Appendix A Page 243 Resetting your handheld Under normal circumstances, you will not have to use the reset button. On rare occasions, however, your handheld may no longer respond when you press buttons or tap the screen. In this case, you need to reset your handheld so that it will work again. Performing a soft reset A soft reset tells your handheld to stop what it’s doing and start over again. All records stored in your handheld are retained with a soft reset. Tip:The stylus that comes with your handheld has a reset tool inside. To use the tool, unscrew the top of the stylus. To perform a soft reset: nUse the reset tool, or the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or similar object without a sharp tip), to gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld. After a soft reset, the Welcome screen appears, followed by the General Preferences screen (to set time and date). Reset button
Page 244 Maintaining Your Handheld Performing a hard reset With a hard reset, all records stored in your handheld are erased. Never perform a hard reset unless a soft reset does not solve your problem. After performing a hard reset, you can transfer the data in Palm™ Desktop software to your handheld by performing a HotSync operation. To perform a hard reset: 1. Hold down the power button on the front panel of the handheld. 2. While holding down the power button, use the reset tip tool, or the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or similar object without a sharp tip), to gently press and release the reset button. 3. Wait for the Palm Computing ® Platform logo to appear; then release the power button. 4. When a message appears on the handheld screen warning that you are about to erase all the data stored on your handheld, do one of the following: Press the upper half of the scroll button on the front panel of the handheld to complete the hard reset and start Setup. Press any other button to perform a soft reset. Besides erasing all records, note these results of a hard reset: nThe current date and time are retained. nFormats Preferences and other settings are restored to their initial default settings. nPreloaded web clipping applications reappear on your handheld. Other add-on applications, however, are deleted from your handheld, so you need to re-install them. nIf you use a proxy server other than the Palm.Net proxy server, you must re-enter its IP address. See “Wireless preferences” in Chapter 8 for details. To restore your data after a hard reset: Important:Be sure to perform a HotSync operation before you use the Check & Send command in the iMessenger application. 1. Click the HotSync icon Ô in the Windows system tray (bottom- right corner of the taskbar).
Appendix A Page 245 2. From the HotSync Manager menu, choose Custom. 3. Select the appropriate user name from the list. 4. Select an application in the Conduit list. 5. Click Change. 6. Select Desktop overwrites handheld. Note:Changing the HotSync setting from the default affects only the next HotSync operation. Thereafter, the HotSync actions revert to their default settings. 7. Click OK. 8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to change conduit settings for other applications. 9. Click Done to activate your settings. 10. Perform a HotSync operation.

Disable any virus scanning software on your computer. 2. Press CTRL-ALT-DELETE and end all tasks except Systray and Explorer. 3. Make sure your computer has at least 20MB disk space. 4. Delete all temporary files. 5. Run ScanDisk on your computer. 6. Reinstall Palm Desktop software.
Appendix B Page 249 Operating problems ProblemSolution I don’t see anything on my handheld’s screen. Try each of these in turn: nAdjust the contrast control. See “Locating back panel components” in Chapter 1. nMake sure the batteries are installed properly. See “Installing the batteries” in Chapter 1. nReplace the batteries. If your handheld still does not operate, try a soft reset. See “Resetting your handheld” in Appendix A. nIf your handheld was exposed to cold, make sure it is at room temperature. I get a warning message telling me my handheld memory is full. nPurge the Date Book, To Do List, Mail, and iMessenger® applications. This removes records that you deleted from these applications from memory. See “Purging records” in Chapter 4. You may also need to perform a HotSync ® operation to recover the memory. nDelete unused memos and records. If necessary, you can save these records. See “Deleting records” in Chapter 4. nIf you have installed additional applications on your handheld, remove them to recover memory. See “Removing applications” in Chapter 3. My handheld keeps turning itself off.Your handheld is designed to turn itself off after a period of inactivity. This period can be set at 30 seconds, one, two, or three minutes. Check the Auto-off setting. See “General preferences” in Chapter 8. My handheld is not making any sounds.Check the System Sound setting. See “General preferences” in Chapter 8. Appendix B Page 251 Wireless problems ProblemSolution The signal strength is weak.nMake sure the antenna is pointing straight up, perpendicular to the ground: If you hold your handheld in your hand, raise the antenna to 135 °. If you lay it on a table or other surface parallel to the ground, raise the antenna to 90 °. Tap the Diagnostics icon . Then monitor the signal strength while you try the following solutions: nMove away from your original location, five to ten feet in any direction. nIf you are indoors, stand near a window, or move outdoors. nOpen metal blinds on windows. nIf you are in an underground parking lot or other space below street level, move to a location aboveground. nIf you are in a crowd, move to a less crowded area. nIf you’re in a vehicle, keep your handheld level with the windshield. The metal frame of the vehicle shields radio signals. Mountains and buildings may also block signals. nIf you’re outdoors, move away from overhead electrical wires. Move from under trees. Make sure the Set Date box in the General Preferences screen displays the current date. See “General preferences” in Chapter 8 for more information. I know I entered some records, but they do not appear in the application.nCheck the Categories pick list (upper- right corner). Choose All to display all of the records for the application. nCheck Security and confirm that Private Records is set to Show private records. nIn To Do List, tap Show and see if Show Only Due Items is selected. I am having problems listing memos the way I want to see them.nIf you cannot manually arrange the order of the memos in the list screen, check the Memo Preferences setting. Make sure that Sort by is set to Manual. nIf you choose to view your memos alphabetically on Palm Desktop software and then perform a HotSync operation, the memos on your handheld still appear in the order defined in the Memo Preferences setting. In other words, the sort settings you use with Palm Desktop software are not transferred to your handheld. I created an event in Date Book, but it doesn’t appear in the Week View.In the Week View, you cannot select overlapping events that have the same start time. If you have two or more events with the same start time, choose the Day View to see the overlapping events. I entered the euro symbol, but after a HotSync operation it doesn’t appear in my Palm Desktop software.You must have fonts that include the euro symbol on your desktop computer.
