    							Selecting Manual Feed
    Manual feed is available only when the optional Rear Feed Unit is installed
    on the printer.
    1Click [On Line] until the On Line indicator is no longer lit.
    2Click [Menu].
    PCL (or PS) PRINT MENU appears on the first line of the printer display.
    3Click [Item] until MANUAL FEED appears on the second line of the printer
    display.
    4Click [+] to select MANUAL FEED=ON.
    5Click [Enter] to save your selection.
    An asterisk (*) appears to the right of your selection.
    6Click [On Line] to return the printer on line.
    7If 10 PRESS RESET TO ACTIVATE appears on the printer display and you want
    your changes activated immediately, click [Reset].
    Resetting the printer at this point activates your selection and clears the
    page buffer. The printer automatically returns on line after the printer is
    reset.
    8If you did not reset the printer, click [On Line] to return the printer on line.
    The On Line indicator lights. Changes to the control panel will not take
    effect until all data in the page buffer prints.

    							Selecting an Output Bin
    1Click [On Line] until the On Line indicator is no longer lit.
    2Click [Menu].
    PCL (or PS) PRINT MENU appears on the first line of the printer display.
    3Click [Item] until OUT BIN appears on the second line of the display.
    4Click [+] to select your output bin.
    UPPER - refers to the face down, correct order output bin.
    LOWER - refers to the face up, reverse order output bin.
    5Click [Enter] to save your selection.
    An asterisk (*) appears to the right of your selection.
    6If you selected the face up output bin, make sure it is open to catch the
    media.

    							7Click [On Line] to return the printer on line.

    							Switching Printer Personalities
    The SYS selection is only available when a second personality, such as the
    PostScript language, is installed on the printer.
    1Click [On Line] until the On Line indicator is no longer lit.
    2Click [Menu] twice.
    PCL or PS CONFIG MENU appears on the first line of the printer display.
    3Click [Item] until SYS appears on the second line of the display.
    4Click [+] to make your selection.
    AUTO - enables switching by file type or PJL description.
    PCL - selects PCL as the printer personality.
    POSTSCRIPT - selects the PostScript language as the printer personality.
    POSTSCRIPT is only available if the PostScript option is installed on the
    printer.
    5Click [Enter] to save your selection.
    An asterisk (*) appears to the right of your selection.
    6Click [Reset].
    Resetting the printer activates your selection as the new default. SWITCHING
    TO POSTSCRIPT (or PCL) appears on the printer display. Then the printer
    automatically returns on line with 00 POSTSCRIPT READY (or 00 PCL READY)
    on the printer display. Any downloaded fonts or macros will be deleted when
    the printer switches between personalities.

    							Setting the I/O Timeout
    1Click [On Line] until the On Line indicator is no longer lit.
    2Click [Menu] twice.
    PCL or PS CONFIG MENU appears on the first line of the printer display.
    3Click [Item] until I/O TIMEOUT is displayed on the second line of the display.
    4Click [+] to set the timeout between 5 and 300 seconds.
    Click [-] to view the previous value. Press and hold [+] or [-] to scroll through
    the possible values for timeout. The default is 15 seconds.
    5Click [Enter] to save your selection.
    An asterisk (*) appears to the right of your selection.
    6Click [On Line] to return the printer on line.
    The On Line indicator lights.
    I/O Timeout sets the number of seconds that the printer waits to receive
    additional characters from your computer before determining a job boundary.
    Setting I/O timeout too high may cause a single I/O port to remain active and
    not allow data from other ports to be printed. Setting I/O timeout too low may
    result in missing characters, out of order print jobs, or other print problems.

    							Setting the Power Save Mode
    1Click [On Line] until the On Line indicator is no longer lit.
    2Click [Menu] twice.
    PCL or PS CONFIG MENU appears on the first line of the printer display.
    3Click [Item] until PWRSAVE is displayed on the second line of the display.
    4Click [+] to set the time between 15 minutes (15MIN) and 3 hours (3HRS), or
    OFF.
    Click [-] to view the previous value. Press and hold [+] or [-] to scroll through
    the possible values for power save mode. The default is 60 minutes (60MIN).
    5Click [Enter] to save your selection.

    6Click [On Line] to return the printer on line.
    The On Line indicator lights.
    The adjustable power save qualifies the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M printer for
    the U.S. Environmental Protection agency Energy Star program for printers.
    PWRSAVE reduces power consumption when the printer is not in use. The
    printer display will dim when the printer enters the power save mode.

    							Running Printer Self Tests
    1Click [On Line] until the On Line indicator is no longer lit.
    2Click [Menu] until PCL or PS TEST MENU appears on the first line of the
    printer display.
    The prefix PCL or PS depends on whether PCL or PostScript (PS) is selected.
    3Click [Item] until the self test you want appears on the second line of the
    display.
    PCL or PS SELF TEST
    CONT SELF TEST (PCL only)
    PCL or PS TYPEFACE LIST
    PCL or PS DEMO PAGE
    DEVELOPER TEST
    The prefix PCL or PS (PostScript) depends on the current control panel
    setting (00 PCL READY or 00 POSTSCRIPT READY).
    4Click [Enter] to run the self test.
    The self test is performed and the test page is printed.
    5If you selected CONT SELF TEST, click [On Line] to exit the test and return the
    printer on line or click [Reset] to stop testing and remain off line  This
    command will print Self Tests continuously until you click [On Line] or
    [Reset].
    6If you selected a self test other than CONT SELF TEST, click [On Line] to return
    the printer on line after the test is complete.

    							Interpreting the PCL test page
    Item Description
    1
    PCL Print Menu. Shows the current Print Menu selections in the order they appear on the printer display.
    2PCL Config Menu. Shows the current Configuration Menu selections in the order they appear on the printer
    display, except for I/O settings.
    3Parallel Menu. Shows the current Bi-Tronics parallel settings in the order they appear on the printer display.
    4Maintenance Counters. Shows the percentage of maximum rated life already used for each maintenance unit in
    the printer. 
    5MIO Configuration. Shows the current MIO description and configuration when an MIO card is installed in the
    printer. There may also be additional diagnostic information printed here.
    6RAM size. Shows the total amount of installed printer memory, including added optional memory. If you install
    additional memory, a self test can be used to verify proper installation. Black and Color Page Count. Shows
    approximately how many black and color pages have been printed. Page count can be used to track printer usage.
    7Serial Number. Shows the printer serial number.
    8Options. Verifies the installation of font cartridges, paper trays, and installed options.
    9“Ripple Print” Pattern. Checks print density and quality.
    10REt Pattern.

    							Interpreting the PostScript test page
    Item Description
    1
    PS Print Menu. Shows the current PostScript Print Menu selections in the order they appear on the printer display.
    2PS Config Menu. Shows the current PostScript Configuration Menu selections in the order they appear on the
    printer display, except for I/O settings.
    3Parallel Menu. Shows the current Bi-Tronics parallel settings in the order they appear on the printer display.

    7MIO Configuration. Shows the current MIO description and configuration when an MIO card is installed in the
    printer. There may also be additional diagnostic information printed here.
    8Memory. The total memory installed in the printer and the PostScript settings which affect how memory is used.
    9REt Pattern.
