    Message Delivery
    181 Feature Operation
For examp le, the p roc ed ure to send Messag e Delivery messag es from the loc al
mac hine to a remote rec ip ient would b e:
    1. A loc al subsc riber either c reates a Voic e Mail messag e, forward s a Call
Answer or Voic e Mail messag e, or retrieves a messag e saved in the
outgoing mailb ox. Note that Messag e Delivery messag es d esig nated
private will not be delivered. Message Delivery messages designated
p riority will b e delivered , b ut they will app ear as reg ular messag es to the
    remote system.
2.When p romp ted for the rec ip ient’s extension, the sub sc rib er enters one of
    the following :
nIf the rec ip ient’s numb er is in a range of ad ministered numb ers b ut
they are not ind ivid ually ad ministered , enter the full telep hone
numb er of the rec ip ient (area c od e or c ountry c od e p lus area c od e
may b e nec essary), followed b y the key.
nIf the rec ip ient is individ ually ad ministered , you need only enter p art
of the rec ip ient’s telep hone numb er, followed b y the key. The
numb er of d ig its subsc ribers must enter is d efined b y the extension
leng th on the Mac hine sc reen.
    3. The DEFINITY AUDIX system p lac es the messag e in the Outc alling q ueue
for d elivery. The system will attemp t to d eliver the messag e d uring one of
the intervals sp ec ified on the Mac hine sc reen. The times sp ec ified on this
    sc reen
must b e a sub set of the outc alling times ad ministered on the
System-Parameters Outc alling sc reen. If the outc alling p orts are all b usy,
the system retries in one minute. If an outc alling p ort is availab le, b ut for
some reason the system c annot deliver the messag e, the system will use
the resc hed uling inc rements sp ec ified on the System-Parameters
    Features sc reen.
    4. The DEFINITY AUDIX system will make six attemp ts to d eliver the
messag e at intervals sp ec ified on the System-Parameters Features
sc reen. If the messag e is delivered suc c essfully, the system will up d ate
    the outgoing message status to
ac cessed. If all six attemp ts fail, the
system will send a message to the sub sc rib er notifying him/her that the
Messag e Delivery was und eliverab le.
    Address Prefixes
Ad d resses for Messag e Delivery messag e rec ip ients c onsist of an op tional
loc ation prefix and a remote rec ip ient’s full telep hone numb er or a p ortion of
his/her telep hone numb er (d ep end ing on how they are ad ministered on the loc al
    system).
The p refix, if d efined , is a set of d ig its that id entifies a rec ip ient’s telep hone
numb er as a Messag e Delivery number. The ad d ress rang e p refix may c ontain,
for examp le, an area c od e or a c ountry c od e plus area c od e. Prefixes are usually
numeric and mimic the digits a subscriber would normally have to dial to address
a Message Delivery message. The prefix consists of 0 to 21 alphanumeric

c harac ters. Ad d ed to the extension, up to 31 c harac ters c an b e assig ned to an
    ad d ress rang e.
In some cases, a p refix may be
req uired if rec ip ients’ telep hone numb ers c onflic t
with the loc al numb ering p lan of the host switc h.
In imp lementing the Messag e Delivery feature, a number of p refix op tions c ould
b e used to help sub sc rib ers d isting uish b etween Messag e Delivery rec ip ients.
For example, a prefix could be:
nThe same numb ers as the c ountry c od e and area c od e.
nThe same numb ers as the area c od e (NPA) and offic e c od e.
nThe offic e c od e (NNX or NXX) if the rec ip ient shares the same area c od e
    as the loc al system.
nAn RNX c od e if the rec ipient is in a private network.
nAn alphanumeric c od e used as a mnemonic of a loc ation or p erson.
nAll of the ab ove op tions c ould b e ad ministered to b e map p ed into a sing le
rang e of Messag e Delivery ad d resses.
The Ad d ress-Rang es sc reen c an list all ad d ress rang es that have b een
ad ministered . Rememb er, Messag e Delivery ad dress rang es

    Delivery messages to be delivered
must have been ad ministered as
outc alling p eriod s on the System-Parameters Outc alling sc reen or
Messag e Delivery messag es will not b e transmitted .
nPersonal Direc tory: An alias may b e c reated and assig ned to any
Message Delivery recipient just as it would be for a local subscriber.
However, if the Messag e Delivery rec ip ient is nonad ministered , the alias
must initially b e assig ned using the extension numb er mod e.
    nPri o r it y M e ss a g e: Priority messages will be delivered to remote telephone
numb ers, b ut they will not b e rec og nized as p riority messag es when
    p layed out.
nPrivate Messag e: You will not b e ab le to send p rivate messag es via the
Messag e Delivery feature. Sub scrib ers who d esig nate Messag e Delivery
messag es as p rivate will b e notified b y the system that their messag e was
    undeliverable.
nSe c u ri t y Pa s sw o rd: There is no sec urity p assword for Messag e Delivery
    rec ip ients.
    NOTE:

    DescriptionPoints to Remember
    Administration Screens
The Message Send ing Restric tions feature restric ts the mes-
sag e routing of various communities of sub scribers. Since it
reg ulates voic e mail only, sub sc rib ers c an b yp ass the restric -
tions b y using the Call Answer feature.
The system administrator sets up a
    restric tion matrix whic h
ind ic ates whic h c ommunities of users c an send messag es to
eac h other. Eac h sub sc rib er may b e assig ned to only one
c ommunity. A d efault c ommunity is d efined so that it is not
nec essary to ad minister eac h sub sc rib er sp ec ific ally.
If a sub sc rib er in a restric ted c ommunity tries to send a mes-
sag e to an unauthorized d estination, the DEFINITY AUDIX
system p lays a messag e exp laining the restric tion. If there
are unauthorized d estinations on a restric ted sender’s mail-
ing list, the system informs the send er that sp ec ific mes-
sag es are nond eliverab le b ec ause of the restric tion. When
messages are sc hed uled for future d elivery, the restric tion is
c hec ked and the send er notified of restric tions when the
messages are being ad d ressed
and at the time of d elivery,
to allow for c hang es in the restric tion status.
    Wh o h a s i t: Sub sc rib ers may or may not b e
restric ted ac c ord ing to how the
    feature is ad ministered.
    Wh o c o n t r o l s i t: The system ad ministrator c ontrols
    the restric tions using the
    System-Parameters
Send ing -Restric tions sc reen.
    Wh o c a n a c c e s s it: Only restric ted sub sc rib ers are
mad e aware of the feature when
they are informed by the system
that they c annot add ress a
messag e to a sp ec ific sub scrib er.
    nUp to 15 c ommunities c an b e
d efined for send ing restric tions.
nAll restric tions p ertain to the send -
ing of voic e mail. Sub sc rib ers are
not restric ted from c alling or leav-
ing Call Answer messag es for oth-
    ers.
nAfter rec eiving a message from a
user in an unrestric ted c ommunity,
restric ted sub sc rib ers are not
g iven the menu op tion of rep lying
to the sender via voic e mail. They

    send er’s c all, however.
nGuests using a g uest password
    c annot b e restric ted .
nRestric tions c an b e set up so that

    186 Applications
    Applications
Often, up p er manag ement wants to insulate itself from messag es sent b y those
b elow a c ertain level of the c orp orate hierarc hy. This feature c an b e used to forc e
a more effic ient lateral routing of messag es, or ap p lied c reatively to set up
sp ec ific lines of c ommunic ation.
Further, the Messag e Sending Restric tions feature allows the ad ministrator to
resp ond to ab use of the system, restric ting those who are send ing messag es
unnec essarily. For examp le, universities c ould restric t stud ents from send ing
messag es to p rofessors and ad ministrators. Or, in the transp ortation and
manufac turing ind ustries, restric tions c ould be d efined so that d rivers and
p rod uc tion-line workers c an send messag es only to their sup ervisors — and not
    to eac h another.
This feature c an also b e used to restric t some sub sc rib ers from send ing AMIS
Analog or Messag e Delivery messag es to remote sites.
    Requirements
There are no req uirements for the Message Send ing Restric tions feature other
than those of the DEFINITY AUDIX system itself.
    Feature Operation
After c ommunities are d efined on Subsc rib er sc reens, send ing restric tions are
then imp lemented b y the ad ministrator using the System-Parameters
Send ing -Restric tions sc reen. (shown on the following p ag e). At eac h intersec tion
in the matrix, an “ r” ind ic ates a restric tion b etween the assoc iated c ommunities.
Any letter c an b e used to assig n the restric tion.

    Features
The Messag e Send ing Restric tions feature interac ts with other DEFINITY AUDIX
    features as follows:
nAMIS Analog Networking: The ad ministrator c an ad minister whic h
sub sc rib ers c an send AMIS analog messag es and to whic h remote
systems these sub sc rib ers c an send messag es.
nAutomated Attend ant: Automated Attend ant is a Call Answer feature, and
therefore not affec ted b y send ing restric tions.
nBroad c ast Messag e: Broad c ast Messag es are not sub jec t to send ing
restric tions. They are sent to all sub sc rib ers.
nCall Answer: Call Answer is not affec ted b y send ing restric tions and c an
b e used to b ypass restric tions if nec essary.
nDelivery Sched uling: When messag es are sc hed uled for future d elivery,
the restric tion is c hec ked and the send er notified of restric tions when the
    messages are being addressed
and at the time of d elivery, to allow for
chang es in the restric tion status.
nGuest Password: Sub sc rib ers who rec eive messag es via the g uest
    password cannot be restricted.
nLog in Announc ement: Log in Announc ements c annot b e restric ted .
nMailing List: The DEFINITY AUDIX system c hec ks for send ing restric tions
while the subsc rib er is c reating a mailing list. A messag e is p layed
informing the sub sc riber of restric ted d estinations, and those d estinations
are not ad d ed to the list. On a networked system, if the remote d estination
is not d efined as p art of a remote c ommunity on the Sub sc rib er sc reen,
the system uses the d efault c ommunity ID for the remote mac hine in
d ec id ing whether the d estination is restric ted .
nMessag e Delivery: The ad ministrator c an ad minister whic h sub sc rib ers
c an send Messag e Delivery messages and to whic h numbers these
sub sc rib ers c an send messag es.
nPersonal Direc tory: The system d oes not c hec k for send ing restric tions
while the subsc rib er is c reating a p ersonal d irec tory. This means that,
thoug h sub sc rib er A may be restric ted from send ing voic e mail to
sub sc rib er B, A c an still keep an alias for B in a p ersonal direc tory. This is
useful as a sp eed -dial func tion for c all transfers, for examp le.
