TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 12 - 18 Compatibility If you are having difficulty sending or receiving a fax due to possible interference on the phone line, we recommend that you adjust the Equalization for compatibility with your phone line. The MFC adjusts the modem speed for fax operations. 1Press Menu, 2, 0, 2. 2Press or to select Normal, Basic (or High). Press Set. 3Press Stop/Exit. Curl or waveCheck the paper type and quality. High temperatures and high humidity will cause paper to curl. If you do not use the printer very often, the paper may have been in the paper tray too long. Turn over the stack of paper in the paper tray. Also, try fanning the paper stack and then rotating the paper 180° in the paper tray. Try printing using the straight-through output path. (See How to load paper on page 2-3.) Wrinkles or creasesMake sure that paper is loaded properly. Check the paper type and quality. (See About paper on page 2-1.) 12 - 19 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Packing and shipping the MFC Whenever you transport the MFC, use the packing materials that came with your machine. If you do not pack the MFC correctly, you may void your warranty. 1Turn the MFC power switch off. 2Unplug the MFC from the telephone wall socket. 3Unplug the MFC from the AC outlet. 4Unplug the parallel and USB cable from the MFC, if it is connected. 5Open the front cover. 6Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. Leave the toner cartridge installed in the drum unit.

Fold down the face-down output tray flap. Remove the telephone line cord, ADF document output support and ADF document support, handset and handset curled cord. 9Wrap the MFC in the plastic bag and place it in the original carton with the original packing material.
12 - 21 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 10Pack the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly, telephone line cord, AC cord, handset, handset curled cord and printed materials in the original carton as shown below: 11Close the carton and tape it shut.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 12 - 22 Routine maintenance Cleaning the scanner 1Turn the MFC power switch off and unplug the MFC from the AC outlet. 2Lift the control panel cover. 3Clean the white bar and the glass cover. Moisten a small piece of clean soft, lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol and carefully remove dirt from the glass cover and the white bar of the scanner. 4Close the control panel cover. 12 - 23 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Cleaning the printer Caution ■Do not use isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt from the control panel. It may crack the panel. ■Do not use isopropyl alcohol to clean the laser scanner window. ■Do not touch the scanner window with your fingers. ■The drum unit contains toner, so handle it carefully. If toner scatters and your hands or clothes get dirty, immediately wipe or wash it off with cold water. 1Turn the MFC power switch off, unplug the MFC from the AC outlet and telephone cord and open the front cover. 2Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. WARNING Just after you have used the MFC, some internal parts of the machine are extremely HOT! When you open the front cover of the MFC, never touch the shaded parts shown in the diagram below. TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 12 - 24 3Gently clean the scanner window by wiping it with a clean soft dry cloth. Do not use isopropyl alcohol. Cleaning the drum unit We recommend placing the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a cloth or large disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering toner. 1Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left several times. 2Return the blue tab and snap it into the Home position (▼). 12 - 25 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE Caution If the blue tab is not at Home position (▼), printed pages may have vertical stripes. 3Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the MFC. (See Replacing the drum unit on page 12-30.) 4Close the front cover. 5Plug in the power cord first , then the telephone cord. Replacing the toner cartridge The MFC can print up to 6,700 pages using a high yield toner cartridge (TN-3060). When the toner cartridge is running low, the LCD shows Toner Low. The MFC is supplied with a standard toner cartridge (TN-3030) that must be replaced after approximately 3,500 pages. Actual page count will vary depending on your average type of original document (i.e., standard letter, detailed graphics). Discard the used toner cartridge according to local regulations, keeping it separate from domestic waste. Be sure to seal the toner cartridge tightly so toner powder does not spill out of the cartridge. If you have questions, call your local waste disposal office. We recommend that you clean the MFC when you replace the toner cartridge. It is a good idea to keep a new toner cartridge ready for use when you see the Toner Low warning.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 12 - 26 How to replace the toner cartridge WARNING Just after you use the MFC, some internal parts of the MFC will be extremely HOT! So, never touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. 1Open the front cover and pull out the drum unit. Caution ■Place the drum unit on a drop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering the toner. ■To prevent damage to the MFC from static electricity, do not touch the electrodes shown below. HOT!
12 - 27 TROUBLESHOOTING AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 2Hold down the lock lever on the right and pull the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Caution Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water. 3Unpack the new toner cartridge. Place the used toner cartridge into the aluminum bag and discard it according to local regulations. Caution ■Wait to unpack the toner cartridge until immediately before you install it in the MFC. If a toner cartridge is left unpacked for a long period of time, the toner life is shortened. ■Brother strongly recommends that you do not refill the toner cartridge provided with your MFC. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges (TN-3030 and TN-3060). Using or attempting to use potentially incompatible toner and/or toner cartridges in your MFC may cause damage to the machine itself and/or it may result in unsatisfactory print quality. Our warranty coverage does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of unauthorized third party toner and toner cartridges.
