11 - 14 USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER 5Put the envelopes in the MP tray so that they touch the back of the tray. Do not put more than 3 envelopes in the MP tray at any one time, or it may cause a jam. Make sure that the envelopes are neatly stacked and in the proper position in the MP tray. If they are not, t he envelopes may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed print out or a jam.

When you put envelopes in the MP tray, please remember the following; ■During printing, the inside tray rises to f eed envelopes into the MFC. ■The side to be print ed on must be face up. ■Put the leading edge (t op of the envelope) in first and push it gently int o the tray.

Only those people that know the password will be able to print the data. The MFC will not print secure data until the password is entered. After the document is print ed, the data will be cleared from the memory. To use this function, you need t o set your password in t he printer driver dialog box. (See Device Options on page 12-11.) 1Press Secure. —OR— The LCD displays No Data! if there is no secured data in the memory. 2Press or to select the user name. Press Set. The LCD displays job selections. 3Press or to select the job. Press Set. The LCD prompts you to enter your four-digit password. The MFC prints the data. —OR— If you want to delete the secured data press or to select Delete. Press Stop/Exit. Setting the Emulation Selection This MFC has an Automatic Emulation Selection function. When the MFC receives information from the PC, it automat ically chooses the emulation mode. This function has been set at the fact ory to AUTO. You can change the default emulation mode manually by using the control panel. 1Press Menu, 4, 1. 2Press or to select Auto, HP Laser Jet or BR-Script3. Press Set. 3Press Stop/Exit. ■If you turn the power switch Off, the secured data saved in memory will be cleared. ■After you print the secured data it will be cleared from memory. Try this function wit h your application software or network server. If the function does not work properly, either select the required emulation mode manually using the MFC panel buttons or use the emulation selection commands in your soft ware. 11 - 18 USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER Printing the Internal Font List You can print a list of the MFC’s internal (or resident ) fonts to see how each font looks before you select it . 1Press Menu, 4, 2, 1. 2Press Start. The MFC prints the list. 3Press Stop/Exit. Printing the Print Configuration List You can print a list of current printer settings. 1Press Menu, 4, 2, 2. 2Press Start. The MFC prints the settings. 3Press Stop/Exit. Restoring factory default settings You can return the MFC to the original factory settings. Fonts and macros in the temporary settings are cleared. 1Press Menu, 4, 3. 2Press 1 to restore the f actory settings —OR— Press 2 to exit without making a change. 3Press Stop/Exit. How to access the printer driver settings 1Select Pr int from the File menu in your application software. 2Select Brot her MFC-842 0 or MFC-8820D (USB) Printer as your printer and click Preferences for Windows® 2000/XP (Properties for Windows®95/98/98SE and Me, Document Default for Windows NT® 4.0). The Printing Preferences dialog box will appear. Printer driver settings (Windows® Only) The way you access the printer driver settings depends on your operating system and software applicat ions. The screens shown in this section are from Windows® XP. The screens on your Computer may vary depending on your Windows Operating System. Some descriptions in this chapt er are based on the MFC-8820D. These descriptions also apply to the MFC-8420 and MFC-8820DN.
12 - 2 PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGS Features in the Brother Native Driver The Brother Native driver is a printer driver developed exclusively by Brother, this driver includes more features than the Microsoft® Windows® Universal printer driver. Basic tab 1Select the Paper Size, Multiple Page, Border Line (if any) and Orientation. 2Select number of Copies and M edi a Type. 3Select Paper Source (First Page and Other Pages). 4Auto Select allows the printer driver to select a suitable t ray f or Paper Size automatically. You can set the paper size for each tray in the Accessories tab. (See Accessories tab on page 12-15.) To return to the default settings, click the Default button. 1 2 3 4
PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGS 12 - 3 Paper Size From the drop-down box select the Paper Size you are using. Multiple Pa ge The Multiple Page selection can reduce the image size of a page allowing multiple pages to be printed on one sheet of paper or enlarging t he image size for printing one page on multiple sheet s of paper. Border Line When printing multiple pages on one sheet wit h the Multiple Page feature you can select to have a solid border, dash border or no border around each page on the sheet. Orientation Orientation selects the position of how your document will be printed (Portrait or Landscape). Ex. 4 in 1 Ex. 1 in 2 × 2 pages Portrait Landscape
12 - 4 PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGS Copies The copies selection sets the number of copies that will be printed. Collate Wit h the Collate check box selected, one complete copy of your document will be printed and then repeated for t he number of copies you selected. If the Collate check box is not selected, then each page will be printed for all the copies selected before the next page of the document is printed. Media Type You can use the following types of media in your MFC. For the best print quality, select the t ype of media that you wish to use. Pl ain Pap er Thin Paper Thick Paper Thicker Paper Bond Pape r Transparencies Envelopes Env. Thick Env. Thin ■When using ordinary plain paper (19 t o 25 lb), select Pla in Paper. When using heavier weight paper, envelopes or rough paper select Thick Pa per or Thicker Paper. For bond paper, select Bond Paper for OHP transparencies, select Transparencies. ■When you use envelopes, select Envelopes. If the toner is not fixed to t he envelope correctly when Envelopes has been selected, select Env. Thic k. If the envelope is crumpled when Envelopes has been selected, select Env. Thin.
