    ATM call control
Are ATM signaling connections being setup to ATM switch Call Control?
The UBR virtual c irc uits b etween the ATM switc h PPN p ort and ATM switc h p ort
    and b etween the
EPN p ort and ATM switc h p ort are ATM sig naling c hannels
b etween the p ort network and the ATM switc h. They are used to req uest
c onnec tion setup s and releases to other end p oints suc h as another p ort
network. These are estab lished b y eac h TN2305/TN2306 when it c omes up,
indep end ent of DEFINITY Call Proc essing.
Other UBR virtual c irc uits may exist b etween ATM switc h p orts that are not
assoc iated with DEFINITY p ort networks and may b e sig naling c hannels for other
ap p lic ations (for examp le, d ata network traffic ).

Are talk paths being established between port networks?
    Diagnostics.
nCan you talk b oth ways on a set on one p ort network d ialed from another
    port network and vice versa?
    — The CBR (Constant Bit Rate) virtual c irc uits (VCs) b etween ATM
switc h PPN p ort and ATM switc h EPN p ort are used for talk p aths
b etween p ort networks (PPN to EPN, EPN to PPN, or EPN to EPN).
    — They are estab lished when c alls are first setup between p ort
networks. Eac h virtual c irc uit rep resents one p arty of a c omp lete
    multip arty talk p ath.
    — These virtual c irc uits may p ersist b eyond the d uration of a p hone
call. The DEFINITY Call Processing software saves virtual circuits
for a few sec ond s after the end stations have hung up in c ase the
VC c an b e used ag ain for another c all b etween the same two p ort
    networks. Also, c hec k 3-way c onferenc e c alling ac ross 3 port
    networks.
    — There may b e other CBR virtual c irc uits between ATM switc h p orts
that are not assoc iated with DEFINITY p ort networks. A c ommon
CBR ap p lic ation is Circ uit Emulation, in whic h T-1, T-3, and so forth
c irc uits are c arried over ATM.
    Unusual ATM trouble conditions
A few failure mod es in the DEFINITY ECS/ATM switc h c omb ination are
p artic ularly d iffic ult to d iag nose. One examp le mig ht b e that you c annot make a
completely succ essful c all even though most indications from DEFINITY ECS and
    the ATM switch look good.
This sec tion d oc uments some hints and c lues that may help d iag nose the
    following failure mod es:
nIncorrectly typed or omitted EPN route or end system identifier (ATM
    switch)
nSwapped routes, end system identifiers, or fiber between a PPN and an
    EPN
nSwapped routes, end system identifiers, or fiber between A- and B-side
    TN2305/TN2306s on EPN
nSwapped routes, end system identifiers, or fiber between two EPNs

Incorrectly typed or omitted EPN route or
    end system identifier (ATM switch)
    Symptoms
Talk p aths are one-way, from the PPN to the EPN: you c an hear tones from the
PPN end station to the EPN end station b ut not vic e versa. Bec ause the sig naling
c hannels are b id irec tional virtual c irc uits (VCs) estab lished from the PPN to the
EPN, these c an b e routed c orrec tly and c ome up just fine. Talk p aths are two
unid irec tional virtual c irc uits, so a sing le c all has one VC from the PPN to the EPN
(whic h is routed c orrec tly) and one VC from the EPN to the PPN (whic h c annot b e
    routed ).
    Diagnostics
    1. At the ATM switc h, c hec k the ATM ad dresses.
    2. Look for a c ause c od e 3 (No route to destination
    ).
    Action
    1. Correc t the ATM ad d ress translations in the ATM switc h.
Swapped routes, end system identifiers, or fiber
between a PPN and an EPN
    Symptoms
nAn inc orrec tly c onnec ted EPN TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit p ac k is not
    c omp letely inserted .
nDial tone is p resent on end stations on the PPN and on c orrec tly
c onnec ted EPNs, b ut no d ial tone is p resent on the affec ted EPN end
    stations.
nCalls c annot b e mad e b etween the PPN and the c orrec tly c onnec ted
EPNs b ec ause talk p aths c annot b e routed c orrec tly.
    Diagnostics
    1. Chec k to see if the ATM switc h shows VBR c ontrol c hannels from the ATM
switc h p ort intend ed for the inc orrec tly c onnec ted EPN (b ut ac tually
c onnec ted log ic ally or p hysic ally to the PPN) that should not exist.
    Action
    1. Correc t the ATM ad d resses (or swap fibers) on the ATM switc h b etween
the inc orrec tly c onnec ted PPN and EPN.

Swapped routes, end system identifiers, or fiber
    between two EPNs
    Symptoms
nAll TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit pac ks are c ompletely inserted .
nThe PPN c old starts b oth inc orrec tly c onnec ted EPNs as usual.
    nBo t h EPN s lo g m a n y WRONG BOARD INSERTED
     errors (list configuration
    all
     or display circuit-packs
carrier), p rovid ing the EPNs ac tually d o have
d ifferent c irc uit p ac ks c onfig ured in the same slots.
nSome end stations may work if they are c onnec ted to the c orrec t c irc uit
p ac k in the same slot on b oth EPNs. Otherwise, end stations on the PPN
have dial tone, while end stations on the EPNs d o not.
    nAll ATM switc h d iag nostic c ommand s look g ood .
    Diagnostics
    1. Check log for WRONG BOARD INSERTED
     errors (list configuration all
     or
    display circuit-packs
    carrier).
    Action
    1. Correc t the ATM ad d resses (or swap fibers) on the ATM switc h b etween
the inc orrec tly c onnec ted EPNs.
Swapped routes, end system identifiers, or fiber
    between A- and B-side TN2305/TN2306s on EPN
    Symptoms
nThe PPN estab lishes links to what it thinks is the ac tive TN2305/TN2306
c irc uit p ac k on the EPN.
nAs normal, it reb oots this TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit p ac k, and when
c omp lete, it resets the EPN. When this hap p ens, the ac tive (instead of the
    stand b y) TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit p ac k reboots, d ropp ing the links.
nTo rec over, the PPN re-estab lishes links to what it thinks is the ac tive
TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit p ac k and the c yc le repeats ind efinitely.
    Diagnostics
    1. Type status pnc
and p ress En t e r. The screen shows both the A-side and
    B-sid e State of Health
     field as partially functional
    .
    Action
    1. Correc t the ATM ad d resses (or swap fibers) on the ATM switc h b etween
the A and B side of the EPN.

network occurs. In such cases, SVC setups requested by DEFINITY can be
d enied b y the ATM network and assoc iated c omp onents, and c alls are not
    completed.
In this sec tion, a failed SVC setup means that the ATM network has ac tively
rejec ted the req uest. A d elayed SVC setup means that the SVC setup exc eed ed
a time threshold , sp ecified in milliseconds (ms).
Performanc e ind ic ators of b oth failed and d elayed SVC setup s:
nThe c alled p arty may hear ring ing , take the rec eiver off-hook, and hear
nothing . The c alled p arty may eventually rec eive a d elayed c all, b ut never
rec eives a failed c all.
nIf the c all was d elayed, the c alling p arty hears silenc e if one of the SVCs is
not up or hears the c alled p arty if it is up .
nIf the c all is never c omp leted , the c aller eventually hang s up without
knowing why the c all was not c omp leted .
Therefore, SVC failures that oc c ur more often than normal are most often
evid enc e of an ATM network that is out of sp ec ific ation.
The tools to manag e the DEFINITY ECS switc h and the ATM network are
    nAlarming out-of-spec conditions
    nSVC latency commands
nAdministration threshold s to either allow or d eny c ompletion of c alls that
req uire a new SVC over a p ath that rec ently exp erienc ed a hig h numb er of
    delayed or failed SVCs.
