    ÖStep Action Description
    1. Verify PVC is c orrectly
    ad ministeredCheck VPI/VCI (change signaling-group
     siggrpnbr,
    screen 2)
    2.Check channel
numb erCheck that b oth end s of the emulated c ircuit have the
same numb er of c hannels (change signaling-group

    siggrpnbr
    , screen 2).
    3. Check trunks Both end s of the emulated circuit have the same numb er
    of trunks (change trunk-group
    trkgrpnbr, sc reen 6).
    NOTE:
A trunk group can c ontain either ISDN or ATM trunks
    b ut not b oth.
    4. Check channels Both end s of the emulated circuit use the same channel
    numb ers (change signaling-group
    siggrpnbr, screen 2).
Use the same c hannel numb ers for the p ort to c hannel
map p ing (p ag e 2) for the other end . See
    ‘‘Changing the
port-to-channel mapping’’ on page 5-22 for more
    information.
    5. Chec k maximum
    numb er of emulated
circuitsThe maximum numb er of emulated c ircuits (signaling
    g roup s) on a sing le ATM c irc uit p ac k is 8.
nEach circuit pack can have more than one signaling
g roup and more than one D-c hannel
nThe D-channel from one emulated c ircuit c annot
sig nal for the bearer channels of another emulated
circuit (no Nonfac ility Assoc iated Signaling for virtual
    circuits).
    6. Check minimum ports
for emulated c irc uitA minimum of 7 p orts must b e administered for eac h
emulated c irc uit as follows:

nBe aware that c ustomers may use other p orts on the ATM switc h for
ap p lic ations unrelated to DEFINITY (LAN traffic or multimed ia
ap p lic ations, for examp les).
nThese other applications may manifest themselves in the output of
the troub leshooting c ommand s you run on the ATM switc h.
DEFINITY p ort networks must be id entified by their ATM switc h p ort
    numb ers.
    NOTE:
The following examples show DEFINITY p ort networks
    c onnec ted to ATM switc h p orts A1.1 and A1.2.
2.Does the TN2305/TN2306’s YELLOW LED flash 100 ms on and 100 ms off,
indic ating a loss of sig nal on the fiber? Rec all that the TN2305/TN2306
d etec ts c ontinuity p rob lems with either the transmit (b ottom) or the rec eive
    (top ) fib ers.
If the fib er shows a loss of signal, refer to the “ Fiber Fault Isolation
Proc ed ure” in DEFINITY ECS Maintenanc e for R8r.
    3. Is the ATM switc h port’s LED ind ic ating a loss of sig nal on the fib er? Note
that the ATM switc h may d etec t c ontinuity p roblems only with the rec eive
fib er; the state of the transmit fib er mig ht not b e d etec ted .
    4. Refer to your ATM switc h’s q uic k referenc e g uid e for troub leshooting
    commands.
    Possible causes.
Check the following list for possible c auses.
nThe fib er is d isc onnec ted from the ATM switc h and /or the TN2305/TN2306
    circuit pack.
nThe transmit and rec eive fib ers are swap p ed at the ATM switc h or the
    TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit p ac k (b ut not b oth).
nThere is a b reak in the fib er.
nThe TN2305/TN2306 is not transmitting a c arrier (not inserted , not
p owered , or not ad ministered ). See the ATM-TRK maintenanc e
ob jec t in one of the following b ooks:

nThe ATM switc h d oes not rec og nize that a port c irc uit p ac k is in the slot.
You may need to re-ad minister the ATM switc h p ort b oard s. Refer to your
    ATM switc h’s q uic k referenc e g uid e for further information.
    Recommended Action.
    1. Plug in, swap , rep air, or rep lac e the fib er as nec essary.
    2. Verify that the port c irc uit p ac k is c omp letely inserted .
    SONET/SDH layer
Are SONET/SDH frames reaching the ATM switch?
Is the ATM switch port’s LED indicating no cell traffic?
nChec k the transmit and rec eive c ell c ount field s. Eac h field ’s values
should b e inc reasing if the TN2305/TN2306 is ac tively send ing and
rec eiving c ells to and from the ATM switc h.
nChec k for SONET/SDH layer alarms, LOP, LOF, LOS, and so on.
nIf neither field is inc reasing , the ATM switc h p ort may be d own. Verify that
the ad min status is up .
nIf the rec eive c ell c ount is inc reasing b ut the transmit c ell c ount is not
inc reasing , this may b e b ec ause the p ort was ad ministered with no UNI
signaling. Ensure that signaling is UNI3.1.
nAlthoug h the error c ounters may not b e zero, they should not b e larg e
either c omp ared with the rec eive and transmit c ell c ounters. If the
c ounters are larg e and inc reasing , c hec k the fib er integ rity. Make sure the
fib er p airs are sec urely p lugg ed into b oth the TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit p ac k
    and the ATM switc h.
nIf the fib er has b een p ulled and reinserted as p art of fault diag nosis, the
nonzero loss of sig nal error c ounter may b e c orrec t.

nThese are established once when initialized under control of DEFINITY
Call Proc essing. They rep resent the ATM Control Link (ACL) and
Exp ansion Arc hang el Link (EAL).
nVBRnrt virtual c irc uits are also used for ISDN c hannels b etween DEFINITY
    p ort networks.
nOther VBRnrt virtual c irc uits may exist b etween ATM switc h p orts that are
not assoc iated with DEFINITY p ort networks. A c ommon use of VBRnrt
c irc uits is multimed ia and vid eo-c onferenc ing systems.

    — These virtual c irc uits may p ersist b eyond the d uration of a p hone
call. The DEFINITY Call Processing software saves virtual circuits
for a few sec ond s after the end stations have hung up in c ase the
VC c an b e used ag ain for another c all b etween the same two p ort
    networks.
    — There may b e other CBR virtual c irc uits between ATM switc h p orts
that are not assoc iated with DEFINITY p ort networks. A c ommon
CBR ap p lic ation is Circ uit Emulation, in whic h T-1, T-3, and so forth
c irc uits are c arried over ATM.
    Unusual ATM trouble conditions
A few failure mod es in the DEFINITY ECS/ATM switc h c omb ination are
p artic ularly d iffic ult to d iag nose. One examp le mig ht b e that you c annot make a
completely succ essful c all even though most indications from DEFINITY ECS and
    the ATM switch look good.
This sec tion d oc uments some hints and c lues that may help d iag nose the
    following failure mod es:
nIncorrectly typed or omitted EPN route or end system identifier (ATM
    switch)
nSwapped routes, end system identifiers, or fiber between a PPN and an
    EPN
Incorrectly typed or omitted EPN route or
    end system identifier (ATM switch)
    Symptoms
Talk p aths are one-way, from the PPN to the EPN: you c an hear tones from the
PPN end station to the EPN end station b ut not vic e versa. Bec ause the sig naling
c hannels are b id irec tional virtual c irc uits (VCs) estab lished from the PPN to the
EPN, these c an b e routed c orrec tly and c ome up just fine. Talk p aths are two
unid irec tional virtual c irc uits, so a sing le c all has one VC from the PPN to the EPN
(whic h is routed c orrec tly) and one VC from the EPN to the PPN (whic h c annot b e
    routed ).
    Diagnostics
    1. At the ATM switc h, c hec k the ATM ad dresses.
    2. Look for a c ause c od e 3 (No route to destination
    ).
    Action
    1. Correc t the ATM ad d ress translations in the ATM switc h.

    Symptoms
nAn inc orrec tly c onnec ted EPN TN2305/TN2306 c irc uit p ac k is not
    c omp letely inserted .
nDial tone is p resent on end stations on the PPN and on c orrec tly
c onnec ted EPNs, b ut no d ial tone is p resent on the affec ted EPN end
    stations.
nCalls c annot b e mad e b etween the PPN and the c orrec tly c onnec ted
EPNs b ec ause talk p aths c annot b e routed c orrec tly.
    Diagnostics
    1. Chec k to see if the ATM switc h shows VBR c ontrol c hannels from the ATM
switc h p ort intend ed for the inc orrec tly c onnec ted EPN (b ut ac tually
c onnec ted log ic ally or p hysic ally to the PPN) that should not exist.
    Action
    1. Correc t the ATM ad d resses (or swap fibers) on the ATM switc h b etween
the inc orrec tly c onnec ted PPN and EPN.
