    Regulations
    Installation Safety warning

Only qualified persons should service this system.
The installation and service of this hardware is to be
performed only by service personnel having
appropriate training and experience necessary to be
aware of hazards to which they are exposed in
performing a task and of measures to minimize the
danger to themselves or other persons.
Electrical shock hazards from the telecommunication
network and AC mains are possible with this
equipment. To minimize risk to service personnel and
users, the system must be connected to an outlet with
    a third-wire ground.
Service personnel must be alert to the possibility of
high leakage currents becoming available on metal
system surfaces during power line fault events near
network lines. These leakage currents normally safely
flow to Protective Earth ground via the power cord.
Therefore, it is mandatory that connection to an
earthed outlet is performed first and removed last
when cabling the unit. Specifically, operations
requiring the unit to be powered down must have the
network connections (central office lines) removed
    first.

    Radio-frequency interference
    Telecommunication registration
Norstar equipment meets all applicable requirements of both Industry
Canada CS-03 and US Federal Commission FCC Part 68 and has been
registered under files Industry Canada 332-5980 A and FCC AB6CAN-
20705-KF-E (key system), AB6CAN-20706-MF-E (hybrid system), and
AB6CAN-23740-PF-E (PBX system). Connection of the Norstar key
telephone system to the nationwide telecommunications network is made
through a standard network interface jack that you can order from your
local telecommunications company. This type of customer-provided
equipment cannot be used on party lines or coin lines.
NOTICE: The Industry Canada label identifies certified equipment. This
certification means that the equipment meets certain telecommunications
network protective, operational and safety requirements. Industry Canada
does not guarantee the equipment will operate to the user’s satisfaction.

    Equipment generates RF energy.
This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate
radio-frequency energy. If not installed and used in
accordance with the installation manual, it may
cause interference to radio communications. It has
been tested and found to comply with the limits for a
    Clas s A comp ut i ng devi ce p ur s ua nt t o P ar t 15 of t h e
FCC Rules and with Canadian Radio Interference
Regulation SOR/88-475, which are designed to
    provide reasonable protection against such
interference when used in a commercial
environment. Operation of this equipment in a
residential area is likely to cause interference, in
which case the user, at his or her own expense, will
be required to take whatever measures may be
    required to correct the interference.

Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible
to be connected to the facilities of the local telecommunications company.
The equipment must also be installed using an acceptable method of
connection. It has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a
Class A computing device pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules and with
ICES.003, Class A Canadian EMI requirements.
Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized Canadian
maintenance facility designated by the supplier. Any repairs or alterations
made by the user to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give
the telecommunications company cause to request the user to disconnect
the equipment. Users should ensure for their own protection that the
electrical ground connections of the power utility, telephone lines and
internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together. This
precaution may be particularly important in rural areas.
CAUTION: Users should not attempt to make such connections
themselves, but should contact the appropriate electric inspection
    authority, or electrician, as appropriate.
Ringer Equivalence Number and Load Number
The FCC and Industry Canada Registration information, on the front of the
integrated communication system (ICS), includes the ringer equivalence
number (REN) and load number (LN). These numbers show the electrical
load that the Norstar ICS requires from a telephone line. If the ICS requires
more electrical current than the telephone companys central office
equipment can provide, telephones may not ring and you may have
    difficulty dialing telephone numbers.
In most areas, the total load on a line is allowed to be 5.0 REN or 100 LN.
Call the local telecommunications company to find out the total REN or LN
    allowed for your telephone line.
    Hearing-aid compatibility
Norstar telephones are hearing-aid compatible, as defined in
Section 68.316 of Part 68 FCC Rules.

    What’s new with Norstar
The Norstar Compact ICS 6.0 software includes several new features and
    a few functionality changes.
    New features for version 6.0
Distinctive ring for lines and hunt groups
You can now assign distinctive ring patterns (DRP) to both lines and
hunt groups. This is similar to the feature that allows you to assign
different rings to your telephone so you can distinguish which phone
is ringing. All three of these features work in concert with each other.
Which ring will be used depends on the priority that is assigned to
each, and the order in which the assignment occurred. Refer to
Distinctive ring on page 163 and Assigning a distinctive ring pattern
to a Hunt Group on page 197.
System wide call appearance feature codes (SWCA)
Sixteen new feature codes allow you to assign indicator memory
buttons with SWCA codes. These buttons provide call appearance for
both incoming and outgoing calls to any group of telephones with the
same assigned buttons. This allows a call to be parked on a SWCA
button, and then the call can be retrieved by any other member of the
    group.
Calls are assigned to the SWCA buttons, either automatically or
manually, at the telephone that receives or makes the call. This frees
up the line for other calls while maintaining an appearance of the call
in the group. Refer to Setting SWCA controls on page 209.
CLID display enhancements, alpha tagging using system speed dial,
    codes increased to 200
Alpha tagging is an enhancement to the CLID functionality of the
system. This feature matches incoming calls with system speed dial
entries. If enough digits match (CLID match), and the telephone is set
to receive name display, then whatever name is entered into the system
speed dial for that number will display as CLID when the call comes
in. Refer to Sys speed dial on page 187.

    							20 / What’s new with Norstar
    Compact ICS 6.0 Installer GuideP0992669 03
Note:Alpha tagging activates when the CO line service supplies
only a number for the incoming call. Otherwise, the system
uses the name supplied by the CO line service.
To support this feature, the system speed dial codes have been
increased to 200 entries, with three-digit codes from 001 to 255. Refer
to the Compact ICS 6.0 System Administrator Guide for a detailed
description of System Speed dial programming.
    Functionality changes for version 6.0
Profile 2: This profile has been adjusted to accommodate systems
which use ETSI PRI lines with an a-law companding protocol.
—T1 functionality has been removed from this profile.
—The central office ETSI PRI features: Network Call Redirection
and Malicious Caller ID (MCID) can be used if they are allowed
by your service provider. Refer to ETSI: Network features (profile
    2) on page 235.
Line renumbering: Due to the addition of ETSI to Profile 2, the line
numbering for the entire system has been realigned to accommodate
the extra lines provided by ETSI lines. This provides 30 lines per card
on module 2 (card 1: 001-030; card 2: 031-060). This also means that
the target lines have been renumbered to 061 to 086. When you
perform an upgrade, existing line assignments will be automatically
    updated.
Due to the expansion of the system speed dial feature codes up to 255,
the personal speed dial list has been changed to codes 256 to 279
(24 codes (no change from existing systems)).
