    							Replacing the Drum  
    Replace the drum when the message 19.3
    DRUM USER MAINTENANCE appears on the
    printer display. Print quality will degrade
    until the unit is replaced. To verify the life
    remaining on other maintenance units, print
    a self test page.
    Note
    Use only maintenance units designed and
    labeled for the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M
    printer. Other maintenance units may
    damage your printer or result in inferior print
    quality.
    1Turn the printer off (button out).
    2When the fan turns off (5 minutes),
    unplug the printer.
    3Press the top cover release button, then
    open the top cover.
    4Locate the drum lock lever at the left edge
    of the drum, then pull it toward you.

    							5Lower the drum until it is horizontal (1),
    then remove the drum from the printer (2).
    Caution
    To prevent drum damage, do not remove the
    black drum cover from the new drum until the
    drum is installed in the printer.
    6Remove the new drum from its packaging.
    7Remove the packing spacer.

    							8Align the new drum with the printer (A),
    then install the drum in the printer.
    9Raise the drum until it locks in place.
    10Write down the number on the upper
    right corner of the drum for later
    reference (A).

    							11Remove the tape from the drum cover,
    then grasp the two tabs and pull the cover
    out toward you. Set the cover aside and
    remember to dispose of it responsibly.
    Caution
    Do not expose the print drum to direct light
    for extended periods of time. Exposure to light
    can permanently damage the drum.
    12Close the top cover.
    13Plug in the printer.
    14Turn the printer ON (button in).

    							15When the printer displays NEW DRUM
    INST. DRUM NUMBER=000, click [+] to enter
    the number recorded in step 10.
    Click [-] to view the previous value. Press
    and hold [+] or [-] to scroll through the
    possible drum numbers.
    Caution
    For maximum print quality, make sure you
    enter the correct number for the print drum.
    16Click [Enter] to save the number.
    17When the printer displays PLEASE VERIFY
    DRUM NUMBER=000, re-enter the drum
    number, then click [Enter].
    If the numbers entered in steps 15 and 17
    are not the same, the printer will repeat
    step 17. Otherwise, the printer will go
    through a brief self test sequence, then
    return on line with 00 PCL READY (or 00
    POSTSCRIPT READY) on the printer display.

    							Replacing the Fuser
    Replace the fuser when the message 19.4
    FUSER USER MAINTENANCE appears on the
    printer display. To verify the life remaining
    on other maintenance units, print a self test
    page.
    Note
    Use only maintenance units designed and
    labeled for the HP Color LaserJet 5/5M
    printer. Other maintenance units may
    damage your printer or result in inferior print
    quality.
    Caution
    Decreased printer reliability and damage to
    the printer may occur if the fuser is not
    replaced when the message 19.4 FUSER USER
    MAINTENANCE appears on the printer display.
    1Turn the printer off (button out).
    WARNING!
    With the top cover closed, wait 30 minutes to
    let the fuser cool down before replacing the
    fuser. Continuing before the fuser has cooled
    down may result in severe burns.
    2Unplug the printer.
    3Press the top cover release button, then
    open the top cover.
    4Locate the fuser (A) and the two captive
    screws (B) holding it in place.

    							5Loosen the two captive screws.
    6Grasp the fuser with both hands and lift it
    up and out of the printer. Then set it aside
    for responsible disposal.
    7Remove the new fuser from its packaging.
    8Keeping the new fuser horizontal install it
    in the printer.

    							9Press down on both sides of the fuser to
    install it firmly in place.
    10Tighten the two captive screws on the
    fuser.
    11Close the top cover of the printer.

    							12Plug in the printer.
    13Turn the printer ON (button in).
    The printer goes through a brief self test
    sequence, then returns on line with 00
    PCL (or POSTSCRIPT) READY on the printer
    display.

    							Replacing the Transfer Belt
    Replace the transfer belt when the message
    19.5 TRANS BELT USER MAINTENANCE appears
    on the printer display. Print quality will
    degrade until the unit is replaced. To verify
    the life remaining on other maintenance
    units, print a self test page.
