    backup
    A dup lic ate cop y of files and  d irectories saved  on a removab le med ia such as flop py diskette or 
    tap e.  The b ac kup  filesystem may be cop ied  b ac k (restored ) if the active version is d amag ed  
    (corrupted ) or lost.
    basic input/output system (BIOS)
    A system that c ontains the b uffers for sending information from a program to the ac tual hard ware 
    d evic e the information should  g o to.
    baud
    A unit of measurement that d esc ribes the speed of transferred information.
    baud rate
    Transmission sig naling  sp eed .
    basic call transfer
    A switc h hook-flash method  used to send  the I
    NTUITY AUDIX transfer command  over analog  voic e 
    ports.
    basic rate access
    See

    basic rate interface (BRI)
    International standard p rotocol for connec ting a station terminal to an integ rated systems dig ital 
    network (ISDN) switch.  ISDN BRI sup p orts two 64 Kb p s information b earer c hannels (B1 and  B2), 
    and  one 16 Kb p s c all status and c ontrol (D) c hannel (a 2B +  D format).  Also c alled  b

    binary digit (bit)
    Two-numb er notation that uses the dig its 0 and  1.  Low-ord er bits are on the rig ht (for examp le, 
    0001= 1, 0010= 2, and so forth).  Four b its make a nyb b le; eig ht b its make a b yte.
    binary synchronous communications (BSC)
    A charac ter-oriented  sync hronous link p rotoc ol.
    BIOS
    See

    bit
    See  
    binary digit.
    body
    The part of sub sc riber voice mail that contains the ac tual spoken messag e.  For a leave word  
    calling (LWC) message, it is a stand ard  system announc ement.
    boot 
    The op eration to start a c omp uter system by loading p rog rams from d isk to main memory (part of 
    system initialization).  Booting is typ ically ac complished  b y p hysically turning  on or restarting  the 
    system.  Also c alled  
    reb oot.
    boot filesystem
    The filesystem from whic h the system load s its initial p rog rams.
    bps (bits per second)
    The numb er of binary units of information (1s or 0s) that can b e transmitted  p er sec ond .  Mb ps 
    refers to a million b its p er sec ond ; Kb p s refers to a thousand  b its p er second.
    BRI

    broadcast messaging
    An I
    NTUITY AUDIX feature that enab les the system ad ministrator and other desig nated users to 
    send  a messag e to all sub sc rib ers automatic ally.
    BSC

    buffer
    Memory used  to c ompensate for time differences in transmission by temporarily storing  data.
    bulletin board
    An I
    NTUITY AUDIX feature that allows a messag e to be p layed  to c allers who dial the extension. 
    Callers c annot leave a messag e sinc e it is a listen-only servic e.  Also c alled  
    information service.
    bundling
    Comb ining  several c alls and  handling  them as a sing le c all.  See also 
    automatic  messag e sc an.
    bus
    An elec tric al c onnec tion/c able allowing  two or more wires, lines, or p erip herals to be connec ted  
    tog ether.
    busy-out/release
    To remove a Lucent I
    NTUITY d evice from service (make it app ear b usy or in use), and  later restore 
    it to servic e (release it).  The Luc ent I
    NTUITY switc h d ata link, voic e p orts, or networking  p orts may 
    b e b usied  out if they ap pear faulty or if maintenance tests are run.

    A unit of storag e in the c omp uter.  On many systems, a byte is eig ht b its (binary d ig its), the 
    eq uivalent of one c haracter of text.

    call-answer
    An I
    NTUITY AUDIX feature that allows the system to answer a c all and  rec ord  a messag e when the 
    sub sc rib er is unavailab le.  Callers may b e red irec ted  to the system throug h the c all coverag e or 
    call forward ing  switc h features.  Subsc rib ers may rec ord  a p ersonal g reeting  for these c allers.
    call-answer language choice
    The cap ab ility of sub scrib er mailb oxes to ac cep t messag es in either of two d ifferent lang uag es.  
    This c ap ability exists when the multiling ual feature is turned  on.
    callback number
    In AMIS analog networking , the telep hone numb er transmitted  to the recip ient machine to be used  
    in returning  voic e mail messag es that c annot b e d elivered .
    call coverage
    A switch feature that d efines a p reselec ted  p ath for c alls to follow if the first (or sec ond ) coverag e 
    p oints are not answered .  The Luc ent I
    NTUITY system may b e placed  at the end of a coverage p ath 
    to hand le red irected  c alls through call c overag e, send  all c alls, g o to c over, etc.
    call delivery

    call-distribution group
    The set of analog p ort cards on the switch that c onnects sub scrib ers and  users to the Lucent 
    I
    NTUITY system b y d istrib uting  new c alls to id le p orts.  This group  (or sp lit) is c alled  automatic call 
    d istrib ution (ACD) on System 85, Generic  2, and  Generic  3 and uniform c all d istribution (UCD) on 
    System 75, Generic 1, and  Generic  3.  See also

    .
    called tone (CED tone)
    The distinc tive tone g enerated  b y a fax end point when it answers a c all (c onstant 2100 Hz tone). 
    called subscriber information (CSI)
    The id entifier for the answering  fax end point.  This id entifier is sent in the T.30 protoc ol and  is 
    g enerally the telep hone numb er of the fax end p oint.
    calling tone (CNG tone)
    The d istinctive tone g enerated  b y a fax endp oint when p lac ing  a c all (constant 1100 Hz tone on for 
    one-half sec ond , off for three sec ond s). 
    call vectoring
    A System 85 R2V4, Generic  2, and  Generic 3 feature that uses a vector (switch p rog ram), allowing  
    a switc h ad ministrator to c ustomize the b ehavior of c alls sent to an automatic c all distrib ution 
    (ACD) group .
    card cage
    An area within the Lucent I
    NTUITY hard ware p latform that c ontains and  sec ures all of the standard 
    and  op tional c ircuit c ard s used  in the system.

    A hig h-c ap acity d ata storag e/retrieval d evic e that can be used to transfer larg e amounts of 
    information onto hig h-density mag netic  cartrid ge tap e b ased  on a p red etermined format.  This 
    tap e is to be removed  from the system and  stored  as a b ac kup .
    CED tone
    See  
    called  tone.
    central office (CO)
    An office or location in which larg e telec ommunic ation mac hines such as telep hone switc hes and  
    network ac c ess facilities are maintained .  In a CO, p rivate customer lines are terminated and  
    connec ted  to the p ub lic  network throug h c ommon carriers.
    central processing unit (CPU)
    The comp onent of the c omp uter that manip ulates d ata and  processes instruc tions coming from 
    software.
    channel capacity
    A measure of the maximum b it rate throug h a c hannel.
    class of service (COS)
    The stand ard  set of I
    NTUITY AUDIX features g iven to sub sc rib ers when they are first ad ministered  
    (set up  with a voice mailb ox).
    clear to send (CTS)
    Loc ated  on Pin 5 of the 25-c ond uctor RS-232 interfac e, CTS is used  in the transfer of d ata 
    b etween the comp uter and  a serial d evice.
    client
    A c omp uter that send s, rec eives and  uses d ata, b ut that also shares a larg er resourc e whose 
    func tion is to d o most data storag e and  p roc essing .  For Luc ent I
    NTUITY Messag e Manag er, the 
    sub sc rib er’s PC running  Messag e Manag er is the c lient.  See also

    CNG tone

    collocated
    A Luc ent I
    NTUITY system installed in the same p hysic al loc ation as the host switc h.  See also loc al

    collocated adjunct
    Two or more ad juncts that are serving  the same switc h (i.e., eac h has voice p ort c onnections to the 
    switch) or that are serving  d ifferent switches b ut c an b e networked  throug h a direc t RS-232 
    connec tion d ue to their p roximity.
    comcode
    Luc ent’s numb ering  system for telecommunications eq uipment.  Each comc ode is a nine dig it 
    numb er that represents a sp ecific  p iec e of hard ware, software, or d ocumentation.
    command
    An instruc tion or req uest g iven b y the user to the software to perform a p artic ular func tion.  An 
    entire command  c onsists of the c ommand name and op tions.  Also, one- or two-key touch tones 
    that control a voic e mailbox activity or function.

    A messag e that c omb ines both a voice messag e and  a fax messag e into one unit, whic h is then

    configuration
    The p artic ular c omb ination of hard ware and  software comp onents selected for a system, inc lud ing  
    external c onnections, internal op tions, and  p erip heral equipment.
    controller circuit card
    A circ uit c ard  used  on a c omp uter system that c ontrols its b asic  func tionality and makes the 
    system op erational.  These cards are used  to c ontrol mag netic  p erip herals, vid eo monitors, and  
    b asic  system communications.
    COS

    coverage path
    The sequenc e of  alternate d estinations to whic h a c all is automatic ally sent when the c all is not 
    answered  b y a sub sc rib er.  This sequenc e is set up  on the switch, normally with I
    NTUITY AUDIX as 
    the last or only destination.
    CPU

    cross connect
    Distrib ution system eq uip ment used  to terminate and  administer c ommunic ation c irc uits.
    cross connection
    The connection of one wire to another, usually by anc horing  eac h wire to a connecting  b loc k and  
    then p lac ing  a third  wire b etween them so that an elec tric al c onnec tion is made.

    D
    database
    A struc tured set of files, rec ord s, or tab les.  Also, a collec tion of filesystems and  files in disk 
    memory that store the voice and  nonvoic e (p rog ram d ata) nec essary for Lucent I

    op eration.
    data communications equipment (DCE)
    Standard typ e of d ata interfac e normally used  to c onnec t to d ata terminal equipment (DTE) 
    d evic es.  DCE d evices inc lud e the data servic e unit (DSU), the isolating  d ata interfac e (IDI), and  
    the modular processor data module (MPDM).
    data communications interface unit (DCIU)
    A switch d evic e that allows nonvoic e (d ata) c ommunic ation b etween a Lucent I
    NTUITY system and  
    a Lucent switc h.  The DCIU is a hig h-sp eed  sync hronous d ata link that c ommunic ates with the 
    common c ontrol switc h p roc essor over a d irect memory ac cess (DMA) c hannel that read s d ata

    A term used  to d esc rib e the c ommunic ations link used for d ata transmission from a sourc e to a 
    d estination.  For example, a p hone line for data transmission.
    data service unit (DSU)
    A d evice used  to ac cess d ig ital d ata c hannels.  DATAPHONE II 2500 DSUs are sync hronous data 
    communications equipment (DCE) d evic es used  for extend ed-local Lucent I
    NTUITY system 
    connec tions.  The 2600 or 2700 series may also b e used ; these are more expensive DSU op tions 
    and  supp ort d iag nostic testing  and  the DATAPHONE II Servic e network system.
    data set
    Luc ent term for a mod em.  A d ata set usually inc lud es the telep hone.  See also 
    mod em.
    data terminal equipment (DTE)
    Standard typ e of d ata interfac e normally used  for the end p oints in a c onnec tion.  Normally the 
    Luc ent I
    NTUITY system, most terminals, and  the switc h d ata link are DTE d evices.
    data terminal ready (DTR)
    A control sig nal sent from the d ata terminal eq uip ment (DTE) to the d ata c ommunic ations 
    eq uip ment (DCE) that ind ic ates the DTE is on and  read y to c ommunic ate.

    default
    A value that is automatic ally sup p lied b y the system if no other value is sp ecified .
    default print number
    The subscrib er-ad ministered  extension to which autoprinted  faxes are red irec ted  up on their 
    rec eip t into the sub sc rib er’s mailb ox.  This d efault p rint d estination is also p rovid ed  as a p rint 
    op tion when the subscrib er is manually retrieving and  p rinting  faxes from the mailb ox.
    delivered message
    A voic e mail messag e that has been suc cessfully transmitted  to a rec ipients inc oming  mailb ox.
    demand testing
    Testing  p erformed  on req uest (usually b y servic e personnel).
    diagnostic testing
    A program run for testing  and  d etermining  faults in the system.

    digital communications protocol (DCP)

    A method of transferring voic e mail messag es b etween voic e messag ing  systems in a dig ital

    distributed communications system (DCS)
    A network of two or more switc hes that uses log ic al and  physical d ata links to p rovid e full or partial

    escape from reply
    The ab ility to q uic kly return to g etting messag es for a sub sc riber who g ets stuc k trying  to resp ond  
    to a messag e.  To escap e, the sub sc riber simp ly p resses #.
    escape to attendant
    An I
    NTUITY AUDIX feature that allows a subsc rib er with the c all answer feature to have a p ersonal

    A hig h-c ap acity d ata storag e/retrieval d evic e that is loc ated inside a c omp uter platform.  A hard  
    d isk drive stores d ata on non-removab le hig h-d ensity mag netic med ia b ased  on a p red etermined  
    format for retrieval b y the system at a later d ate.
    hardware
    The physic al c omp onents of a c omputer system.  The central processing  unit, d isks, tap e and  
    flop py drives are all hardware.
    header
    Information that the system c reates to id entify a messag e.  A messag e head er inc lud es the 
    orig inator or recip ient, typ e of messag e, c reation time, and  d elivery time.
    help
    A command  run by pressing   or     on a Lucent I
    NTUITY d isp lay terminal to show 
    the op tions available at your c urrent screen position.  In the I
    NTUITY AUDIX system, p ress     
    on the telephone keyp ad to get a list of op tions.  See also

    hertz (Hz)
    A measurement of freq uenc y in c yc les p er sec ond .  A hertz is one cycle per second.
    host switch
