    Maintaining Your Printer
    Introduction
This chapter explains how to optimize your printer performance by cleaning
your printer and replacing maintenance units.
The following topics are discussed in this chapter:
    ·Making room for maintenance
    ·Cleaning the printer
    ·Identifying and replacing maintenance units
For proper printer operation, perform the cleaning procedures at specified
intervals using only Hewlett-Packard maintenance units. Part numbers for
these units are listed on the
Part Number Quick Reference Card at the back
    of this manual.
Do not attempt to solve printer problems by switching maintenance units
between printers or randomly installing new maintenance units. These units
may be calibrated for specific printers or may be installed only once. For
information on solving printer problems, see Chapter 7.

    							Making Room for Printer Maintenance
The following figure lists the space required around the printer for
    maintenance.
·Sufficient space is required on the sides of the printer for removing
    maintenance units (A).
·Sufficient space is required behind the printer to fully open the toner
reservoir cover, top cover, and to clear paper jams when the rear feed unit is
    installed (B).
·The work area for the printer must adequately support the weight of the
printer (102 pounds/46.6 kg) and its accessories.

    							Regular Maintenance Procedures
Overall print quality will depend largely on
keeping certain critical components of your
printer clean. Your Color LaserJet 5/5M
printer components are sensitive to build-up
of dust or toner particles. Some of the more
sensitive printer components need to be
cleaned regularly to ensure the highest
    possible print quality (approximately every
2,000 pages). The following procedure will
    clean these three components.
    · ·Optics Glass
    · ·Drum Corona
    · ·Transfer Corona
    Caution
Remove all jewelry and watches before
continuing. The drum can be easily
    scratched, causing damage.
Do not expose the print drum to direct light
for extended periods of time. Exposure to light
    can permanently damage the drum.
1Press the top cover release button and
    open the top cover.
2Pull the drum lock lever at the left edge of
    the drum toward you.
3Lower the drum until it is horizontal.

4Find the laser optics cleaning tool.
5Insert the cleaning tool above the drum
with the padded portion towards the glass
(A). Press the pad on the cleaning tool
firmly against the right end of the optics
glass; slide it to the left end of the optics
glass and back to the right. Return the
cleaning tool to its storage place.
6Locate the drum cleaning handle towards
the back right corner of the main drum.

the drum and back to the right. Repeat
    twice.
8Raise the drum until it locks into place.
9Locate the corona cleaning knob located
between the transfer belt and the fuser on
the right side of the printer.
    Caution
Do not touch the transfer belt surface. Oil
from your hands and debris can reduce the
life span of the belt and affect print quality.
10Slide the cleaning knob to the left end of
the printer and back. Repeat twice.
    Close the top cover.
    Caution
Before closing the printer, be sure the drum
corona cleaning handle and transfer corona
cleaning knob are seated in the full right
    position.

    							Cleaning the Toner Reservoir Area
Clean the toner reservoir area when you add
toner. Add toner only when the control panel
    requests.
1Push the optional rear feed unit away
from the printer. Then open the toner
reservoir cover and use the cover to hold
the rear feed unit back away from the
    printer.
2With the cleaning cloth from the toner
collection kit, wipe off any dust or toner
on the area between the individual toner
    doors.
    Caution
Do not drop excess toner into the manual feed
area. Toner in the manual feed area can
    result in manual feed problems.
    3Close the toner reservoir cover.
Return the optional rear feed unit to its
upright position against the back of the
    printer.
    Note
A cleaning cloth is included with each toner
collection kit. The part number for the toner
collection kit is listed in Appendix A.

    							Performing Printer Maintenance
This section lists the schedule for replacing maintenance units on this
printer. The printer prompts you when it is time to replace each unit. The
following table lists the approximate time intervals for replacing
maintenance units and the printer messages that prompt you to replace
    them.
The time period listed assumes you are printing 2000 pages per month. If
your print quantities differ, adjust the time period accordingly. Part
numbers for each unit are listed on the Part Number Quick Reference Card
at the back of this manual. For proper printer operation, use only
    Hewlett-Packard maintenance units.
