the DEFINITY AUDIX system.
nName Record by Subscriber: Any user who interac ts with the DEFINITY
AUDIX system primarily using a TTY should rec ord their name using a
TTY. TTY users have 12 sec ond s to type in their name. The system
ad ministrator should not voic e the names of TTY users.
    nA d m i n i s t ra t o r TTY: In some situations, the system ad ministrator may need
to rec ord g reetings, messag es, names, and c ustom announc ements for
TTY users. To rec ord these, the system administrator need s a TTY; a TTY
with a b uffer is rec ommend ed sinc e the system ad ministrator may need to
ed it g reeting s, messag es, and announc ements b efore d ownload ing them
to the DEFINITY AUDIX system. (See the user’s g uide that c omes with the
TTY for instruc tions on using the TTY.) It also is rec ommend ed that the
TDD announc ement set be running when rec ord ing TTY g reeting s,
    messag es, and announc ements.
nGo Ahead: A stand ard abb reviation in TTY c ommunic ations, known by all
exp erienc ed TTY users, is
GA. This stand s for Go Ahead and means, in
essenc e, It’s your turn to transmit. The GA p romp t is p art of the DEFINITY
AUDIX TDD announc ement set and is used in p lac e of the aud ib le tone
that follows rec ord at the tone in the sp oken announc ement set.
nMod e sync hronization p rob lems and solutions: TTYs use the Baudot
c ommunic ations p rotoc ol in whic h the same five-b it c od e c an rep resent
either a letter or a non-alp hab etic c harac ter, suc h as a numb er or fig ure.
(For examp le, the binary c od e 00001 is both the letter E and the numb er
3.) This sharing of five-b it c od es is mad e p ossib le b y having two mod es, a
letters mod e and a numb ers/fig ures mode.
If a rec eiving TTY is set to letters mod e (b y rec eiving the five-bit c od e
11111), then the TTY assumes all sub seq uent five-b it c harac ter c od es
rec eived are letters. By c ontrast, if a rec eiving TTY is set to
numb ers/fig ures mode (b y rec eiving the five-b it c ode 11011), then the TTY
assumes all subseq uent five-b it c harac ter c od es rec eived are numbers

    293 Considerations
and fig ures. This is imp ortant: when a TTY is not in the same mod e as the
d evic e that is transmitting to it, the c harac ters that d isp lay on the rec eiving
TTY will make no sense to the user.
All DEFINITY AUDIX TDD announc ements c ontain the ap p rop riate mod e
reset c od es to ensure that the rec eiving TTY stays mod e-sync hronized
with the DEFINITY AUDIX system d uring announc ement p layb ac k. It is,
however, the user’s resp onsib ility to ensure mod e sync hronization when
rec ord ing names, g reeting s, messag es, and c ustom announc ements.
nMod e sync hronization when rec ord ing g reeting s, messag es, names, and
    c ustom announc ements
: TTY users should follow these g uid elines when
rec ord ing g reeting s, messag es, names, and c ustom announc ements to
keep the rec eiving TTY in the ap p rop riate mod e.
Some TTYs have b oth a letters key and a numb ers/fig ures key for
switc hing to the ind ic ated mod e. If the first c harac ter in your rec ording is a
letter, p ress the letters key b efore you typ e anything else; or, if the first
c harac ter in your rec ord ing is a numb er or fig ure, p ress the
numb ers/fig ures key b efore you typ e anything else.
Most TTYs do not have a letters key and a numb ers/fig ures key. If you d o
not have sep arate letters and numb ers/fig ures keys, sync hronization of
mod es is more inc onvenient but c an b e ac c omp lished in the following
    way:
    — If the first c harac ter you need to typ e is a letter, enter a slash (/);
then p ress the sp ac e b ar a few times b efore you start typ ing . This
c auses the system to reset to letters mod e.
    — If the first c harac ter you need to typ e is a numb er or fig ure, typ e x
    ;
then p ress the sp ac e b ar a few times b efore you start typ ing . This
c auses the system to reset to numb ers/fig ures mod e.
nGeneral g uid elines on g enerating g reeting s and c ustom announc ements:
TTY users need to use b oth the TTY keyb oard and the touc h-tone
telep hone keyp ad . The instruc tions c ontained in c ustomized
announc ements and mailb ox g reeting s must make it c lear whic h devic e to
use. You mig ht want to use
dial when the user need s to use the telep hone
    keyp ad and
typ e when the user need s to use the TTY keyboard .
When using a TTY to typ e d irec tly to the DEFINITY AUDIX system, the
DEFINITY AUDIX system c aptures and p reserves any hesitations in
typing s, missp elling s, and so on. For this reason, it is rec ommend ed that
system ad ministrators use a TTY with a b uilt-in b uffer and c ompletely ed it
the g reeting or announc ement b efore c alling the DEFINITY AUDIX system
to d ownload the b uffer. See your TTY user’s g uid e for instruc tions on
ed iting and d ownload ing the TTY b uffer.
nTransmission Prob lems: If TTY users see what they c onsider to be more
than the normal numb er of typ ing errors in information d isp layed b y the
DEFINITY AUDIX system, the transmission from the DEFINITY AUDIX
system may b e too soft. Dial to make the transmission loud er.

    294 Considerations
If the DEFINITY AUDIX system d oes not pic k up the touc h-tone key
p resses, transmission with the DEFINITY AUDIX system may b e too loud.
Dial to make the transmission softer.
nHandset Ad ap tor: Certain telep hone hand sets, suc h as the R-typ e
hand set used on many Luc ent Tec hnolog ies b usiness telep hones, will not
work reliably with TTY ac oustic c oup lers that were intend ed for more
trad itional typ es of hand sets. The Luc ent Tec hnolog ies Sp ec ial Need s
Center is ab le to p rovide ad ap tors. Contac t your Luc ent Tec hnolog ies
    Ac count Executive.
nCorrec ting inap p rop riate mod e shifts: A receiving TTY may be placed in
the wrong mod e und er the following c irc umstanc es:
    — The TTY user d ials ahead or d ials throug h an announc ement
rec eived from the DEFINITY AUDIX system.
    — A TDD message or greeting rec eived from the DEFINITY AUDIX
system was rec ord ed without ap p rop riate reset c od es.
Althoug h this prob lem c an b e annoying , resetting the rec eiving TTY to the
c orrec t mod e is a fairly straig htforward p roc ess. On TTYs that have
sp ec ific mod e-reset keys, press the ap prop riate key. Do the following on
TTYs that d o not have mod e-reset keys:
    — Typ e any number or fig ure to shift a TTY that is in letters mod e to
    numb ers/fig ures mod e.
    — Typ e any letter to shift a TTY that is in numb ers/fig ures mod e to
    letters mod e.
nBroad c ast Announc ement: A hearing -impaired user who uses only a TTY
for c ommunic ations with the DEFINITY AUDIX system will not see anything
on the TTY for a voic ed b road c ast message. The system ad ministrator
may want to send a TDD messag e to TTY users informing them of the
    following :
    — They will rec eive a voic ed b road c ast announc ement and they
    should d elete this message
    — The c ontents of the b road c ast message

    295 Requirements
nLog in Announc ement: A hearing-imp aired user who uses only TTY for
c ommunic ations with the DEFINITY AUDIX system will not see anything on
the TTY for a voic ed log in announc ement. If there are TTY users on the
DEFINITY AUDIX system, it may b e a g ood id ea not to use the Log in
Announc ement feature. If a log in announc ement is going to b e used , the
system ad ministrator may want to send a TDD messag e to TTY users
informing them of the following :
    — They will rec eive a voic ed log in announc ement when they log in,
and they will have to wait several sec ond s for a TDD promp t b efore
c ontinuing with their DEFINITY AUDIX session
    — The c ontents of the log in announc ement
    Requirements
The following are req uirements for using the TDD feature:
nThe p urc hasab le TDD announc ement set must b e installed . If the TDD
announc ement set is used on the same DEFINITY AUDIX system as voic e
announc ement sets, the Multiling ual feature must b e turned on for the
    system.
nTo rec ord TDD g reeting s and c ustom announc ements, the system
ad ministrator need s a TTY; a TTY with a b uffer is rec ommend ed sinc e the
system ad ministrator may want to ed it the g reeting b efore d ownload ing it
to the DEFINITY AUDIX system. (See the user’s g uide that c omes with the
TTY for instruc tions on using the TTY.)
nEac h sub sc rib er or c aller who wishes to c ommunic ate with the DEFINITY
AUDIX system need s a stand ard stand -alone, ac oustic ally-c oup led TTY
and a touc h-tone telephone. Devic es that b ypass the touc h-tone keyp ad ,
suc h as c omp uters with nond ialing TTY mod ems, are unab le to issue
c ommand s to the DEFINITY AUDIX system.
nThe TDD announc ement set need s to b e id entified on the Class of Servic e
sc reen or the Sub sc rib er sc reen for eac h TTY user.
    Feature Operation
Assig n the TDD announc ement set to sub sc rib ers either on the Class of Servic e
sc reen or on the Sub sc rib er sc reen. The TDD announc ement set c an b e the
Log in Announc ement Set, the Call Answer Primary Announc ement Set, or the
Call Answer Sec ond ary Announc ement Set.
Callers who reac h the mailb ox of a sub sc rib er with only the TDD announc ement
set ac tive must use a TTY to interac t with the DEFINITY AUDIX system. DEFINITY
AUDIX feature operation is the same for TTY callers as for speaking c allers with
minor d ifferenc es as noted in this feature d esc rip tion.

The DEFINITY AUDIX system hunt g roup extension answers in the system
announc ement set, not the TDD announc ement set. There are three methods TTY
users c an use for log g ing in to the DEFINITY AUDIX system:
nWait b efore entering log in seq uenc e.
    1. Dial the DEFINITY AUDIX hunt g roup extension numb er.
    2. Wait ab out five sec ond s (long enoug h for the DEFINITY AUDIX
system to answer), then d ial your log in ID and p assword.
    3. After you log in, the DEFINITY AUDIX system should switc h to the
TDD announc ement set if TDD is your Log in Announc ement Set. If
there is no response, wait a few more seconds and dial the login ID
    and p assword ag ain.
    4. If there is still no resp onse, hang up and try ag ain. If there is still no
resp onse, notify the DEFINITY AUDIX system ad ministrator.
nWatc h the LEDs on the TTY.
    1. Dial the DEFINITY AUDIX hunt g roup extension numb er.
    2. When you see what is ob viously a voice p attern on the TTY LED
(Lig ht Emitting Diod e) sig nal streng th ind ic ator, dial your log in ID
and p assword . (This LED p attern is c loser to stead y on as
op p osed to the ring ing p attern whic h is intermittent on/off
c orresp ond ing to the ring b ac k p attern the TTY is rec eiving from the
    hand set.)
    3. The DEFINITY AUDIX system should switc h to the TDD
announc ement set if TDD is your Log in Announc ement Set.
nDial your extension. If the DEFINITY AUDIX system is ad ministered in CL
Mod e, TTY users c an use to log in from a c all answer c all to their
extension if their Log in Announc ement Set and their Call Answer Primary
    Announc ement Set are TDD.
    1. Dial your personal extension numb er.
    2. The DEFINITY AUDIX system answers with your mailb ox’s TDD c all
    answer g reeting .
    3. As soon as you see your g reeting b eg in to d isp lay on your TTY, you
may d ial and then log in to the DEFINITY AUDIX system. (Dial
      , then d ial your extension and , followed b y your p assword
    and .)
    4. If your Log in Announc ement Set is TDD, the log in seq uenc e
d isp lays in TTY. Complete the login.

    TDD
    297 Feature Operation
    Multilingual Feature
There are several c onsid erations when dec id ing how to ad minister the
Multiling ual feature and c all c overag e for the hearing -imp aired TTY user. For
    examp le:
nDo you exp ec t the hearing -imp aired p erson to rec eive voic e c alls?
nDoes the p erson have suffic ient hearing ab ility to listen to voic e
    messag es?
nIs your c omp any able to p rovide c all c overag e to a TTY translator servic e
for hearing-imp aired users who c annot listen to voic e messag es?
Sub sc rib ers who p rimarily use the TDD announc ement set should rec ord their
name using the TTY. If a sub sc rib er need s to rec eive b oth TTY and voic e c alls, it
is rec ommended , b ut not nec essary, that two sep arate telep hone numb ers b e
assig ned to the sub sc rib er — one for TTY c alls and one for non-TTY c alls.
It may b e more p rac tic al to set the Multilingual feature Call Answer Lang uage
Choice field to n (no) on the Subscriber or Class of Service sc reen unless both
the p rimary and sec ond ary announc ement sets are TTY-b ased (suc h as U.S.
Eng lish TTY and another TTY-b ased lang uag e whic h may be availab le in the
    future).
In the example below, Mary Jones has no hearing and does not speak; and her
c omp any has an in-house TTY translation servic e to hand le inc oming voic e c alls.
The Call Answer Lang uag e Choic e field is set to n (no) for Mary, and she has one
p ersonal g reeting whic h inc lud es b oth voic e and TTY.
The system ad ministrator, or another sp eaking p erson, rec ord s the first p art of
Mary’s p ersonal g reeting whic h is very short. If the TDD announc ement set is the
Log in Announc ement Set for Mary Jones, the g reeting p romp ts are in TDD; in
whic h c ase, the sp eaker removes the hand set from the TTY ac oustic c oup ler
when the GA p romp t d isp lays on the TTY, voic es the g reeting , and then returns
the hand set to the ac oustic c oup ler either to rec ord the TDD p art of the g reeting
or to wait for more promp ts.
The following c ould b e the voic e part of a g reeting rec orded for Mary Jones:
“ This mailb ox b elong s to a hearing -imp aired user, Mary Jones. To leave a voic e
    messag e, press zero now.”
Pressing zero would send the c aller to the extension of a hearing p erson who c an
transc rib e voic e messag es to TTY messag es and send them to the mailb ox of
Mary Jones. The transc rib er need s to b e ad ministered as a c overing extension
on the Sub sc rib er sc reen for this arrang ement. The sec ond p art of Mary’s
p ersonal g reeting is in TDD, rec ord ed b y Mary or the p erson who rec ord ed the
voic e p art of the g reeting . The TDD p art of the g reeting need s to b e rec ord ed
d uring the same rec ord ing session as the voic e p art. (In other word s, Mary’s
g reeting c ontains both a voic e p art and a TDD part. The voic e p art is first and

The ab ove examp le illustrates one p ossib le sc enario for ad ministering the TTY

This sec tion id entifies the interac tions of the TDD feature with switc h features and
    other DEFINITY AUDIX features.
    Interactions with Switch Features
The TDD feature has no d irec t interac tions with any switc h features.
    Interactions with Other DEFINITY AUDIX
    Features
The TDD feature interac ts with other DEFINITY AUDIX features as follows:
nAnnounc ement Sets: TDD is one of the p urc hasab le announc ement sets
availab le with the DEFINITY AUDIX system.
nBroad c ast Messag e: A hearing -imp aired user who uses only a TTY for
c ommunic ations with the DEFINITY AUDIX system will not see anything on
the TTY for a voic ed b road c ast messag e. The system ad ministrator may
want to send a TDD messag e to TTY users informing them of the following :
    — They will rec eive a voic ed b road c ast messag e and they should
    d elete this messag e
    — The c ontents of the b road c ast message
    nDial-Through: Dialing ahead or d ialing throug h a p romp t may c ause the
    TTY to b e p lac ed in the wrong mod e. Althoug h this p roblem c an b e
annoying , resetting the rec eiving TTY to the c orrec t mod e is a fairly
straig htforward p roc ess. On TTYs that have sp ec ific mod e-reset keys,
p ress the ap p rop riate key. Do the following on TTYs that d o not have
    mod e-reset keys:
