11 - 4 USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER Manual Duplex Printing The MFC prints all the even-numbered pages on one side of the paper first. Then, the Windows ® driver instruct s you (with a pop-up message) to reinsert the paper. Before reinserting the paper, straighten it well, or you may get a paper jam. Very t hin or very thick paper is not recommended. We recommend 75 t o 90 g/m 2 (20 to 24 lb) paper. Face-down output tray The MFC ejects paper with printed surfaces face down into the output tray in the front of the MFC. Unfold the support flap to support the printed pages. When printing transparencies, remove each one from the support flap after it exits the MFC. Support Flap with Extension
USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER 11 - 5 Printing on plain paper The manual feed tray (For MFC-8420) 1Select the Paper Size, Media Ty pe, Pap er So ur ce, and ot her settings in the printer driver. M edi a Ty pe: Plain Paper Paper Source: Manual 2Send the print data to the MFC. 3O pen the manual feed tray. Slide the paper guides to fit the paper size. 4Using both hands put paper in the manual feed t ray until the f ront edge of the paper touches the paper feed roller and t he MFC grips the paper. 5After the printed page comes out of the MFC, put in the next sheet of paper as in Step 4 above. Repeat for each page that you want to print. The MFC automat ically t urns on the Manual Feed mode when you put paper in the manual feed tray. ■Make sure that the paper is straight and in the proper position on the manual feed tray. I f it is not, the paper may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed print out or a paper ja m. ■Do not put more than one piece of paper in the manual feed tray at any one time, or it may cause a jam.
11 - 6 USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER The MP tray (For MFC-8820D and MFC-8820DN) 1Select the Paper Size, M edia Type, Paper Source, and other sett ings in the print er driver. Me dia Type: Plain Paper Paper Source: MP Tray 2Open the MP tray and lower it gently. 3Pull out the MP tray support flap. 4When loading paper in the MP tray, make sure it t ouches t he back of the tray. 5While pressing the paper-guide release lever, slide the paper guide to f it the paper size. 6Send the print dat a to the MFC. The MFC automatically turns on the MP Tray mode when you put paper in the multi-purpose tray. Make sure that the paper is st raight and in the proper position on the MP t ray. If it is not, t he paper may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed printout or a paper jam. When you put paper in the MP tray, please remember the following: ■The side to be printed on must be face up. ■During printing, the inside tray rises to feed paper into the MFC. ■Put the leading edge (top of the paper) in first and push it gently into t he tray. USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER 11 - 7 Printing on thicker paper and card stock When the back output tray is pulled down, the MFC has a straight paper path from the manual feed tray or t he MP tray through t o the back of the MFC. Use this paper feed and output method when you want to print on t hicker paper or card stock. M edi a Ty pe: Thick paper or Thicker paper Paper Source: Manual 2O pen the back output tray. 3O pen the manual feed tray. Repeat for each page that you want to print. 7When you have finished t he print job, close the back output tray. Caution Remove each sheet immediately after printing. Stacking the sheets may cause a paper jam or the paper to curl.

M edi a Ty pe: Thick paper or Thicker paper Paper Source: MP Tray 2O pen the back output tray, and then pull out the face-up out put t ray support if necessary. 3O pen the MP tray and lower it gently. 4Pull out the MP tray support flap. 5When put ting paper in the MP tray, make sure it touches the back of t he tray. 6While pressing the paper-guide release lever, slide the paper guide to fit the paper size. Make sure that the paper is straight and in the proper posit ion in t he MP tray. If it is not, the paper may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed printout or a paper jam. USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER 11 - 11 Printing on envelopes To print on envelopes use manual feed tray or multi-purpose tray. 1Select the Paper Size, Media Ty pe, Pap er So ur ce, and ot her settings in the printer driver. M edi a Ty pe: Envelope, Env.thin or Env.thick For MFC-8420: 2 Open t he back output tray. 3O pen the manual feed tray. Slide the paper guides to fit the envelope size. ■The MFC automat ically t urns on the Manual Feed mode when you put paper in the manual feed t ray. ■All sides should be properly folded without any wrinkles or creases. I f envelopes are creased af ter they have been printed: At the back of the MFC, open t he back output tray and push down the blue tabs at the left and right hand sides (as shown in t he figure on the next page). When you have finished printing your envelopes, close the back output tray to reset the t wo blue t abs back to their original position.
11 - 12 USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER 4Using both hands put the envelope in the manual feed tray until the front edge of the envelope touches the paper feed roller. Hold t he envelope in this position until the MFC automatically feeds it in for a short dist ance, and then let go of the envelope. ■Make sure the envelope is straight as you insert it in the manual feed tray. If it is not, the envelope may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed printout or a jam. ■Do not put more than one envelope in the manual feed tray at any one time, or it may cause a jam. ■Put the envelope in the manual feed tray, making sure that the side to be printed on is face up in the tray.
USING THE MFC AS A PRINTER 11 - 13 5After the printed envelope comes out of the MFC, the MFC will wait until you put in t he next envelope. Repeat Step 4 for each envelope you want to print. 6Send the print data to the MFC. 7After you finish the print job, close the back output tray. For MFC-8820D and MFC-8820DN: 2O pen the back output tray, and then unfold the face-up output t ray support if necessary. 3O pen the MP tray and lower it gently. 4Pull out the MP tray support flap. I f envelopes are creased af ter they have been printed: At the back of the MFC, open t he back output tray and push down the blue tabs at the left and right hand sides (as shown in t he figure on the next page). When you have finished printing your envelopes, close the back output tray to reset the t wo blue t abs back to their original position.
