    Automation and MIDI controllers
The following sections provide information on automation options
when using HALion SE within Cubase SE and on MIDI controllers.
    Recording dynamic control settings
Proceed as follows to record dynamic control settings within the
HALion SE window onto a Cubase SE track:
1.Open the MIDI-Filter Preferences in Cubase SE and switch off the
    “Sysex” Filter.
In Cubase SE, this Filter is activated by default. By deactivating it, you enable Cubase
    SE to record SysEx data.
If in doubt, refer to the chapter about System Exclusive Handling in the
Getting into the Details document. It contains information on recording
    and editing SysEx data.
2.Create a separate empty MIDI track for the automation data that you
    wish to record.
This way, if something goes wrong, you can simply delete the automation data and try
    again.
3.Set the Output of the track so that it sends data to the desired HALion
    SE channel.
4.Open the HALion SE window and make sure that the correct sound
and channel are selected for automation and recording.
5.Press the Record button in Cubase SE to start recording.
Dynamically change the control settings as desired.
6.Stop recording and rewind. Then start playback.
The controls in the HALion SE window should now dynamically move and reflect the
    settings you have made.

Exporting HALion SE tracks to audio files
You can export one or more HALion SE MIDI tracks to an audio file, e. g.
to save processor resources. To do this, solo all tracks that you wish to
export (or mute all the other tracks) and select “Audio Mixdown…” from
the Export submenu on the File menu. A detailed description of the ex-
port process for audio files can be found in the Operation Manual.
    Using MIDI controllers
You can use MIDI controller data to control and edit HALion SE, e.g.
from an external MIDI hardware control unit or a MIDI Master keyboard.
You can also graphically or numerically create MIDI Controller data in
an Editor (e.g. the List Editor in Cubase SE). The following table
shows you the MIDI controller numbers accepted by HALion SE:

    Optimizing system performance
With instruments applying disk streaming - like HALion SE - issues
like glitches, drop-outs, high latency or slow performance are often
caused by a misconfigured or under-equipped system. This section
helps you to optimize your system performance and to solve problems.
Get as much RAM as possible
Depending on the library you use, HALion SE may have to deal with
large samples. It can get them from two sources: RAM or hard disk.
RAM is generally faster, easier to access and doesn’t have moving
parts, so you should make sure to get as much sample content as
    possible into RAM.
Rule of thumb: There’s nothing like too much RAM when working with
    sample-based instruments.
Use a dedicated hard disk for samples
If you have both your audio tracks and the HALion SE content on one
hard disk, it is likely that they get in each other’s way because the hard
disk has to stream both at a time. We strongly recommend that you
use separate disks for samples and audio tracks.
    Defragment your hard disk frequently
On a full or not regularly maintained hard disk it is likely that free space
is divided among a multitude of fragments. When installing large librar-
ies such as the Wizoo Composer Library, these files may be segmented
and spread over the entire disk. This means that the read head of the
hard disk has to do a lot of jumping in order to play back the files when
streaming from disk – leading to decreased disk performance.
You can optimize your hard disk’s performance by defragmenting the
hard disk directly after installation of HALion SE. Windows XP pro-
vides a defragmentation tool. On the Macintosh, you can use tools like
    Norton Utilities for that purpose.

    Dropouts, clicks, glitches
Dropouts, clicks or glitches can have many reasons, here are the most
    “popular” ones:
•If dropouts are accompanied by a red hard disk streaming indicator (LED bot-
tom left in the HALion SE window) , the hard disk cannot follow up. Reasons
can be manifold. For example the hard disk is too slow or just too fragmented,
or you play both audio tracks and strings from one hard disk. First try defrag-
menting your disk. If this doesn’t help, try to change the disk streaming setting
in HALion SE (see the section “Disk Streaming settings” on page 138).
•If dropouts occur on every note you play and/or are accompanied by unusu-
ally high CPU load, it is likely that the latency of your audio card is set too low.
Try increasing the latency (buffer size) in the audio card’s system settings.
•Also when you play multiple voices in multiple channels, the strain put on the
hard disk can just be too much. Try a lower disk load setting (see the section
“Disk Streaming settings” on page 138) to solve the problem.
Get help from the developers and other users
Apart from the Steinberg support, there is a very active and helpful
VST instrument forum at www.cubase.net where you can find help
and exchange info and solutions with other users of HALion SE as
    well as with the developers.
Point your browser to www.cubase.net and click “VST Instruments
and Virtual Effects” to get to the VST instrument forum.

    Composer Set Documentation
HALion SE comes with a Composer Set library from Wizoo, the com-
pany who has developed The Grand, Virtual Guitarist and other Stein-
berg VSTis. This composer set is a great starting point and has been
specifically designed to perfectly complement the other four instru-
    ments in the Studio Case.
