Troubleshooting and Routine Maintenance165 B aPull the paper tray (1) completely out of the machine. bWipe the outside of the machine with a dry lint-free soft cloth to remove dust. cLift the output paper tray cover and remove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray. dWipe the paper tray with a dry lint-free soft cloth to remove dust. eClose the output paper tray cover and put the paper tray firmly back in the machine. Cleaning the scannerB aLift the document cover (1). Clean the scanner glass (2) and the white plastic (3) with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with a non-flammable glass cleaner. bIn the ADF unit, clean the white bar (1) and the glass strip (2) with a lint-free cloth moistened with a non-flammable glass cleaner. Note In addition to cleaning the scanner glass and glass strip with a non-flammable glass cleaner, run your finger tip over the glass to see if you can feel anything on it. If you feel dirt or debris, clean the glass again concentrating on that area. You may need to repeat the cleaning process three or four times. To test, make a copy after each cleaning attempt. 1 2 1 3 1 2
166 Cleaning the machine’s printer platenB CAUTION Be sure to unplug the machine from the AC power outlet before cleaning the printer platen (1) to avoid an electrical shock. aLift the scanner cover until it locks securely in the open position. bClean the machine’s printer platen (1) and the area around it, wiping off any scattered ink with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Cleaning the paper pick-up rollersB aPull the paper tray completely out of the machine. bUnplug the machine from the AC power outlet and open the Jam Clear Cover (1) at the back of the machine. cClean the Paper Pick-up Rollers (1) with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. dClose the Jam Clear Cover. Make sure the cover is closed properly. ePut the paper tray firmly back in the machine. fRe-connect the power cord. 1 1 1
Troubleshooting and Routine Maintenance167 B Cleaning the print headB To maintain good print quality, the machine will automatically clean the print head when needed. You can start the cleaning process manually if there is a print quality problem. Clean the print head and ink cartridges if you get a horizontal line in the text or graphics or blank text on your printed pages. You can clean Black only, three colors at a time (Cyan/Yellow/Magenta), or all four colors at once. Cleaning the print head consumes ink. Cleaning too often uses ink unnecessarily. IMPORTANT DO NOT touch the print head. Touching the print head may cause permanent damage and may void the print heads warranty. aPress . bPress Cleaning . cPress Black , Color or All . The machine cleans the print head. When cleaning is finished, the machine will go back to the Ready Screen automatically. Note If you clean the print head at least five times and the print has not improved, try installing a new Genuine Brother Innobella™ replacement cartridge for each problem color. Try cleaning the print head again up to five more times. If the print has not improved call Brother Customer Service. (See Brother numbers on page i.) Checking the print qualityB If faded or streaked colors and text appear on your output, some of the nozzles may be clogged. You can check this by printing the Print Quality Check Sheet and looking at the nozzle check pattern. aPress . bPress Test Print . cPress Print Quality . dPress Color Start . The machine begins printing the Print Quality Check Sheet. eCheck the quality of the four color blocks on the sheet. fThe LCD asks you if the print quality is OK. Do one of the following: „ If all lines are clear and visible, press Yes to finish the Print Quality check and go to step j. „ If you can see missing short lines as shown below, press No. gThe LCD asks you if the print quality is OK for black and three colors. Press Yes or No. hThe LCD asks you if you want to start cleaning. Press Color Start . The machine starts cleaning the print head. OK Poor
168 iAfter cleaning is finished, press Color Start. The machine starts printing the Print Quality Check Sheet again and then return to step e. jPress Stop/Exit . If you repeat this procedure at least five times and the print quality is still poor, replace the ink cartridge for the clogged color. After replacing the ink cartridge, check the print quality. If the problem still exists, repeat the cleaning and test print procedures at least five times for the new ink cartridge. If ink is still missing, call Brother Customer Service. (See Brother numbers on page i.) IMPORTANT DO NOT touch the print head. Touching the print head may cause permanent damage and may void the print heads warranty. Note Checking the print alignmentB You may need to adjust the print alignment after transporting the machine, or if your printed text becomes blurred or images become faded. aPress . bPress Test Print . cPress Alignment . dPress Black Start or Color Start . The machine starts printing the Alignment Check Sheet. eCheck the 600 dpi and 1200 dpi test prints to see if number 5 most closely matches number 0. fDo one of the following: „ If the number 5 samples of both the 600 dpi and 1200 dpi test prints are the best matches, press Yes to finish the Alignment Check and go to step i. „ If another test print number is a better match for either 600 dpi or 1200 dpi, press No to choose it. gFor 600 dpi, press the number of the test print that most closely matches the number 0 sample (1-8). hFor 1200 dpi, press the number of the test print that most closely matches the number 0 sample (1-8). iPress Stop/Exit . i When a print head nozzle is clogged the printed sample looks like this. After the print head nozzle is cleaned, the horizontal lines are gone.
Troubleshooting and Routine Maintenance169 B Checking the ink volumeB Although an ink volume icon appears on the LCD, you can use the ink menu to see a large graph showing the ink that is left in each cartridge. aPress . bPress Ink Volume . The LCD shows the ink volume. cPress Stop/Exit . Note You can check the ink volume from your computer. (See Printing for Windows ® or Printing and Faxing for Macintosh in the Software User’s Guide on the CD-ROM.) Uninstalling and installing the handset and handset cradleB If you do not use the handset you can remove the handset and handset cradle. Uninstalling the handset and handset cradle B aUnplug the curled handset cord from the machine. bPull the tab (1) back and hold it in position as you push the cradle (2) to the back of the machine. cAttach the side cover. 170 bAlign the recessed arrows on the cradle with those on the machine, and then slide the cradle toward the front of the machine until it clicks into place. cConnect the curled handset cord to the machine. Reset functionsB The following reset functions are available: 1Network You can reset the print server back to its default factory settings such as the IP address information. 2 Speed Dial&Fax Speed Dial & Fax resets the following settings: „ Speed Dial (Speed-Dial and Groups) „ Programmed fax jobs in the memory (Polled Transmit, Delayed Fax and Delayed Batch Transmission) „ Station ID (Name and Number) „ Remote Fax Options (Fax Forwarding and Paging) „ Report settings (Transmission Verification Report, Quick Dial List and Fax Journal) „ Message Center (OGM, ICM and Recorded Calls) „ Faxes in the memory

Brother strongly recommends you use this operation when you dispose of the machine. Note Unplug the interface cable before you choose Network or All Settings . How to reset the machineB aPress MENU. bPress a or b to display Initial Setup . cPress Initial Setup . dPress a or b to display Reset. ePress Reset . fPress the reset function you want to use. gPress Yes. hPress Yes for 2 seconds to confirm to reset. Packing and shipping the machine B When you transport the machine, use the packing materials that came with your machine. If you do not pack the machine properly, you may void your warranty. IMPORTANT It is important to allow the machine to ‘park’ the print head after a print job. Listen carefully to the machine before unplugging it to make sure that all mechanical noise has stopped. Not allowing the machine to finish this parking process may lead to print problems and possible damage to the print head. aOpen the ink cartridge cover. bPress the ink release lever to release the ink cartridge and take out the ink cartridges. (See Replacing the ink cartridges on page 162.) cInstall the green protective part and then close the ink cartridge cover.
172 IMPORTANT • Make sure that the plastic tabs on both sides of the green protective part (1) have securely clicked into place (2). • If you are not able to find the green protective part, DO NOT remove the ink cartridges before shipping. It is essential that the machine be shipped with either the green protective part or the ink cartridges in position. Shipping without them will cause damage to your machine and may void your warranty. dLift the machine from the front and hook the tab of the green protective part into the keyed opening (1) on the bottom of the paper tray. Then latch the protective part over the raised portion of the paper tray (2). eUnplug the machine from the telephone wall jack and take the telephone line cord out of the machine. fUnplug the machine from the AC power outlet. gUsing both hands, use the plastic tabs on both sides of the machine to lift the scanner cover until it locks securely into the open position. Then unplug the interface cable from the machine, if it is connected. 1 2 1 2

Gently push the scanner cover support down ( ) and close the scanner cover ( ) using both hands. iWrap the machine in the bag. jPack the machine and the printed materials in the original carton with the original packing material as shown in the illustration. Do not pack the used ink cartridges in the carton. Note If you are returning your machine to Brother as part of the Exchange Service, pack only the machine. Keep all separate parts and printed materials to use with your ‘Exchange’ machine. kClose the carton and tape it shut. 1 23
174 C On-screen programming C Your machine is designed to be easy to operate with LCD on-screen programming using the menu buttons on the Touchscreen. User-friendly programming helps you take full advantage of all the menu selections your machine has to offer. Since your programming is done on the LCD, we have created step-by-step on-screen instructions to help you program your machine. All you need to do is follow the instructions as they guide you through the menu selections and programming options. Menu tableC You can program your machine by using the Menu table that begins on page 175. These pages list the menu selections and options. Memory storageC Even if there is a power failure, you will not lose the settings you have chosen using the Menu key because they are stored permanently. Also, you will not lose your settings in the PhotoCapture, Fax and Copy mode key menus if you have chosen Set New Default. IMPORTANT During a power failure the machine will retain messages that are in the memory for approximately 24 hours. Mode and menu keysC Menu and FeaturesC Access the main menu.
