HWTALLATION INTER-TELPRACTICES Issue 1, November 1994 IMX/GMX 416/832 INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE 13. PARKING THE HEADS ON MFM-TYPE HARD DISK DRIVES 13.1 Before powering down the system when using an MFM-type hard disk drive, always, “park the heads” on the hard disk drive using the following procedure. This moves the heads off of the hard disk and helps to prevent damage to the disk when the system is powered back up. NOTE: IDE-type (Quantum Pro-Drive 4&W) hard disk drives are equipped with “self-parking” heads. Do not attempt to park the heads on a hard disk drive that has self-parking heads. (1) (2) (3) Exit to DOS by performing these steps: a. While the Inter-Tel logo and initial option screen is displayed, press the SHIFT, CTRL (control), and X keys all a the same time. (The monitor displays “Are you sure you wish to exit Applications?“) b. EITEIER, pr- RETURN to exit the 416/832 Applications program. (The moni- tor displays the “C:\AP>” programming prompt.) NOTE: When the 416/832 Applications pro- gram is exited, a five minute timer begins. If the system is not powered down (or returned to the Applications program) before the timer expires, the system will perform a major re- set. OR, press TAR and then press RETURN to cancel the exit. At the C:\Ap> prompt: EITHER, enter “secure” and press RETURN to park the heads. (The monitor displays “OK to power down” or other similar message.) OR, enter “int416” or “gmx416” (or “int832” or ‘@x832”) and press RFXURN to return to the 416/832 Applications program without parking the heads. (Disregard the next step.) Turn OFF the AC POWER switch. When power is restored, the system download returns the hard disk drive to normal operation. 14. RECOMMENDED DATABASE SAVE PROCEDURE 14.1 As a precaution, the 416/832 System database should be saved (backed up) prior to any planned shut- down of the system. If a problem should occur, the data- base can then be restored. To save the database, follow these steps: (1) (2) (3) (4 Q Properly format a double sided/high density floppy disk as outlined on page 5-168 of the manual. Save the current system database as outlined on page 5-168 of the manual. Using a soft-tipped marking pen, label the floppy disk with the current date and time. Store the floppy disk in a dry, temperate environ- ment. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme heat or cold. For added security, repeat steps 1 through 4 and store the second floppy disk in a different loca- tion. 15. PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE 15.1 For optimal system performance, periodically conduct the following preventative maintenance rou- tines: Clean and Dust -To ensure proper air circulation and reduce excess heat, clean and dust the ventila- tion slots on the .equipment cabinet, the mesh screen on the power supply chassis, and the components on the computer and telecom circuit cards. Check Component Connections -Ensure that all components on the computer and telecom circuit cards are seated securely in their sockets and that no pins are bent. Check Card Connections - Ensure that all com- puter and telecom circuit cards are seated securely in their appropriate card slots. Check Cable Connections - Ensure that all sys- tem power and interface cables are properly con- nected. Check System Voltages - Ensure that all system power supply voltages are within tolerance, as out- lined on page 3-103. Page 3-154
INTER-TELPRACTICES IMX/GMX 416/832 INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE INSTALLATION Issue 1, November 1994 16. POST-INSTALLATION CHECKLIST 16.1 To ensure that the system has been installed prop erly, review the installation outline on page 3-3. Then review the items in the following list as a final check. - Equipment cabinet, MDF, and station locations, and cable runs meet environmental requirements and cable lengths are within loop limits. - Ferrite beads are installed on all station, trunk, and RS-232-C cables. - Bridging clips are installed where required on all MDF blocks. - Gas discharge tubes with silicon avalanche suppres- sors are installed on the trunks for lightning protec- tion. Also, if extra protection is desired, the cable between the telephone company RJ-type block(s) and the gas discharge tubes is at least 75 feet long. - If off-premises extensions are used, OPX or custom- er-provided circuits, and OPX repeaters (if needed), are connected at the h4DF. - The equipment cabinet is attached to an approved earth ground. - The system power supply is plugged into an isolated, dedicated AC outlet, and no other equipment has been plugged into the same outlet. An extension cord was not used. Avoltage surge/spike protector is installed to reduce the effects of AC voltage surges and spikes that can cause system malfunctions, false logic, and/or damage to the electronic components. - Power supply voltages are in tolerance. - Amphenol-type connectors, modular jack comtec- tors, and station instrument line cords are all con- nected securely. All keyset, DSS/BLF Unit, Attendant Computer Console, single-line, and play- back device stations are working properly. - All optional equipment is properly installed and working correctly (for example, printer has paper and ribbon, radio is tuned to a station, etc). - CO dial tone is present and calls can be placed and received using all trunks. (Refer to FEHURES and PROGRAMMING for configuring the system and for programming outgoing access, allowed answer, and ring in.) - After programming the system, the database is backed up onto floppy disks. (Refer to the PRO- GRAMMING section for details.) Page 3-155
