    Install the MDF
    !CAUTION:
    The op tional MDF is a sp ec ial 110 c ross-c onnec t field  and  is smaller than stand ard  
    110 c ross-c onnec t hard ware. Do not install stand ard  110 hard ware insid e the rig ht 
    p anel.
    NOTE:
    The dep th of any equip ment installed  insid e the rig ht p anel must not exc eed 2.5 
    inc hes (6.3 c m), otherwise the rig ht c over p anel c annot fit over the rig ht p anel.
    The op tional MDF rep resents the trunk/auxiliary field . 
    1. Mount the optional MDF to the right panel using one of the following: 
    nFor b ottom-mount MDFs, refer to ‘‘Bottom-mounted MDF with 
    Modem’’ on page 1-25. 
    nFor top -mount MDFs (in c ab inets other than c ab inet A), 
    refer to ‘‘Top-Mounted MDF’’ on page 1-27
    . 
    nFor d ual-mount MDFs, refer to ‘‘Dual MDFs’’ on page 1-28.
    Bottom-mounted MDF with Modem
    1. On the rear of the MDF, c ut the c ab le tie sec uring  the top  5 c ables to the 
    MDF mounting  frame. 
    2. Mount the MDF to the rig ht panel. See Figure 1-16
    . 
    3. Sec ure all 10 c ab les to the b ottom left b rac ket on the MDF with a c ab le tie.

    Use this c onfig uration when the c ab inet is wall-mounted , and is near the floor. Do 
    not use this c onfig uration for c ab inet A.

    Install the External Modem
    The U.S. Rob otic s Sp ortster Mod el USR 33.6 EXT external mod em is the 
    rec ommend ed external mod em. Release 8 CMC systems op erate with this 
    mod em set to the fac tory d efault setting s. 
    NOTE:
    You may use a loc ally ob tained , typ e-ap p roved  external mod em (33.6 kb p s 
    and  V.34 protoc ol). Contac t your Luc ent Tec hnolog ies rep resentative for 
    more information.
    1. Use installer-p rovid ed  hard ware to mount the mod em. See Figure 1-16
    . If 
    top -mounting  MDFs or d ual-mounting  MDFs, mount the external mod em to 
    the p lywood  in a loc ation whic h allows the stand ard  c onnec tion to the 
    interc onnec t c ab le.
    2. Route the MODEM c ab le (P2) from the Proc essor Interfac e Cab le throug h 
    the c ab le troug h and  to the mod em.
    3. Connec t the c ab le to the mod em. Refer to ‘‘Processor Interface Cable 
    Pinout’’ on page 2-11 for the p inout of the mod em c able.
    4. Plug  the mod em p ower c ord  into an elec tric al outlet and  turn on the 
    mod em.
    5. Mod em setup and  ad ministration is p erformed  in ‘‘External Modem Option 
    Settings’’ on page 1-107.

    Cross-Connect the Cabinets to the MDF
    1. Cross-c onnec t the ports on the trunk and  line c irc uit p ac ks to the MDF as 
    req uired. See Figure 1-21 on page 1-37
    .

    !CAUTION:
    When hand ling  c irc uit pac ks or any c omp onents of a DEFINITY System, 
    always wear an authorized  wrist g round  strap . Connec t the strap  to the 
    g round  c onnec tor provid ed  on the system c ab inet.
    NOTE:
    Unlike p revious releases of DEFINITY, the c irc uit p ac k slots in the CMC are 
    not p urp le or white. This is b ec ause all of the c irc uit p ac k slots in the CMC 
    are “ universal slots.”  That is, any slot c an c ontain any typ e of port circuit

    Circuit Pack Slot Loading
    In g eneral, load  the c irc uit pac ks so that the numb er of p ac ks in eac h c ab inet is 
    ab out eq ual and  the trunks and lines are evenly d istrib uted  among  the c ab inets. 
    See Figure 1-20
    . 
    1. Install the TN798B Proc essor c irc uit pac k in slot 1 of Cab inet A.
    2. Install the TN2182B Tone-Cloc k c irc uit p ac k in slot 2 of Cabinet A.
    Load  all p ort c irc uit p ac ks starting  with Cab inet A first, Cab inet B next, and  so 
    forth. Return to Cab inet A and  repeat.
    3. A TN744D Call Classifier/Tone Detec tor c irc uit p ac k may b e req uired  in 
    systems with heavy traffic . Install the TN744D into any p ort slot. Slot 1 of 
    Cab inet B is preferred .
