AMIS Analog Networking 585-300-512 Issue 7 May 1999 AUDIX Administration 3-29 Implementation 3 l. Ad d ress rang es Ad minister the ad d ress rang es for the remote mac hines or individ ual remote telep hone numb ers ac c ord ing to the p lan you worked out inChap ter 2, Planning and Desig n. The total add ress rang e (p refix p lus extension) c an b e up to 24 c harac ters long. — Address prefix (optional): For the address prefixes you want sub sc rib ers to d ial, the first d ig it of the prefix field must matc h the AMIS p refix field (if you entered a p refix on the system:translation:analog network form). Ad d itionally, the p refix may c ontain a c ountry c od e and /or area c od e or the mnemonic for a remote loc ation (0 to 21 alphanumeric c harac ters may b e entered ). For examp le, if the AMIS p refix is “ 7” , the ad dress p refix c ould b e “ 7201” . Generally, p refixes are not rec ommend ed in a DCS network. Otherwise, ad d ress p refixes are rec ommend ed to help sub sc rib ers d isting uish among remote voic e mail systems (the ad d ress prefix is typed b y sub sc rib ers whenever they ad d ress an AMIS analog networking and /or messag e d elivery messag e). In ad d ition to the ad d ress rang es that sp ec ify the d ig its that sub sc rib ers must enter, the loc al system also req uires an ad d ress rang e that uniq uely id entifies the hunt g roup numb er (c allb ac k number) of the remote voic e mail system. If the remote mac hine has a different c ountry c od e, the ad d ress rang e must c ontain the c ountry c ode, area/trunk c od e, and hunt g roup. If the remote mac hine has a d ifferent area or trunk c od e, only the area/trunk c od e and hunt g roup are need ed (the c ountry c od e should b e omitted ). If the remote system is loc al, only the hunt g roup numb er should ap p ear for that mac hine. If the remote mac hine c an b e ac c essed throug h a p rivate network, the network-ac c ess code and hunt group for the remote machine should appear in the address prefix list instead. — Ad d ress extensions (req uired ): Enter the numb ers that d efine the mailb ox extensions that c an b e used on the remote system or the remote telep hone numb ers you want loc al sub sc rib ers to ac c ess in the start and end extension field s. Valid entries c an b e from 3 to 10 d ig its. Up to ten d ifferent rang es c an b e sp ec ified . The leng th of the start and end extensions must ag ree with the number shown in the ext leng th field (lead ing zeros may b e need ed to c onform to this req uirement). The end extension must b e eq ual to or g reater than the start extension. If you sp ec ify the same numb er as the starting and end ing extension, a uniq ue mac hine or telep hone numb er is sp ec ified (this is usually used to id entify the hunt g roup numb er of a remote mac hine).
AMIS Analog Networking 585-300-512 Issue 7 May 1999 AUDIX Administration 3-30 Implementation 3 AMIS ad d ress rang es and messag e d elivery ad d ress rang es must b e uniq ue; they c annot overlap with dig ital networking ad d ress rang es or other AMIS analog networking and /or messag e d elivery ad d ress rang es. See Chap ter 2, Planning and Desig n, for d etails. NOTE: The warning s field ind ic ates when a d up lic ate or overlap p ing range is being assigned. If you get a warning message, d isp lay the system:translation:address form to c hec k which extension numbers are in use, then refer to Chap ter 2, Planning and Design, to selec t ap prop riate rang es. m. For a new remote profile: When you have finished entering the d ial string , p ress (F2) to c reate and save the remote mac hine p rofile. Continue with the following field s. n. Messag e transmission schedule Enter the hours and minutes in the start and end field s to sp ec ify one or more c yc les (time period s) when the loc al system should attemp t to send messag es to this remote mac hine. Valid entries are times from 00:00 to 23:59. Up to three c yc les c an b e d efined for eac h remote system. Cyc les may b e assig ned to avoid toll fac ilities or period s of heavy traffic if d esired . The total time of the c yc les c annot exc eed 24 hours. Cyc les c annot overlap . A c yc le c an sp an ac ross mid nig ht. NOTE: The times sp ec ified must b e eq ual to or a sub set of the outc alling transmission times ad ministered on the system:outcalling form or the AMIS and /or message d elivery messages will never b e sent. For instance, if you schedule AMIS and message delivery messages to be sent anytime d uring a 24-hour p eriod (00:00 to 23:59), b ut outc alling period s are only sc hed uled from 07:00 to 18:00, the AMIS and messag e delivery messag es will only b e sent b etween the hours of 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The interval field s on this form are used for d ig ital networking only and do not ap p ly to AMIS analog networking or messag e d elivery; if intervals are sp ec ified here, they will b e ig nored . If all the outc alling p orts are busy, the system retries in one minute. If an outc alling p ort is availab le, b ut for some reason the system c annot d eliver the messag e, the system uses the resc heduling inc rements sp ec ified on the system:appearance form. ADD
AMIS Analog Networking 585-300-512 Issue 7 May 1999 AUDIX Administration 3-31 Implementation 3 AMIS messag e delivery is d one in p ac kets of 9 to satisfy the AMIS stand ard . Prior to R1V7 7:2, however, the system d id not immed iately resc hed ule any messag es still left in the q ueue for immed iate d elivery, b ut waited until the next transmission interval sc hed uled on the system:appearance form. On R1V7 7:2 and later systems, any messag es left in the queue are resc hed uled for immed iate d elivery after the first 9 are transmitted . The loc al AMIS system c alls the remote system ag ain within 2 minutes and transmits any add itional AMIS messag es it may have q ueued. o. Up d ates in/upd ates out These field s d o not app ly to AMIS analog networking or messag e d elivery (they are used for d ig ital networking only). p . Network turnaround (y/n)? This field d oes not ap p ly to AMIS analog networking or messag e d elivery and should b e set to “ n” (it is used for d ig ital networking only). q . Log c onnec t events (y/n)? This field was ad d ed in R1V7 7:2 software. It d oes not app ly to AMIS analog networking or messag e d elivery and should b e set to “ n” (it is used for dig ital networking only). r. Send to non-ad ministered rec ipients (y/n)? This field was moved to this form in R1V7; in AUDIX R1V6 software, it is on the system:appearance form. If this field is set to “ y” (the d efault), when a sub sc rib er ad dresses a messag e to a remote extension that d oes not map to an ad d ress known b y the loc al system, the loc al system ad ds this p otential sub sc rib er to its d ata b ase, then send s the messag e to every remote system in the network for whic h the add ress is valid. If a valid remote rec ip ient c annot b e found, the sub sc rib er rec ord is d eleted eventually by one of the system aud its and the loc al system changes the status of the message from und elivered to undeliverable in the sender’s outgoing voic e mailbox. For AMIS one-step systems and messag e d elivery: If this field is set to “ n” , sub sc rib ers c an only send messag es to ad ministered remote subsc rib ers. If a sub sc riber enters a valid extension or telep hone numb er (b ut one whic h has not b een ad ministered ), the sub sc rib er is notified that the entry is invalid .
AMIS Analog Networking 585-300-512 Issue 7 May 1999 AUDIX Administration 3-32 Implementation 3 For AMIS two-step systems: This field should b e set to “ y” b ec ause all remote sub sc rib ers on these systems are nonad ministered. However, setting the field to “ n” has no effec t on AUDIX R1 systems (messag es are still d elivered ). NOTE: Permitting sub sc rib ers to send messag es to nonad ministered rec ip ients may have a sig nific ant imp ac t on the network, c ausing extra or unnec essary c alls to other systems and load ing the loc al sub sc rib er d ata b ase with unneed ed rec ords. If the network is kep t up -to-d ate, c hang e this field to “ n” to reduce the system load. Often, messag es to nonad ministered rec ip ients simp ly ind ic ate a misd ialed numb er. 4. AMIS Analog Networking 585-300-512 Issue 7 May 1999 AUDIX Administration 3-36 Implementation 3 Task 12: Test the Connection This sec tion d esc rib es tests that c hec k the op eration of the AMIS Analog Networking and/or Messag e Delivery features. Use these tests as the final step in ad ministering the AMIS Analog Networking and /or Messag e Delivery features, or to troub leshoot a p rob lem with the network. NOTE: When you initially administer the AMIS Analog Networking, Message Delivery, and /or Outc alling features, a system restart is the b est way to ensure the system is up d ated c orrec tly. However, anytime you have troub le g etting the network to work, you may try restarting the system as d esc rib ed in Task 7 to see if that c orrec ts the p rob lem. Task 12A: Testing an AMIS Analog Connection You c an test the AMIS analog c onnec tion either b y send ing a test message to the d estination mac hine (see the sec tion for an examp le), or you c an use the AMIS loop b ac k test mailb oxes (if ad ministered ). 1. Contac t the system ad ministrator at the remote AMIS mac hine to: — Get the numb er of the remote AMIS loop b ac k test mailb ox (if one is ad ministered ), or an extension to send a test AMIS messag e to (if one is not). — Give the remote system ad ministrator the numb er of your AMIS loop b ac k test mailb ox, and request that he or she send you a test messag e. 2. From your own extension, log into the loc al system and c reate an AMIS message with the remote machine’s loopback test mailbox address (or the alternative test extension). Sc hed ule the messag e for immed iate d elivery. (If the remote system’s loop b ac k test mailb ox rec eives your test message, it will send a copy of your message back to your incoming mailbox as a new voic e mail messag e.) 3. Wait a few minutes, then c hec k your mailb ox: — If the messag e c ould not b e delivered , you will have a new voic e mail messag e notifying you that the messag e was und eliverab le. Ac c ess your outg oing mailb ox (p ress ) and p lay the undeliverable messag e head er to find out the reason the d elivery attemp t failed . Dep end ing on the error messag e, c orrec t the most likely p rob lem. Verify the intend ed rec ip ient’s ad d ress and ad ministration, then return to this sec tion to try another test. — If the loc al system c ould suc c essfully d eliver the messag e, the message status in your outgoing mailbox is updated to delivered. If the messag e has not yet b een d elivered (it is still und elivered), c hec k your mailb ox ag ain later to see if the status has b een updated to delivered. 4
AMIS Analog Networking 585-300-512 Issue 7 May 1999 AUDIX Administration 3-37 Implementation 3 4. If the remote system ad ministrator send s an AMIS messag e to the loc al loop b ac k test mailb ox on your system, the loc al system send s a c op y of the messag e to the inc oming mailb ox of the remote user to ind ic ate the message was rec eived. The loopback extension keeps a copy of the messag e head er in its outg oing mailb ox. Task 12B: Testing a Message Delivery Connection To test a c onnec tion for the Messag e Delivery feature, simp ly send a test messag e to the intended rec ip ient. If your telep hone numb er is in the same ad d ress rang e as the intend ed rec ip ient, you may alternatively send a test messag e to yourself. To test the Messag e Delivery feature: 1. From your own extension, log into the loc al AUDIX system and p ress to rec ord a messag e for the intend ed rec ip ient. When finished , p ress or (as promp ted ) to ap p rove it. 2. When the system p rompts you for the extension, enter the messag e d elivery p refix (if need ed), followed b y the c omp lete telep hone numb er need ed to reac h the rec ip ient, followed b y . 3. To ap prove the ad d ress and send the messag e immed iately (at the first ad ministered interval), p ress (on R1V8 systems only) or . 4. — If the loc al system c ould suc c essfully d ial the rec ip ient’s numb er, the messag e status in your outg oing mailb ox mig ht be delivered or ac c essed, d ep ending on whether the intend ed rec ipient has answered the c all. If the messag e has not yet been delivered (it is still und elivered), c hec k your mailb ox ag ain later to see if the status has been updated to ac c essed, indicating a succ essful message delivery. 1 # *# # ##**# 4
AMIS Analog Networking 585-300-512 Issue 7 May 1999 AUDIX Administration 3-38 Ongoing Administration 3 Ongoing Administration Ong oing AMIS analog networking and messag e delivery ad ministration and maintenanc e is summarized in this sec tion. Educate Subscribers A p rimary d uty of the system ad ministrator is to inform the sub sc rib er p op ulation of AMIS analog networking and messag e d elivery p refixes, valid mac hine numb ers to d ial, and so on. Up d ate and distrib ute the temp late letter for the AMIS Analog Networking and Messag e Delivery features that ap p ears in Chap ter C, Sub sc rib er Op eration Maintain the Network The system ad ministrator may need to d o p eriod ic ad ministration of the AMIS analog networking /messag e d elivery network as follows: nFor AMIS analog networking, ad d and d elete loc al and remote sub sc rib ers and mac hines as nec essary (see Tasks 8 throug h 11). These tasks d o not req uire a system restart. nFor message d elivery, ad d and delete remote telep hone numbers and sub sc rib ers as nec essary (see Tasks 8 throug h 11). These tasks do not require a system restart. nRead minister network p arameters if need ed (for examp le, if numerous remote ad ministered sub sc rib ers are ad d ed or if the Outc alling feature is ac tivated ). Any c hang es mad e in Task 3 require a system restart (see Task 7). nTroub leshoot any AMIS-related entries that ap p ear in the ad ministration log (an “ A” entry on the status line). Refer to Chap ter A, Administration Log Entries, for a summary of AMIS analog networking and messag e d elivery log entries, and the p rob lem-resolution step s for eac h. Monitor Logs and Traffic Reports The system administrator should display the administration log and traffic reports freq uently to verify g ood servic e, id entify p ossib le p rob lems, and ensure system sec urity. Refer to the ap p rop riate forms referenc e manual for a d esc rip tion of traffic rep orts and ind ivid ual field s on the traffic forms (see the Related Resourc es sec tion in the p refac e).
