ATM switc h is more than one. If this is the c ase, the c alc ulator first attemp ts to
d etermine if the ap p lic ation is feasib le d esp ite the transit traffic . If it is, it rep orts
    the feasibility as YES
     or PROBABLY
. If not, it rep orts the feasib ility as
    UNKNOWN
, req uiring sp ec ial eng ineering .
Known limits of commonly used ATM switches
Use the limits shown in Table 1-8 to d o your own c alc ulations. To make it easier
as you use the c alc ulator, we sug g est that you
    1. Selec t and c op y the values from the tab le in the sp read sheet.
    2. Selec t the values on the samp le c alc ulation.
    3. Select Edit > Paste Special
with the transp ose option to p aste the values
    into the c alc ulator.
    NOTE:
These limits are the b est we c ould d etermine at one time. For eac h switc h,
the examp le shown is g enerally the b est you c an d o, assuming you b oug ht
the maximum c onfig uration and you ad ministered it op timally for DEFINITY
(whic h are not nec essarily the d efault setting s). Consult the switc h vend or
for c onfirmation of c urrent limits.

    Installing a DEFINITY ECS
    AT M - C E S
This chapter d escrib es the p roced ures for installing a new DEFINITY ECS
Release 8 ATM-CES The p roc ed ure is simp le in that you install the DEFINITY ECS
then install the ATM switc h and the TN2305/TN2306 interfac e c irc uit p ac ks.
Making it an ATM-CES is d one ad ministratively (refer to Chapter 5, ‘‘Administering
    ATM-PNC and ATM-CES’’).
    NOTE:
ATM-CES works only with TN2305/TN2306 ATM interfac e c irc uit p ac ks.
    Equipment Installation
To p rep are for a new DEFINITY ECS ATM-CES installation, you need to install the
DEFINITY ECS first. For instruc tions on installing DEFINITY ECS, refer to the
    following installation b ooks:
nDEFINITY Enterp rise Communic ations Server Release 8 Installation and
    Test for Multicarrier Cab inets
nDEFINITY Enterp rise Communic ations Server Release 8 Installation and
Test for Sing le-Carrier Cab inets
nDEFINITY Enterp rise Communic ations Server Release 8 Installation,
Up g rad es, and Ad d itions for Comp ac t Mod ular Cab inets
Review the reliab ility c onfig urations for DEFINITY Release 8 ATM (refer to Figure
    1-2 through Figure 1-4).
The slot restric tions for a CES c onfig uration are similar to ISDN-PRI c irc uit pac ks.
In PPNs and EPNs, ATM interfac e c irc uit pac ks c an oc c up y any available slot in
    a p ort c arrier.

    2
Follow the step s in Table 2-1 to ensure that
nthe ap p licab le equip ment is installed correctly.
nthe c ustomer’s c onfig uration is p rop erly rec ord ed (use worksheet in
Appendix A, ‘‘Baselining the Customer’s Configuration’’
    ).

    ÖStep Action Description
    1. Install DEFINITY ECS Refer to the appropriate installation book for your platform
    See
‘‘DEFINITY ECS configurations’’ on page 1-6 for
    connection schematics.
    2. Install ATM switch(es)
    or access
concentratorsRefer to your ATM switch’s quick reference guide.
    3.Install ATM interface
circuit packInsert the TN2305/TN2306 circuit pack(s) into the
    appropriate slot(s).
    4.Route the fiber optic
    cables between the
    ATM switch and the
    DEFINITY PPN and
EPNs.Follow the fiber pass-through procedure in the appropriate
    DEFINITY ECS installation book
    .
    !WA R N I N G :
Be sure that the fiber optic cable is secured so that
the door of the DEFINITY ECS switch does not pinch
    or bend the cable.
For csi platform, see Figure 2-1 for a diagram of the NAA7
board that routes fiber optic cabling from the back of the
    switch to the front.
    5.Connect the fiber
optic cablesConnect the fiber optic cables to the ATM switch.
    NOTE:
If the installation uses the customer’s existing fiber,
you may need an ST-to-SC adapter (1 included in
    Fiber Pass-Through Kit).
    6.Connect the fiber
    optic cables to the
    ATM interface circuit
packsConnect fiber optic cable to the SC connector on the
faceplate of each TN2305/TN2306 circuit pack in the
    DEFINITY PPN and EPN.
nThe TN2305/TN2306 circuit pack interface requires SC
connectors (see Note in Step 5).
nDo not reuse existing fiber cabling with ST connectors
at both the DEFINITY ECS and the ATM switch. This
requires an ST-to-SC adapter at both ends. It is better
to order the cable with the SC connectors at both ends.

    Te s t i n g
A DEFINITY ATM-PNC req uires network sync hronization for DS1 c irc uit p ac ks not
to slip relative to the LEC/IXC switc hes. The ATM switc h serves as the sync
referenc e sourc e for the DEFINITY. The ATM switc h, in turn, d erives p rimary and
sec ond ary sync . To ac c omp lish this, the most c ommon op tion is to use
sync hronization exp and ers (sp litters).
    7. Connec t the fib er
op tic cab les to the
    ATM interfac e circuit
packsConnect fiber op tic c ab le to the SC c onnec tor on the
facep late of each TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit pac k in the
    DEFINITY PPN and EPN.
nThe TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit p ac k interfac e req uires SC
c onnec tors (see Note in Step 5).
nDo not reuse existing fib er c abling with ST c onnec tors
at b oth the DEFINITY switc h and the ATM switc h. This
req uires an ST-to-SC ad ap ter at b oth end s. It is better
to ord er the c able with the SC c onnec tors at b oth

    8. Rec ord config uration Record DEFINITY ECS switc h-to-ATM port (p ort loc ations
for each ATM circuit p ack) in Table A-1
     (in Appendix A,
    ‘‘Baselining the Customer’s Configuration’’).
    NOTE:
Read the MAC ad d resses from the ATM switc h (refer
to your ATM switc h’s quick referenc e g uid e) and

    Connections without synchronization splitters
In some c onfig urations the ATM switc hes are trac ed to network c loc ks throug h
their SONET/SDH interfac es, not req uiring any sync hronization sp litters.
However, the ATM switc h c ould require a sing le sp litter if only one of the sync
sourc es is d erived from the network.
The ATM switc hes may obtain their network sync hronization as follows:
nThe ATM switc h g ets its network timing referenc e from its
SONET/SDH/SDIT interfac e to that network.
nOr if the c ustomer wants to use a DS1 sourc e for network sync hronization
that also hap p ens to b e a DEFINITY ECS switc h trunk, then one sync
sp litter is nec essary to send a c op y of that DS1 sig nal to the ATM switc h.
The DS1 c irc uit p ac k is only an ind irec t timing referenc e for the DEFINITY
    EC S sw it c h .
    Connections needing synchronization splitters
If the ATM network d oes not p rovid e a sync hronization exp and er (sp litter), then
the ATM c onfig urations may req uire one that takes a DS1 T1 or E1 signal and
red irec ts it to the
