10 - 12 MAKING COPIES Duplex/N in 1 copy N in 1 copy You can save paper by copying either two or f our pages onto one page. Please make sure paper size is set to A4, Letter or Legal. 1Press (Copy) to illuminate it in green. Place the original face up in the ADF, or face down on the scanner glass. 2Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want (upto99). 3Press Duplex/N in 1. Press Set to select N in 1. 4Press or to select 2 in 1(P), 2 in 1(L), 4 in 1(P)or 4 in 1(L). Press Set. 5If you are ready to copy, go to Step 7. —OR— Press or to select Quality, Contrast or Tray. Press Set. 6Press or to select a new setting. Press Set. 7Press Start. If you are using the ADF, the MFC scans the originals and prints the copies. —OR— If you are using the scanner glass, the MFC scans the page. Place the next original on the scanner glass. 8Select 1 and press Set, or press 1, to copy next page. 9Repeat Step 7 and 8 for each page of the layout. 10After all the pages of the original have been scanned, select 2 and press Set, or press 2, to print the copies. MAKING COPIES 10 - 13 Poster You can make a poster size copy of a photograph. You must use the scanner glass. 1Place the original face down on the scanner glass. 2Press Du plex/N in 1 and or to select Poster. Press Set. 3Press Start. The MFC starts scanning the original and prints the pages for t he poster. Duplex (1 in 1) (For MFC-8820D and MFC-8820DN) Make a double-sided copy from a single-sided original 1Press (Copy) to illuminate it in green. Place the original f ace up in the ADF, or face down the scanner glass. 2Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want (up to 99). 3Press Du plex/N in 1 and or to select Duplex(1 in 1). Press Set. (P) means Portrait and (L) means Landscape. You can also combine the N in 1 and Duplex operations. (See Duplex (2 in 1) and Duplex (4 in 1) (For MFC-8820D and MFC-8820DN) on page 10-15.) For 2 in 1(P), 2 in 1(L), 4 in 1 (P) or 4 in 1 (L), you can not use the Enlarge/Reduce setting. For Poster copies, you cannot make more than one copy or use t he Enlarge/Reduce setting. 211 2
10 - 14 MAKING COPIES 4Press or to select Portrait1, Portrait2, Landscape1 or Landscape2. —OR— If you select Portrait1 or Landscape2, go t o Step 6. Press Set. 5Press or to select Single Sided for the original (If you are using the scanner glass or changed the number of copies at Step 2, this option will not appear). Press Set. 6Press Start to scan the original. If you placed the original in the ADF, t he MFC start s printing. —OR— If you placed the original on the scanner glass, go to Step 7. 7Place the next original on the scanner glass. Select 1 and press Set or press 1 to copy next page. After all the pages of the original have been scanned, select 2 and press Set, or press 2 to print. Mak e a double- sided copy f rom a double -sided ori ginal (Not available for multiple copies) 1Press (Copy) to illuminate it in green. Place the original face up in the ADF. 2Press Duplex/N in 1 and or to select Duplex(1 in 1). Press Set. 3Press or to select Portrait2 or Landscape1. Press Set. 4Press or to select Double Sided for the original. 5Press Set. 6Make sure that you have put t he original in the ADF as shown on the LCD and press Start. 7After all the pages of the original have been scanned on one side, turn the ot her side of the original face up in the ADF. Contrast You can change the contrast to help an image look lighter or darker. 1Press Menu, 3, 2. 2Press to make lighter. —OR— Press to make darker. Press Set. 3Press Stop/Exit. USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER 11 - 1 11 Using the Brother MFC-8420, MFC-8820D or MFC-8820DN printer driver A Printer Driver is software that t ranslat es data from the format used by a computer into the format required by a particular print er, using a printer command language or page description language. The printer drivers are on the CD-ROM we have supplied. Install the drivers first by following the Quick Setup Guide. Also, the latest printer driver can be downloaded from the Brother Solutions Center at: Windows ® Printing The dedicated printer driver and TrueType ™ compatible fonts for Microsoft® Windows® 95/98/98SE/Me/2000 Professional/XP and Windows NT® workst ation 4.0 are available on the CD-ROM supplied with your MFC. You can install them easily into your Windows ® system using our installer program. The driver supports our unique compression mode to enhance printing speed in Windows ® applications, and allows you to set various printer sett ings, including economy printing mode and custom paper size. Popular Printer Emulation Support The MFC supports HP LaserJet (PCL level 6) and BR-Script 3 (PostScript ®3™) printer emulation mode. If you use DOS application soft ware, you can use HP LaserJet (PCL level 6) and BR-Script 3 (PostScript ®3™) emulation mode f or printer operations. 11 - 2 USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER How to print your document When the MFC receives data from your computer, it begins printing by picking up paper f rom t he paper t ray. The paper tray can feed many types of paper and envelopes. 1From your computer select the Print command. If your computer is also connected to any other printers, select Brother MFC-8420 or MFC-8820D (USB) Printer as your printer driver from the Print or Print Sett ings menu in your soft ware application, and then click on OK to begin printing. 2Your computer sends a print command and data t o the MFC. 3The LED blinks in yellow and the MFC starts to print. If your application software does not support your custom paper size, select the next largest paper size. Then adjust the print area by changing the right and left margins in your application software. You can select the paper size, and orientation in your application sof tware.
USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER 11 - 3 Simultaneous printing and faxing Your MFC can print from your computer while sending or receiving a fax, and scanning the original into the computer. Fax sending will not be stopped during PC printing. Two-sided printing (Duplex Printing) The supplied printer driver supports duplex printing. (For more information, see Duplex Printing on page 12-7.) Automatic Duplex Printing (For MFC-8820D and MFC-8820DN) In this mode, the MFC prints on both sides of the A4, Letter or Legal paper automatically. 1O pen the Properties dialog box in the printer driver. 2Select Duplex Printing mode in the Advanced t ab, make sure t hat ‘Use Duplex Unit’ has been selected, and then click the OK button. (See Duplex Printing on page 12-7.) The printer will print on bot h sides of the paper automatically. ■When you select Use Duplex Unit, HQ1200 is not available. ■If you also want to use Duplex Printing for fax and copy operations, see To use Automatic Duplexing for f ax, copy and print operations (For MFC-8820D and MFC-8820DN) on page 2-10.
