Your Responsibility for Your System’s Security
Toll fraud is the unauthorized use of your telecommunications system
by an unauthorized party, for example, persons other than your com-
pany’s employees, agents, subcontractors, or persons working on your
company’s behalf. Note that there may be a risk of toll fraud associated
with your telecommunications system and, if toll fraud occurs, it can
result in substantial additional charges for your telecommunications
    services.
You and your system manager are responsible for the security of your
system, such as programming and configuring your equipment to pre-
vent unauthorized use. The system manager is also responsible for
reading all installation, instruction, and system administration docu-
ments provided with this product in order to fully understand the fea-
tures that can introduce risk of toll fraud and the steps that can be taken
to reduce that risk. Lucent Technologies does not warrant that this
product is immune from or will prevent unauthorized use of com-
mon-carrier telecommunication services or facilities accessed through
or connected to it. Lucent Technologies will not be responsible for any
charges that result from such unauthorized use.
    Lucent Technologies Fraud Intervention
If you suspect that you are being victimized by toll fraud and you need
technical support or assistance, call Technical Service Center Toll
Fraud Intervention Hotline at 1 800 643-2353 or contact your local
    Lucent representative.

be operated in a manner that does not provide proper answer-supervi-
sion signaling is in violation of Part 68 Rules. This equipment returns
answer-supervision signals to the public switched network when:
    • Answered by the called station
    • Answered by the attendant
    • Routed to a recorded announcement that can be administered by
the CPE userThis equipment returns answer-supervision signals on all DID calls
forwarded back to the public switched telephone network. Permissible

    About This Book
    vi Overview
    Overview
The DEFINITY ATM (async hronous transfer mod e) c ombines p ortions of the
DEFINITY p latform with an ATM switc h p latform that meets sp ec ific c riteria.
DEFINITY ATM offers b oth intraswitc h and interswitc h ATM solutions. The
intraswitc h solution is c alled the ATM p ort network c onnec tivity, or ATM-PNC, and
the interswitch solution is c alled ATM circuit emulation service, or ATM-CES.
ATM-PNC is only availab le on the R6.3r or later p latform.
ATM-PNC p rovid es an alternative to either the d irec t c onnec t or c enter stag e
switc h c onfigurations for c onnec ting the p roc essor p ort network (PPN) to one or
more exp ansion p ort networks (EPNs). ATM-PNC is availab le with four DEFINITY
ECS reliab ility op tions—stand ard , hig h, ATM network d up lic ation, and c ritic al.
Customers must c hoose whether they want direc t c onnec t, CSS, or ATM-PNC. It
is not p ossib le to mix c onfig urations in the same R8r p latform.
ATM-CES lets the DEFINITY ECS emulate an ISDN-PRI trunk on an ATM fac ility.
These virtual trunks c an serve as integ rated ac c ess, tand em, or tie trunks.
ATM-CES emulates up to 8 ISDN sp ans on a sing le OC-3/STM-1 ATM interfac e.
ATM wid e area network (ATM-WAN) extend s the port network c onnec tivity
b eyond a sing le ATM switc h over large d istanc es. This allows you to use either a
p rivate ATM network, p ub lic WAN or a c omb ination of b oth. Several networked
ATM devic es c an b e used as effec tively as a sing le ATM switc h for inter-p ort
    network c onnec tivity.
The DEFINITY ECS switc h c an c onnec t throug h several ATM switc h types, many
of whic h are sold throug h Luc ent’s InterNetworking Systems (INS) c hannel,
formerly know as DNS. Also, DEFINITY ECS switc hes are d esig ned to work
seamlessly with non-Luc ent ATM switc hes that meet ATM stand ard s set b y the
    European Union.
