Loading paper and documents21 2 Loading documents2 You can send a fax, make copies, and scan from the ADF (automatic document feeder) and from the scanner glass. Using the ADF2 The ADF can hold up to 15 pages and feeds each sheet individually. Use standard 80 gsm paper and always fan the pages before putting them in the ADF. Recommended environment2 Document Sizes Supported2 How to load documents2 CAUTION DO NOT pull on the document while it is feeding. DO NOT use paper that is curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, paper clipped, pasted or taped. DO NOT use cardboard, newspaper or fabric with the ADF. Instead use the scanner glass. „Make sure documents are completely dry. aUnfold the ADF Document Output Support Flap (1). bFan the pages well. cAdjust the paper guides to fit the width of your documents. dPlace your documents, face down, top edge first in the ADF until you feel them touch the feed roller. CAUTION DO NOT leave thick documents on the scanner glass. If you do this, the ADF may jam. Using the scanner glass2 You can use the scanner glass to fax, copy or scan pages of a book one page at a time. Chapter 2 22 How to load documents2 Note To use the scanner glass, the ADF must be empty. aLift the document cover. bUsing the document guidelines on the left and top, put the document face down in the upper left corner of the scanner glass. cClose the document cover. CAUTION If you are scanning a book or thick document, DO NOT slam the cover down or press on it. Scannable area2 The scannable area depends on the settings in the application you are using. The figures below show the areas you cannot scan on paper. 23 3 3 Power Save mode3 You can put the machine into Power Save mode by pressing the Power Save key. You can still receive telephone calls in Power Save mode (MFC-790CW only). For further information on receiving faxes in the Power Save condition, please see the table on page 24. The delayed faxes that have been set up will be sent. You can even retrieve faxes using Remote Retrieval if you are away from your machine. If you want to do other operations, you must take the machine out of Power Save mode. Note If you have connected an external telephone or TAD, it is always available. Putting your machine in Power Save mode3 aPress the Power Save key. The LCD will tell you that you cannot use the phone once it is switched off. Press Yes. The LCD shows Shutting Down and will stay on for a few seconds before going off. Bringing your machine out of Power Save mode3 aPress the Power Save key. The LCD shows the date and time. Note • Even if you have put the machine into Power Save mode, it will periodically clean the print head to preserve print quality. • If you unplug the AC power cord, no machine operations will be available. • You can customize Power Save mode so that, apart from automatic head cleaning, no machine operations are available. (See Power Save setting on page 23.) Power Save setting3 You can customize the machines Power Save key. The factory setting is Fax Receive:On . Your machine can receive faxes (or calls for MFC-790CW only) even when the machine is in Power Save mode. General setup25 3 Mode Timer3 The machine has four temporary mode keys on the control panel: Fax, Scan , Copy and Photo Capture . You can change the amount of time the machine takes after the last Scan, Copy or PhotoCapture operation before it returns to Fax mode. When you use transparencies or glossy paper, remove each sheet at once to prevent smudging or paper jams.
Chapter 3 26 Paper Size3 You can use five sizes of paper for copying: Letter, Legal, A4, A5 and 10 ×15 cm (4 ×6 in.) and three sizes for printing faxes: Letter, Legal and A4. General setup27 3 Beeper Volume3 When the beeper is on, the machine will beep when you press a key, make a mistake or after you send or receive a fax. Note • You can adjust the speaker volume while you are listening to your outgoing message (OGM) and incoming messages (ICM’s) by pressing d or c. • If you turn Incoming Recording Monitor to OFF the Speaker for screening calls will be disabled and you won’t hear callers leaving messages. The volume for other operations can still be controlled using dor c.
Chapter 3 28 Setting Daylight Savings Time 3 You can set the machine to change for daylight savings time. It will reset itself forward one hour in the Spring and backward one hour in the Autumn. Sleep Mode3 You can choose how long the machine must be idle (from 1 to 60 minutes) before it goes into sleep mode.
