    Condition Solution
    Loop bac k termination fails
with an error c od e of 1313. The sp an is still loop ed somewhere, p ossib ly at the
loop b ac k jac k, at the ICSU, or somewhere in the
    network.
The red LED on the loop b ac k
jac k is on. Rep lac e the ICSU, and re-run the test.
    Loop bac k termination still
fails.Replace the DS1 circ uit pack, and repeat the test
The DS1 c annot frame on the
inc oming sp an’s sig nal after
    the loopback jack power
down. There is something wrong with the rec eive sig nal into the
loop b ac k jac k from the d umb b loc k or the smart jac k.
The sp an failed the servic e
provider’s loopback test. The p rob lem is in the servic e p rovid er’s network.
    The servic e p rovider
suc c essfully loop tested the
sp an, up to the smart jac k.The wiring between the loop b ac k jac k and the smart jac k
is susp ec t. Test, and make rep airs, as need ed .
You c annot loc ate and rep air

Testing the DS1 Span from the Loopback Jack to
    the Smart Jack
Test the short leng th of c ustomer p remises wiring b etween the loopb ac k jac k and
the smart jac k (Sec tion 2 in the following 3 fig ures) using a loop b ac k that
overlaps this sec tion of the sp an.

You are resp onsib le for find ing and c orrec ting p rob lems in the c ustomer wiring
(sec tion 1 and the loop b ac k c ab le p ortion of sec tion 2). The DS1 servic e p rovid er
is resp onsib le for find ing and c orrec ting p rob lems in the majority of sec tion 2.
    Proc eed as follows.
    1. Test c ustomer p remises wiring from the ICSU to the loop b ac k jac k, as
d esc rib ed in the “ DS1 Sp an Test” sec tion.
    2. Test the loop b ac k jac k-to-dumb block and dumb block-to-CO wiring
    (sec tion 2 in Fi g u re 3 7
    ). This c an b e d one using a loop bac k that
“ overlap s” the sec tion of the sp an. Any of the following loop b ac ks c an d o

the CO end typ ic ally ac tivates, tests, and then d eac tivates.

    . Terminate this test b y entering test DS1-loop
    location end-loopback/span-test
. Bit error c ounts are examined
as desc rib ed in the “ DS1 Sp an Test” sec tion. This test only isolates
p rob lems to Sec tion 2 wiring if there are no p rob lems in the wiring
b etween the far-end CO and the far-end ICSU. Coord inate this test
with the DS1 servic e p rovid er.
Failure of any of the ab ove tests (a, b , or c ) ind ic ate a prob lem in
Section 2. This could mean bad loopback jack -to-”dumb” block
c ab ling, b ut is more likely to ind ic ate a p rob lem somewhere
b etween the “ d umb ” b loc k and the CO. This is the resp onsib ility of
    the DS1 service provider.
If the DS1 Sp an Test c onfirms that there are no p rob lems in Sec tion
1, the tec hnic ian should p roc eed as follows to avoid unnec essary
    dispatch.
    1. Id entify and c ontac t the DS1 servic e p rovid er.
    2. Inform the DS1 p rovid er that loop b ac k tests of the CPE
wiring to the “ d umb” b loc k (sec tion 1) showed no p rob lems.
    3. If the far-end ICSU line loop b ac k test failed, inform the DS1
    provider.
    4. Req uest that the DS1 p rovid er p erform a loopb ac k test of
their p ortion of the Sec tion 2 wiring b y send ing someone out
to loop Sec tion 2 b ac k to the CO at the “ d umb ” b loc k.
If this test fails, the p rob lem is in the servic e p rovid er’s
    wiring .
If the test p asses, the p rob lem is in the c ab le between the
    loop b ac k jac k and the “ d umb” b loc k. Rep lac e the loop b ac k
    jac k.
    Configurations Using Fiber Multiplexers
Use the loop b ac k jac k when c ustomer p remises DS1 wiring c onnec ts to an on-
site fib er multip lexer (MUX) and allows wiring to the network interfac e p oint on
the MUX to b e remotely tested . This req uires that ICSUs b e used on DS1 wiring
    to the MUX.
Fiber MUXs c an take the p lac e of Interfac e termination feed s as shown in Fi g u re
    34, Fi g u re 3 5, Fig ure 36, and Fi g u re 3 7. Test these sp ans using the same
p roc ed ures as metallic sp ans. Note the following p oints:
    1. Fiber MUXs may have loop b ac k c ap ab ilities that c an the servic e p rovid er
c an ac tivate from the CO end. These may loop the signal b ac k to the CO
or b ac k to the DS1 b oard . If the MUX p rovid es the eq uivalent of a line

loop b ac k on the “ p rob lem” DS1 fac ility, ac tivate it after a suc c essful
loop b ac k jac k test, and use it to isolate p rob lems to the wiring b etween
the loop b ac k jac k and the MUX.
    2. Be aware that there are installations that use rep eatered metallic lines
b etween the MUX and the “ d umb ” b loc k. These lines req uire DC power for
the rep eaters and this DC p ower is p resent at the “ d umb ” b loc k interfac e
to the CPE eq uip ment. A loopb ac k jac k is req uired in this c onfig uration to
p rop erly isolate and terminate the DC p ower.
To c hec k for the p resenc e of DC, make the following 4 measurements at the
    network interfac e jac k:
    1. From transmit tip (T, Pin 5) to rec eive tip (T1, Pin 2)
    2. From transmit ring (R, Pin 4) to rec eive ring (R1, Pin 4)
    3. From transmit tip (T, Pin 5) to transmit ring (R, Pin 4)
    4. From rec eive tip (T1, Pin 2) to rec eive ring (R1, Pin 4)
All measurements should read 0 (zero) volts DC. For p in numb ers and p in
designations, refer to Integ rated Channel Servic e Unit (ICSU) Installation and
    Operation.
    Operating Characteristics
If a TN464F or TN767E and a 120A2 were installed in a system running pre-
DEFINITY ECS, V3 software and the software is later up g rad ed to DEFINITY ECS,
V3 Release 3 or later, remove and re-install the DS1 c irc uit pac k so that the ICSU
ad ministration field s will ap p ear on the DS1 ad ministration sc reen.
