Setting up the printer on a Windows operating system 1Before you unpack the printer or attach anything, locate the CD for Windows. 2Make sure the computer is on, and then insert the CD for Windows. Wait several seconds for the install screen to appear. Note: If the install screen does not appear automatically, click Start Œ Run, and then type D:\setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. 3Follow the instructions on the computer screen to set up the printer. Your security software may notify you that Lexmark software is trying to communicate with your computer system. Always allow these programs to communicate. This is necessary for the printer to work properly. Installing the optional Tray 2 You can purchase and install an optional Tray 2 to increase the paper loading capacity of the printer. 1 2 1Tray 2 base 2Tray 2 Note: Decide on a location to set the Tray 2 base. The printer will be placed on top of it, so allow enough space. 1Make sure the printer is turned off and disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 2Remove Tray 2 from its packaging. 3Remove any packaging tape from the base and tray. 4Grasp the printer by its handholds to lift it. 5Align the printer above the base. 6Set the printer on top of the base. Getting the printer ready to fax CAUTION—SHOCK HAZARD: Do not use the fax feature during a lightning storm. Do not set up this product or make any electrical or cabling connections, such as the power supply cord or telephone, during a lightning storm. Choosing a fax connection You can connect the printer with equipment such as a telephone, an answering machine, or a computer modem. If problems occur, see the topics listed under “Setup troubleshooting” in the “Troubleshooting” chapter. Notes: The printer is an analog device that works best when directly connected to the wall jack. Other devices (such as a telephone or answering machine) can be successfully attached to pass through the printer, as described in the setup steps. If you want a digital connection such as ISDN, DSL, or ADSL, a third-party device (such as a DSL filter) is required. For more information, see “Using a digital phone service” on page 39. You do not need to attach the printer to a computer, but you do need to connect it to a telephone line to send and receive faxes. You can connect the printer to other equipment. See the following table to determine the best way to set up the printer. Connecting directly to a telephone wall jack in Germany Connect the printer directly to a telephone wall jack to send and receive faxes without using a computer. 1Make sure you have a telephone cord (provided with the product) and a telephone wall jack. 2Connect one end of the telephone cord into the LINE port of the printer. 3Connect the other end of the telephone cord into the N slot of an active telephone wall jack. 4If you would like to use the same line for both fax and telephone communication, connect a second telephone line (not provided) between the telephone and the F slot of an active telephone wall jack.
