If you believe you purchased a new, genuine Lexmark print cartridge, but the Out of Original Lexmark Ink message appears: 1Click Learn More on the message. 2Click Report a non-Lexmark print cartridge. To prevent the message from appearing again for the indicated cartridge(s): Replace your cartridge(s) with new Lexmark print cartridge(s). If you are printing from a computer, click Learn more on the message, select the check box, and click Close. If you are using the printer without a computer, press Cancel. Lexmark's warranty does not cover damage caused by non-Lexmark ink or print cartridges. Improving print quality If you are not satisfied with the print quality of a document, make sure you: Use the appropriate paper for the document. If you are printing photos or other high quality images, for best results use Lexmark Perfectfinish Photo Paper or Lexmark Photo Paper. Use a paper that is a heavier weight or bright white. Select a higher print quality. If the document still does not have the print quality you want, follow these steps: 1Align the print cartridges. For more information, see “Aligning print cartridges” on page 181. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 2. 2Clean the print cartridge nozzles. For more information, see “Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles” on page 182. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 3. 3Remove and reinsert the cartridges. For more information, see “Removing a used print cartridge” on page 180 and “Installing print cartridges” on page 178. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 4. 4Wipe the print cartridge nozzles and contacts. For more information, see “Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts” on page 182. If print quality is still not satisfactory, replace the cartridge. For more information, see “Ordering paper and other supplies” on page 185. If you aligned the cartridges to improve print quality, print your document again. If print quality has not improved, clean the print cartridge nozzles. Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles 1Load plain paper. 2Press or repeatedly until Maintenance is highlighted. 3Press . 4Press or repeatedly until Clean Cartridges is highlighted. 5Press . A page prints, forcing ink through the print cartridge nozzles to clean them. 6Print the document again to verify that the print quality has improved. 7If print quality has not improved, try cleaning the nozzles up to two more times. Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts 1Remove the print cartridges. 2Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water, and place the cloth on a flat surface. 3Gently hold the nozzles against the cloth for about three seconds, and then wipe in the direction shown. 4Using another clean section of the cloth, gently hold the cloth against the contacts for about three seconds, and then wipe in the direction shown. 5With another clean section of the cloth, repeat step 3 and step 4. 6Let the nozzles and contacts dry completely. 7Reinsert the print cartridges. 8Print the document again. 9If the print quality does not improve, clean the print nozzles. For more information, see “Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles” on page 182. 10Repeat step 9 up to two more times. 11If print quality is still not satisfactory, replace the print cartridges. Preserving the print cartridges Keep a new cartridge in its packaging until you are ready to install it. It should be stored with the package hang tab up, as it hangs or sits on the shelf in the store. Do not remove a cartridge from the printer except to replace, clean, or store it in an airtight container. The cartridges do not print correctly if left exposed for an extended period of time. Keep the photo cartridge in its own storage unit when not in use. The stored photo cartridge should be stored upright, as shown below. Removing the printer from the Tray 2 base If you need to move the printer to a different location, be sure you first remove the printer from the Tray 2 base. This helps to avoid damaging the printer and the base. To safely move the printer and the optional Tray 2, follow these precautions: Keep the printer in an upright position. Avoid severe jarring movements that may cause damage to the printer and the tray. 1Turn the printer off, and disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 2Disconnect all cables from the back of the printer. 3Remove any paper from Tray 1 and the paper exit tray. 4Grasp the printer on both sides using the handholds. 5Lift the printer off of the Tray 2 base, and set the printer aside. Cleaning the scanner glass 1Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. 2Gently wipe the scanner glass clean. Note: Make sure all ink or corrective fluid on a document is dry before placing the document on the scanner glass. Cleaning the exterior of the printer 1Make sure that the printer is turned off and unplugged from the wall outlet. CAUTION—SHOCK HAZARD: To avoid the risk of electric shock, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and disconnect all cables to the printer before proceeding. 2Remove paper from the paper tray or trays. 3Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. 4Wipe only the outside of the printer, making sure to remove any ink residue that has accumulated on the paper exit tray. Warning—Potential Damage: Using a damp cloth to clean the interior may cause damage to your printer. 5Make sure the paper tray and paper exit tray are dry before beginning a new print job. Troubleshooting If you set up your printer on a wireless network, make sure: The wireless network is working properly. The computer and printer are both connected to the same wireless network. The printer is within the range of the wireless network. The effective range for optimal performance is generally 100–150 feet. The printer is located away from other electronic devices that may interfere with the wireless signal. The power supply is connected to the printer, and is lit. The Wi-Fi indicator light is green. The printer driver is installed on the computer from which you are performing a task. The correct printer port is selected. Setup troubleshooting Incorrect language appears on the display Selecting a language during initial setup 1Press or repeatedly until the language you want appears on the display. 2Press . DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT THE POWER CORD 1Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet, and then from the printer. 2Plug the cord all the way into the power supply on the printer. 12 3Plug the cord into a properly grounded electrical outlet that other electrical devices have been using. 4If the light is not on, press . Software does not install These are possible solutions. Try one or more of the following: CHECK YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM The following operating systems are supported: Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Mac OS X versions 10.34 and 10.4 (not versions 10.0, 10.1, or 10.2). Note: Windows 2000 users should use Service Pack 3 or later. CHECK YOUR SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Check that your computer meets the minimum system requirements listed on the printer box. CHECK USB CONNECTION 1Check the USB cable for any obvious damage. 2Firmly plug the square end of the USB cable into the back of the printer. 3Firmly plug the rectangular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the computer. REINSTALL THE SOFTWARE 1Turn off and then restart your computer. 2Click Cancel on all New Hardware Found screens. 3Insert the CD, and then follow the instructions on the computer screen to reinstall the software. RECONNECT POWER SUPPLY 1Press to turn the printer off. 2Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 3Gently remove the power supply from the printer. 4Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. 6Press to turn the printer on. DISABLE ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMS 1Close all open software applications. 2Disable any antivirus programs. 3Double-click the My Computer icon. In Windows XP, click Start to access the My Computer icon. 4Double-click the CD–ROM drive icon. 5If necessary, double-click setup.exe. 6Follow the instructions on the computer screen to install the software. UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL SOFTWARE Uninstall the printer software, and then reinstall it. For more information, see “Removing and reinstalling the software” on page 191. CHECK CARTRIDGES 1Remove the print cartridges. 2Make sure the sticker and tape have been removed. 12 3Reinsert the cartridges. CHECK PRINTER DEFAULT AND PAUSE SETTINGS 1Do one of the following: In Windows Vista, click ŒControl Panel. In Windows XP, click Start. 2Click Printers Œ Printers and Faxes. 3Double-click the printer queue device. 4Click Printer. Make sure no check mark appears next to Pause Printing. If a check mark does not appear next to Set As Default Printer, you must select the print queue device for each file you want to print. RECONNECT POWER SUPPLY 1Press to turn the printer off. 2Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. 3Gently remove the power supply from the printer. 4Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. 6Press to turn the printer on.
