However, the switc h c annot d isting uish among several app lic ations resid ing on the same ad junc t and treats the adjunc t, and all resid ent app lic ations, as a single ap p lic ation. The terms app lic ation and ad junc t are used interc hangeably throug hout this document. applications processor A micro-c omp uter based , program c ontrolled comp uter p rovid ing ap p lic ation servic es for the DEFINITY switc h. The p rocessor is used with several user-c ontrolled app lic ations such as traffic analysis and elec tronic d ocumentation. application service element See capability group. architecture The org anizational structure of a system, includ ing hard ware and software. ARS See Automatic Route Selec tion (ARS). ASA Averag e sp eed of answer — a call c enter measurement of the averag e time a caller will wait for an ag ent. ASAI See Ad junc t-Switc h Ap p lic ation Interfac e (ASAI) ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) The stand ard c od e for rep resenting charac ters in d ig ital form. Eac h c harac ter is rep resented b y an 8-b it c ode (inc lud ing parity bit). association A communication c hannel between ad junc t and switc h for messag ing purp oses. An active assoc iation is one that ap p lies to an existing c all on the switch or to an extension on the c all. asynchronous data transmission A method of transmitting data in which eac h c haracter is p rec eded by a start b it and followed b y a stop b it, thus p ermitting data c harac ters to be transmitted at irreg ular intervals. This type transmission is ad vantag eous when transmission is not reg ular (charac ters typ ed at a keyb oard ). Also c alled async hronous transmission. See also sync hronous d ata transmission. asynchronous data unit (ADU) A devic e that allows d irec t connec tion b etween RS-232C eq uip ment and a d ig ital switc h. asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) A pac ket-like switching tec hnolog y in which data is transmitted in fixed -size (53-b yte) cells. See also attend ant c onsole. attendant console The workstation used b y an attend ant. The attend ant console allows the attend ant to orig inate a call, answer an incoming c all, transfer a c all to another extension or trunk, p ut a c all on hold , and remove a c all from hold . Attendants using the console c an also manag e and monitor some system op erations. Also called c onsole. See also attend ant. Attention dial (ATD) A command in the Hayes modem c ommand set for async hronous mod ems. Audio Information Exchange (AUDIX) A fully integ rated voic e-mail system. Can b e used with a variety of c ommunic ations systems to p rovid e c all-history d ata, suc h as sub sc rib er id entific ation and reason for red irec tion. AUDIX See Aud io Information Exc hang e (AUDIX). auto-in trunk group Trunk group for which the CO processes all of the d igits for an inc oming call. When a CO seizes a trunk from an auto-in trunk g roup , the switc h automatic ally c onnec ts the trunk to the d estination — typ ic ally an ACD sp lit where, if no agents are availab le, the call g oes into a q ueue in which c allers are answered in the ord er in which they arrive. Auto-In Work mode One of four ag ent work modes: the mod e in which an agent is read y to p roc ess another c all as soon as the current call is comp leted . Automatic Alternate Routing (AAR) A feature that routes calls to other than the first-c hoice route when fac ilities are unavailab le.*** Automatic Callback (ACB) A feature that enab les internal c allers, up on reaching a b usy extension, to have the system automatic ally connec t and ring b oth parties when the c alled p arty b ec omes available. Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) A feature that answers calls, and then, d ep end ing on ad ministered instruc tions, delivers messag es app rop riate for the caller and routes the c all to an agent when one b ec omes available. Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) split A method of routing c alls of a similar typ e among ag ents in a call c enter. Also, a group of extensions that are staffed b y ag ents trained to hand le a certain typ e of inc oming c all. Automatic calling unit (ACU) A devic e that p lac es a telephone call. Automatic Circuit Assurance (ACA) A feature that trac ks calls of unusual d uration to fac ilitate troub leshooting. A hig h numb er of very short c alls or a low numb er of very long calls may sig nify a faulty trunk. Automatic Number Identification (ANI) Rep resentation of the c alling number, for d isp lay or for further use to ac cess information ab out the caller. Availab le with Signaling System 7.

Restoration is d one within seconds of a service disrup tion so that c ritical d ata ap p lic ations c an remain op erational. Automatic Route Selection (ARS) A feature that allows the system to automatic ally c hoose the least-cost way to send a toll call. automatic trunk A trunk that does not req uire ad dressing information b ec ause the d estination is p red etermined. A req uest for servic e on the trunk, called a seizure, is sufficient to route the c all. The normal d estination of an automatic trunk is the c ommunic ations-system attend ant g roup . Also c alled automatic inc oming trunk and automatic tie trunk. AUX Auxiliary auxiliary equipment Equipment used for op tional system features, suc h as Loud speaker Pag ing and Music-on-Hold. auxiliary trunk A trunk used to c onnect auxiliary eq uip ment, suc h as rad io-p ag ing equip ment, to a communications system. Aux-Work mode A work mode in whic h ag ents are unavailable to rec eive ACD calls. Ag ents enter Aux-Work mod e when involved in non-ACD ac tivities suc h as taking a break, g oing to lunc h, or p lac ing an outg oing call. As used in North America, BRI p rovid es 23 64-kb ps B-channels (voic e or d ata) and one 64-kb p s D-channel (sig naling ). The D-c hannel is the 24th channel of the interface and contains multiplexed sig naling information for the other 23 c hannels. baud A unit of transmission rate eq ual to the numb er of sig nal events p er sec ond . See also b it rate and bits per second (bps). BCC See bearer capability class (BCC). BCMS Basic Call Manag ement System BCT See b usiness c ommunic ations terminal (BCT). bearer capability class (BCC) Cod e that id entifies the typ e of a c all (for examp le, voic e and d ifferent typ es of d ata). Determination of BCC is b ased on the c aller’s c harac teristic s for non-ISDN end p oints and on the Bearer Cap ab ility and Low-Layer Compatibility Information Elements of an ISDN end p oint. Current BCCs are 0 (voic e-g rade d ata and voic e), 1 (DMI mod e 1, 56 kbp s d ata transmission), 2 (DMI mod e 2, synchronous/asynchronous d ata transmission up to 19.2 kb ps) 3 (DMI mod e 3, 64 kb p s circuit/p acket d ata transmission), 4 (DMI mod e 0, 64 kb p s synchronous d ata), 5 (temp orary sig naling c onnection, and 6 (wideb and call, 128–1984 kb p s sync hronous d ata). BRI See Basic Rate Interfac e (BRI) Tbridged appearance A call app earance on a voic e terminal that matc hes a c all ap pearanc e on another voice terminal for the d uration of a c all. BTU British Thermal Unit buffer 1. In hard ware, a c irc uit or c omponent that isolates one electrical c irc uit from another. Typic ally, a b uffer hold s d ata from one c irc uit or process until another circ uit or p roc ess is read y to ac cep t the data. 2. In software, an area of memory that is used for temp orary storag e. bus A multiconduc tor electrical path used to transfer information over a c ommon c onnection from any of several sources to any of several d estinations. business communications terminal (BCT) A dig ital d ata terminal used for b usiness ap p lic ations. A BCT c an func tion via a d ata mod ule as a sp ecial-p urp ose terminal for services p rovid ed b y a processor or as a terminal for d ata entry and retrieval. BX.25 A version of the CCITT X.25 p rotoc ol for d ata c ommunications. BX.25 ad d s a fourth level to the stand ard X.25 interfac e. This up permost level c omb ines levels 4, 5, and 6 of the ISO reference mod el. bypass tie trunks A 1-way, outg oing tie trunk from a tand em switc h to a main switc h in an ETN. Byp ass tie trunks, p rovid ed in limited q uantities, are used as a last-c hoic e route when all trunks to another tand em switch are busy. Byp ass tie trunks are used only if all app lic able intertandem trunks are b usy. byte A sequenc e of (usually eig ht) b its p roc essed tog ether. C cabinet Housing for rac ks, shelves, or c arriers that hold elec tronic eq uip ment. cable Physical c onnection b etween two pieces of eq uip ment (for example, d ata terminal and mod em) or b etween a p iec e of eq uip ment and a termination field . cable connector A jac k (female) or p lug (male) on the end of a c ab le. For the attendant c onsole, six buttons, lab eled a–f, used to orig inate, rec eive, and hold c alls. Two lig hts next to the b utton show the status of the call app earance. 2. For the voice terminal, a button lab eled with an extension and used to p lac e outgoing calls, rec eive inc oming calls, or hold c alls. Two lig hts next to the b utton show the status of the call appearance. call-control capabilities Cap ab ilities ( Third Party Selec tive Hold , Third Party Reconnect, Third Party Merg e) that can b e used in either of the Third Party Call Control ASE (c luster) sub sets (Call Control and Domain Control). Call Management System (CMS) An ap plication, running on an ad junct p rocessor, that c ollec ts information from an ACD unit. CMS enables c ustomers to monitor and manag e telemarketing c enters b y g enerating rep orts on the status of ag ents, sp lits, trunks, trunk group s, vec tors, and VDNs, and enab les c ustomers to p artially administer the ACD feature for a communications system. call-reference value (CRV) An id entifier p resent in ISDN messag es that assoc iates a related seq uenc e of messag es. In ASAI, CRVs d isting uish b etween associations. call vector A set of up to 15 vec tor c ommands to b e p erformed for an incoming or internal c all. callback call A call that automatic ally returns to a voic e-terminal user who ac tivated the Automatic Callb ack or Ring b ac k Queuing feature. call-waiting ringback tone A low-p itc hed tone id entic al to ring b ack tone exc ept that the tone d ecreases in the last 0.2 second s (in the United States). Call-waiting ring b ac k tone notifies the attendant that the Attend ant Call Waiting feature is ac tivate and that the called p arty is aware of the waiting call. Tones in international c ountries may sound d ifferent. call work code A numb er, up to 16 d ig its, entered b y ACD agents to rec ord the oc c urrenc e of customer-defined events (suc h as ac count cod es, social sec urity numb ers, or phone numb ers) on ACD c alls. Call traffic for a fac ility is scanned every 100 second s. If the fac ility is b usy, it is assumed to have b een busy for the entire sc an interval. There are 3600 sec ond s p er hour. The Roman numeral for 100 is the c ap ital letter C. The ab b reviation for c all seconds is CS. Therefore, 100 call sec ond s is ab b reviated CCS. If a fac ility is b usy for an entire hour, then it is said to have been busy for 36 CCS. See also Er la n g. capability A req uest or indic ation of an operation. For example, Third Party Make Call is a req uest for setting up a c all; event rep ort is an indic ation that an event has occ urred . capability group Set of c ap ab ilities, determined by switch ad ministration, that c an b e requested b y an ap p lication. Capability groups denote association types. For example, Call Control is a typ e of assoc iation that allows certain func tions (the ones in the cap ab ility g roup) to be p erformed over this typ e of assoc iation. Also referred to as ad ministration group s or ap p lic ation servic e elements (ASEs). CA-TSC Call-Assoc iated Temp orary Sig naling Connection cause value A value is returned in resp onse to req uests or in event rep orts when a d enial or unexp ected condition oc c urs.
