Upgrading R6csi/R7csi to R8csi 
This chapter provides the information to upgrade from a DEFINITY ECS 
Release 6c si and  Release 7c si system to a Release 8c si. If the c ab inet d oes not 
have a TN798B Proc essor c irc uit p ac k, you need  to install one. Refer to the 
DEFINITY Enterp rise Communic ations Server Maintenanc e for R8c si b ook for 
changing the proc essor circuit pack. Installation of the TN799 C-LAN circuit pac k 
is op tional.

Translation Card Upgrade Procedures
Releases 6 and 7 formatted  translation c ard s are c omp atib le with Release 8 
systems and , therefore, c an b e reused . It is not nec essary to ob tain a new 
Release 8 formatted translation card.
Usable Circuit Packs
Every p ort or c ontrol c irc uit p ac k used  in the up g rad ed  system must c onform to 
the minimum usab le vintag e requirements for Release 8. Those c irc uit p ac ks 
must meet the usab le vintag e sp ec ific ations. At a p resale site insp ec tion, the 
vintag es of every c irc uit p ac k must b e c hec ked. Rep lac e all unusab le vintag e 
c irc uit p ac ks with c urrent vintag es.
Refer to Tec hnic al Quarterly, Referenc e Guid e for Circ uit-Pac k Vintag es and  
Chang e Notic es, and  to the Software Release Letter for c urrent information ab out 
usab le vintag es. For information ab out usab le vintag es of international c irc uit 
p ac ks, refer to the ITAC Tec hnic al Alert from your reg ional d istrib utor.
Software Upgrade 
Even thoug h the Releases 6 and  7 translations up g rad e automatic ally to Release 
8, several features req uire sp ec ial attention b ec ause of sc reen c hang es or 
p otential naming  c onflic ts in the up date or up g rad e p roc ed ure.
Between c ustomer c onfirmation and  the ac tual up g rad e, the Software Sp ec ialist 
and  Assoc iate should  c hec k these forms to ensure the up g rad ed  translations are 
ap p rop riate for the c ustomer’s need s. Enter these translations either loc ally or 
remotely. If d one remotely, c ontac t the Field  Sup p ort Ad ministration Center 
(FSAC), with p ossib le assistanc e from the up g rad e tec hnic ian, for the remote 
entry. For more information, refer to:

There c an b e time g aps b etween step s and , sinc e the system c annot p revent

are attemp ted  d uring  the entire up g rad e p roc ess.
Antistatic Protection
!CAUTION:
When hand ling  c irc uit pac ks or any c omp onents of a DEFINITY System, 
always wear an antistatic  wrist g round  strap . Connec t the strap  to an 
ap p roved  g round  suc h as g round  jac k on the DEFINITY System.
