Controlling Your Printer ·Select printer settings through your software application or printer driver. The best and easiest way to control your printer is through your software application. Changing these settings will affect only your print job. Most software applications allow you to choose printing selections from menus within the software application. These selections override the selections on the printer control panel. ·Select printer settings with the control panel. You can also control your printer through the keys and menus of the printer control panel. Changing these settings will affect all print jobs. If you are sharing the printer, other users may want to check, and possibly change, the settings on the control panel before each printing task. See Chapter 5 “Using the Control Panel,” for information on using the control panel. Remember, software settings always override control panel settings. ·Enter printer commands directly into files. Some software applications allow you to enter printer commands (escape sequences) directly into your files. However, this method of controlling your printer requires you to learn printer commands. For information on printer commands, see the PCL Technical Reference for this printer. 1 Your Printer ENYour Color LaserJet 5/5M Printer 1-5
Color Support and Printer Speeds The approximate printer speeds and color support offered by this printer are listed below. See Appendix B for media specifications. Printer speeds may vary because: ·Complex graphics or large graphics may require additional time to download to the printer. ·Downloading time is dependent on your I/O configuration, the type of computer you are using, the amount of printer memory installed, the network operating system you are using, and how your network is configured. ·If memory problems result from printing complex graphics, you can free up printer memory by removing downloaded fonts, style sheets, macros, and forms from printer memory. Adding additional memory should resolve memory problems, but will not increase printer speed. Your printer comes with 20 MB standard memory in the HP Color LaserJet 5, and 32 MB in the HP Color LaserJet 5M, which should be sufficient for most print jobs. If required, memory can be expanded up to 96 MB for the HP Color LaserJet 5 and 92 MB for the HP Color LaserJet 5M. Approximate Print Speeds · Letter, A4, Executive (Paper) ·10 ppm black or monochrome ·2 ppm color ·Legal (Paper) ·7 ppm black (color not available) ·11 x 17 (Paper) ·6 ppm (color not available) ·Transparencies and Glossy Paper ·1 ppm (black, monochrome, and color) CautionDo not feed envelopes in this printer. NoteColor printing is available for Letter, A4, and Executive paper sizes. 1-6 Your Color LaserJet 5/5M PrinterEN
2 Common Printing Tasks Introduction This chapter contains specific procedures to accomplish the following tasks: ·Selecting paper and other print media ·Loading media in the input trays ·Changing media type and size ·Printing from an input tray ·Printing using manual feed ·Printing transparencies ·Printing on letterhead ·Changing print direction on a page ENCommon Printing Tasks 2-1
Selecting Paper and Other Print Media ·Use only print media that meet the guidelines outlined in this chapter or in Appendix B. ·Before purchasing large quantities of print media or specialized forms, test a small quantity with your printer. Make sure your supplier obtains and understands the paper and print media requirements specified in the paper specification guide for this product. Do not attempt to print non-supported sizes or weights of paper or other media. CautionUsing print media sizes and weights that are not supported by this printer may increase the incidence of paper jams, cause premature wear, cause print quality problems, contribute to repair and maintenance costs, and cause problems requiring service. This service may not be covered by the Hewlett-Packard warranty or service agreements. ·Use only supported transparencies and glossy paper (see Appendix B for specifications). ·Always handle transparencies by their edges to avoid finger prints in the image area. ·Do not attempt to print envelopes with this printer. ·Do not refeed paper that has already passed through the printer or through a copy machine. CautionTo prevent printer damage, do not feed envelopes from the input trays or manual feed slot. Envelopes are not supported in this printer. ·Recycled paper may be used with this printer. Recycled paper must meet HP specifications as noted in this chapter and Appendix B. 2-2 Common Printing TasksEN
Supported Media ·The following table lists the size and type of media supported by each input tray. ·The media size for each front input tray is labeled on the front right corner of the tray. ·The printer can detect the size of media in the installed input trays. ·The printer automatically detects and prints transparencies at a slower rate (1 ppm). ·For complete media specifications, see Appendix B. Loading Media in the Front Input Tray 1Firmly grip the center of the input tray and pull it out of the printer. Make sure the face up output bin is closed before before removing the input tray. 2Remove the cover from the input tray, lift the warning flap, then press down on the media lift plate until it locks in place. 3If you are loading letter, A4, or executive size media, slide the media under the metal tabs from the front of the tray with the long edge of the media toward the back of the tray. Media size is labeled on the front right corner of the input tray. Each tray holds up to 250 sheets of paper or 50 transparencies. Caution Do not overfill input trays. Excessive media in input trays can cause media jams in the printer. Do not feed envelopes in this printer. à à 2-4 Common Printing TasksEN
