    To use t he MFC as a Net work Scanner, the NC-9100h Network 
    board should be installed into t he MFC (MFC-8820DN standard) and 
    configured with TCP/IP and mail server set tings if you use Scan to 
    E-mail (E-mail server). You can set or change NC-9100h settings 
    from the control panel or with the BRAdmin Professional utility or 
    Web Management. (Please s ee the NC-9100h Users Guide on the 
    CD-ROM.)
    Registering your PC with the MFC
    If you need to change the MFC t hat was registered to your PC during 
    the installation of MFL-Pro (see Quick Setup Guide on page 38), 
    follow t he steps below.
    1For Windows® 98/Me/2000 
    From the Sta rt menu, select Control panel, Scanners and 
    Cameras, and then right-click Scanner Device icon and select 
    Properties to view t he Network Scanner Propert ies dialog box.
    For Windows
    ® XP
    From the Sta rt menu, select Control panel, Printers and 
    O the r Hardwa re, Sca nne r a nd Ca meras (or Control  panel, 
    Sca nne rs and  Came ras).

    Right-click Scanner Device icon and select properties to view 
    the Network Scanner Properties dialog box.
    2Click the Network Setting tab in the dialog box and select a 
    method to specify t he MFC as a Network scanner for your PC.

    Search from a list of available device
    Click Browse and select t he appropriate device you want to use.
    Click OK.
    Click Apply and then OK.
    3Click the Scan To Button tab in the dialog box and enter your 
    PC Name in the Display Name field. The MFCs LCD displays 
    t he Name you enter. Default setting is your PC Name. You can 
    enter a name if you like.
    4You can avoid receiving unwanted documents by sett ing a 
    4-digit PIN Number. Enter your PIN Number in the PIN Number 
    and Retype PIN Number field. To send data to a PC protected 
    by a PIN Number, the LCD prompts t o enter the PIN Number 
    before the document can be scanned and sent to the MFC.  (See 
    Using the Scan key on page 19-4 t o 19-8.)

    Using the Scan key
    Scan to E-mail (PC)
    When you select Scan t o E-mail (PC) your original will be scanned 
    and sent directly to the PC you designated on your network. The 
    Brother SmartUI will activate the default E-mail application on the 
    designated PC f or addressing to the recipient. You can scan a black 
    and white or color original and it will be sent with the E-mail from the 
    PC as an attachment. 
    You can change the   (
    Scan) configuration. For Windows® 
    98/98SE/Me/2000: (See Scan to E-mail on page 14-10 to 14-11.) 
    (For Windows
    ® XP: See Hardware Section: Changing t he Scan to 
    button conf iguration on page 15-5 t o 15-9.)
    1Place the original face up in the ADF, or face down on t he 
    scanner glass.
    2Press  (Scan).
    3Press  or  to select Scan 
    to E-mail.
    Press 
    Set.
    4Press   or   to select PC.
    Press 
    Set.
    —OR—
    If t here isnt other selection, go to Step 5.
    5Press   or   to select the destination PC you want to use 
    for E-mailing your original.
    Press 
    Set.
    If the LCD prompts you to enter a PIN Number, enter t he 4-digit 
    PIN Number for the destination PC on the control panel.
    Press 
    Set.
    The MFC will st art the scanning process.
    For Network Scanning the Brot her Control Center (SmartUI) 
    select ions are used only for configuring the 
    Scan button.  You 
    will not be able to initiate a Network scan from the Brother 
    Cont rol Center (SmartUI).

    Scan to E-mail (E-mail server)
    When you select Scan to E-mail (E-mail server) you can scan a black 
    and white or color original and send it directly to an E-mail address 
    from t he MFC. Your original is sent as an E-mail att achment in a TI FF 
    format for Black and White or you can choose PDF or JPEG for color.
    1Place the original face up in the ADF, or face down on the 
    scanner glass.
    2Press  (Scan).
    3Press   or   to select Scan to E-mail.
    Press 
    Set.
    4Press   or   to select 
    E-mail Server.
    Press 
    Set.
    —OR—
    I f there isnt other selection, go to Step 5.
    5Press   or   to select Change Quality.
    Press 
    Set.
    6Press   or   to select Color 150 dpi, Color 300 
    dpi, Color 600 dpi, B/W 200 dpi or B/W 200×100 dpi.
    Press 
    Set.
    If you select B/W 200 dpi or B/W 200×100 dpi in Step 6, go 
    t o Step 8.
    —OR—
    If you select Color 150 dpi, Color 300 dpi or Color 600 
    dpi in Step 6, go to Step 7.
    7Press   or   to select PDF or JPEG.
    Press 
    Set.
    8The LCD prompts you to enter an address. Enter the destination E-mail 
    address from the dial pad or use the One-Touch key or Speed-Dial key.
    9Press Start.
    The MFC will start the scanning process.
    Scan to E-mail (E-mail Server) requires SMTP/POP3 mail 
    server support. (See NC-9100h User’s Guide on the CD-ROM)

    When you select Scan t o Image your original will be scanned and 
    sent directly to the PC you designated on your network. The Brother 
    SmartUI will activate the default graphics application on t he 
    designated PC. You can change the Scan configuration. (For

    ® 98/Me/ 2000: See Scan to Image on page 14-14.) (For 
    Windows

    configuration on page 15-5 to 15-10.)

    Scan to OCR
    When you select Scan to OCR your original will be scanned and sent 
    directly to the PC you designated on your network. The Brother SmartUI 
    will activate ScanSoft
    ® TextBridge® and convert your original into text 
    for viewing and editing from a word processing application on the 
    designated PC.  You can change 
    t he Scan configuration.

    page 14-12 t o 14-13.) (For Windows® XP: See Hardware Section: 
    Changing the Scan to button configuration on page 15-5 to 15-11.)
    1Place the original face up in the ADF, or face down on the

    Scan to File
    When you select Scan to File you can scan a black and white or color 
    original and send it directly to a PC you designate on your network. The 
    file will be saved in the folder and file format that you have configured in 
    the Brother SmartUI on the designated PC. You can change 
    the Scan 
    configuration.

    Max. 25 clients can be connect ed t o one MFC on a Network.  For 
    example, if 30 clients t ry to connect at a time, 5 client s will not 
    be shown on the LCD.

    To use t he MFC as a Net work PC-FAX, the NC-9100h Network 
    board should be installed into t he MFC (MFC-8820DN standard) and 
    configured with TCP/IP and mail server set tings if you use Scan to 
    E-mail (E-mail server). (See Using Brother PC-FAX software on 
    page 17-1.)
    Enab le Network PC-FAX
    To use t he MFC for Network PC-FAX, see Using Brother PC-FAX 
    software on page 17-1.
    Brother Network PC-FAX can be configured through PC-FAX Setup, 
    Sending tab.   
    Sending setup
    In order to use the full functionality of Network PC-FAX it is strongly 
    recommended that you enable the Network PC-FAX Setup option on 
    the Sending tab Brother PC-FAX Setup.
    1Access t he Sending Tab from the PC-FAX dialog box by 
    clicking . 
    —OR—
    From the Sta rt menu, select All programs, Brother,  Brot her 
    MFL-Pro Suite,  and t hen select PC- FAX Se tup.
    Brother Network PC-FAX 
    software
    The items described below are specific items relating to the 
    Network version of PC-FAX sof tware that is installed from the 
    Optional network applications on the CD-ROM supplied wit h 
    your MFC.

    This software can be used in a network environment and with a 
    locally connected machine. It is important that when used in a 
    network environment the Network PC Fax is set to enable.
