    Installation
    WARNING
    • Never \block the ventilation slots a\wnd louvers on the
machine\f These openings are provided for proper
ventilation of working parts inside the mach\wine\f
Blocking these openings\w can cause the mac\whine
to overheat\f Never place the machi\wne on a soft
    surface, such as a sofa o\wr rug\f
    • Do not install the \wmachine in the following
    locations:

    - A damp or dusty location

    - A location near wat\wer faucets or water

    - A location exposed\w to direct sunlight

    - A location su\bject to high temperatures

    - A location near op\wen flames
    • Do not install the \wmachine near alcoh\wol, paint
thinner, or other flamma\ble\w su\bstances\f If
flamma\ble su\bstances\w come into contact with
electrical parts inside the mach\wine, it may result in a
    fire or electrical shock\f
    • Do not place the following items on the machine\w\f If
these items come into contact with a high-voltage
area inside the mach\wine, it may result in a fire or
electrical shock\f If these items are dropped or
spilled inside the\w machine, immediately turn OFF
the main power switch, and disconnect the power

    Power Supply
    WARNING
    • Do not damage or mo\wdify the power cord\f Also,
do not place heavy o\bjects on the power cord, or
pull on or excessively \bend it, as thi\ws could cause
electrical damage and result in a fire or electrical
    shock\f
    •  Keep the power cord away from a heat source;
failure to do this may cause the power cord coating
to melt, resulting in a fire or electrical shock\f
    • Do not connect or disconnect the power cord with
wet hands, as this may result in electrical shock\f
    • Do not connect the power cord to a multiplug
power strip, as this may cause a fire or electrical
    shock\f
    • Do not \bundle up or \wtie the power cord in a knot, as
this may result in a fire or electrical shock\f
    • Insert the power plug completely into the power
outlet, as failure to do so may result in a fire or
    electrical shock\f
    • Do not use power cords other than the \wpower cord
provided, as this may result in a fire or electrical
    shock\f
    • As a general rule, do not use extension cords\f Using
an extension cord may result in a fire or electrical
    shock\f
    • Do not use power supplies with voltages other than\w
those specified her\wein, as this may result in a fire or
    electrical shock\f
    • Always grasp the power plug when discon\wnecting
the power cord\f Pulling on the power cord may

    it in an emergency\f
    \bandling
    WARNING
    • Do not attempt to disassem\ble or mo\wdify the
machine\f There are high-temperature and high-
voltage components \winside the machine\w which may
result in a fire or electrical shock\f
    • If the machine makes strange noises, or gives off
smoke, heat, or strange\w smells, immediately turn
OFF the main power switch, and disconnect the
power cord from the power outlet\f Then, contact
your local authorized Canon dealer\f Continued use
of the machine in \wthis condition may result in a fire
    or electrical shock\f
    • Do not use highly fla\wmma\ble sprays near the
machine\f If gas from these sprays comes into
contact with the electrical components in\wside the
machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock\f
    • To avoid damage to the power cord and creating a
fire hazard, always turn OFF the main power switch,
and unplug the int\werface ca\ble when moving the
machine\f Otherwise, the power cord or interface

may tip over or fall resulting in person\wal injury\f
    • Close the feeder/platen cover gently to avoid
catching your hands, as this may result in personal \w
    injury\f
    • Do not press down hard on the feeder/platen cover
when using the plat\wen glass to make copies of thick \w
\books\f Doing so may damage the platen glass and
    result in personal \winjury\f
    • Paper that has just\w \been output from the machine
may \be hot\f Be careful when removing or aligning
paper from the output tray\f Touching paper right
after it is output ma\wy result in low-temperature
    \burns\f
    • Do not place your hands, hair, clothing, etc\f, near
the exit and feed rollers\f Even if the machine \wis not
in operation, your hands, hair, or clothing may get

    Maintenance and Inspections
    WARNING
    • When cleaning the \wmachine, first turn OFF the main
power switch, then disconnec\wt the power cord\f
Failure to o\bserve these steps may result in a fire or
    electrical shock\f •
Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet
regularly, and clean the ar\wea around the \base of
the power plug's metal pi\wns and the power outlet
with a dry cloth to ensure that all dust an\wd grime is
removed\f If the power cord is connected for a long
period of time in a d\wamp, dusty, or smoky location,
dust can \build up a\wround the power plug and
\become damp\f This may cause a short circuit and
    result in a fire\f
    • Clean the machine \wusing a slightly da\wmpened cloth
with a mild detergent mixed with water\f Do not use
alcohol, \benzene, paint thinner, or other flamma\ble\w
su\bstances\f Check detergent for flamma\bility prior
to use\f If flamma\ble su\bstanc\wes come into contact
with a high-voltage area inside the mach\wine, it may
result in a fire or electrical shock\f
    • There are some areas inside the mac\whine which
are su\bject to high-voltages\f When removing
jammed paper or whe\wn inspecting the inside of\w the
machine, do not allow necklaces, \bracelets, or other
metal o\bjects to touch the inside of\w the machine, as
this may result in \burns or electrical shock\f
    • Do not \burn or throw used toner cartridges into
open flames, as this may cause the toner remaining
inside the cartridges to ignite, resulting in \burns or
    a fire\f
    • Make sure that the power plug is firmly inserted
into the power outlet after cleaning the ma\wchine\f
Do not use the mach\wine while the conne\wction is
loose, as doing so may cause a fire\f
    • Check the power cord and power plug regularly\f If
the following conditions occ\wur, contact your local
authorized Canon dealer, as the condition\w may
    cause a fire:

    - There are \burn marks on the power plug\f

    - The \blade on the power plug is deformed or
    \broken\f

    - The power goes OFF and ON\w when the power
    cord is \bent\f

    - There are cuts, cracks, or indentations \won the
    power cord\f

    - A part of the power cord \becomes hot\f
    • Check the power cord and power plug regularly
