							5Locate the black developer in the printer
(2).

and pull it one-third of the way out.
7Supporting the developer from the
bottom, pull the developer out of the
printer horizontally and set it aside.
Remember to dispose of it responsibly.

							Caution
Do not remove the clear plastic strip from the
developer. The clear plastic strip must remain
on the developer for proper operation.
9Remove the foam packaging from the new
developer.
10Remove the packaging tape and foam
from the center and both ends of the new
developer.
11Pull the plastic strip to remove the clip
and foam spacer.
12Holding the plastic end of the developer,
pull the plastic loop to remove the
remaining packaging.

							13Shake the developer from top to bottom
with the handle end down, then from side
to side several times to distribute toner.
Caution
For proper operation, keep the new developer
horizontal during installation.
14Supporting the new developer from the
bottom, align it with the printer, then
slide the developer two-thirds of the way
in.
15Slide the developer the rest of the way
into the printer until the release lever
clicks into place.
16Close the side cover.
If the side cover does not close properly,
make sure the developer is correctly
installed.

							17Close the top cover, then plug in the
printer.
18Turn the printer ON (button in).
19When the printer displays PRESS ON LINE
TO CONTINUE, click [On Line].
20The printer goes through a brief developer
setup sequence (3 minutes), then returns
on line.

							Replacing the Color Developer
Replace the color developer when the message
19.2 COLOR DEVEL USER MAINTENANCE appears
on the printer display. Print quality will
degrade until the unit is replaced. To verify
the life remaining on other maintenance
units, print a self test page.
Note
Use only maintenance units designed and
labeled for the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M
printer. Other maintenance units may
damage your printer or result in inferior print
quality.
1Turn the printer off (button out).
2When the fan turns off (5 minutes),
unplug the printer.
3Press the top cover release button, then
open the top cover.
4Open the left side cover of the printer by
grasping its bottom edge and lifting it up.

side of the developer.
10Pull the plastic strip (1) to remove the
three clips and foam spacer.
11Pull the plastic loop (2) to remove the 4
plastic strips.
12Holding the plastic end of the developer,
pull the plastic loop (3) to remove the 3
plastic strips.
