    Administering DEFINITY ECS
The DEFINITY ECS switc h software p rovid es 2 kind s of ATM servic e:
    nATM Port Network Connectivity (ATM-PNC)
    nATM Circuit Emulation Service (ATM-CES)
Table 5-3 outlines imp ortant c onc ep ts to ob serve when ad ministering ATM.
Table 5-3. General DEFINITY ECS ATM parameters
    Concept Description
PNC d up lic ation If you are installing or up g rad ing a c ritic al reliab ility system, you must enab le
the PNC d uplication on the system-parameters c ustomer-op tions sc reen
(init p assword required ) before the feature can be used . If it is enabled, you
    must further
nAdd pnc-a or pnc-b to c ommand string s to c larify whic h c arrier the ATM
interface circuit p ack is in
nSpec ify the loc ation of the ATM interfac e c irc uit p ac k serving as the
    d uplicate
The ATM interface circuit p ack in the A c arrier must be in the same p ort
network as the B c arrier. If not, an alarm is issued. You need not ad minister
ATM interfac e c ircuit p ac ks serving as b ackup s to eac h other with the same
    p arameters.
Fib er links You d o not need to ad minister fib er links for ATM-PNC. Information on the
ATM c irc uit p ac k screen id entifies whic h p ac ks are used for PNC
(endp oint-1), and end p oint-2 is ad ministered on the ATM switc h.
    Remote switch
ad ministrationA remote switch c onnec ted with a p ermanent virtual c irc uit (PVC). The
DEFINITY system rec og nizes the remote switc h as a nod e with c omp atib le
c irc uit p arameters at the other end of an emulated circ uit.
You c an c onnec t a remote switch to the DEFINITY with one or more
CES-emulated c ircuits. In suc h a c ase, the emulated c irc uits remain
    discrete.
Synchronization PNC—All synchronization is derived from the ATM switch provid ing port
c onnectivity. The ATM switc h ob tains sync hronization from either a sync
sp litter attac hed to one or two DS1 card s or from the ATM network.
CES—Synchronization is d erived the same way it is in a non-ATM-PNC or
ATM-PNC environment, whic hever app lies.
