Chapter 10 272 Options For the List of options, refer to the Setup Manual . Upgrade options The following upgrade options and consumables are available for the KX-PS8100 from your local Panasonic reseller: • Hard Disk Drive (KX-PDHD1) for storing print jobs, and additional fonts (page 275) • 32 MB (KX-PEMD2) or 64 MB (KX-PEMD3) SDRAM DIMMs (page 278) Three DIMM slots are available on the printer controller board. Each slot can support a 16 MB, 32 MB or 64 MB SDRAM DIMM. NOTE: • A minimum of 48 MB of SDRAM is required for duplicating. • Ethernet (KX-PNBC5) or Token Ring (KX-PNBC6) card (page 281) You must remove the printer controller board from the back of the KX-PS8100 printer in order to install or replace the hard disk, add or replace memory, or install a Token Ring or Ethernet card. IMPORTANT: • To prevent static electricity damage to any of the following components, touch a grounded metal surface, such as the printer’s bare metal frame prior to touching the component. — The interface connectors; SCSI, parallel, and optional network — ADF interface connector — Electrical components, connectors inside the printer, any components on the optional board (hard disk drive, SDRAM DIMMs, Ethernet network card, or Token Ring network card) — The connector pins on the optional 2nd cassette feeder for the printer
Options Removing and replacing the printer controller board To remove the printer controller board: 1Turn the printer OFF, unplug the power cord and disconnect any cables connected to the connectors on the back of the printer. 2Loosen the two screws that secure the printer controller board to the back of the printer, using a cross-point head (+) screwdriver. 3Carefully pull the printer controller board out of its slot in the printer. For instructions on installing printer options see: •“Installing a hard disk drive” on page 275 •“Installing additional memory” on page 278 •“Installing network cards” on page 281 Printer controller board
Options To replace the printer controller board: 1Align the printer controller board with the groove on the back of the printer and carefully slide it back inside the printer. 2Tighten the two screws on the printer controller board that you loosened earlier, using a cross-point head (+) screwdriver. 3Plug in the power cord and reconnect any cables to the back of the printer. 275 Options Installing a hard disk drive The following section explains how to install the hard disk drive on the printer. It also describes how to initialize the new hard disk drive for use from the printer panel. To install the hard disk drive you will need to remove the printer controller board, install the drive and then replace the printer controller board in the printer. For instructions, see “Removing and replacing the printer controller board” on page 273. IMPORTANT: •To prevent static electricity damage to certain components (see page 272), touch a grounded metal surface, such as the printer’s bare metal frame prior to touching the component. CAUTIONS: •Do not drop or bend the hard disk drive. •Do not touch the hard disk drive connector and electrical circuit board. •Protect the hard disk drive from static electricity by keeping it in its anti- static package until you are ready to install it. •Avoid exposing the hard disk drive to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or humidity. 276 Options To install a new hard disk drive: 1Place the printer controller board on a stable surface. 2Unpack the new hard disk drive. With the electrical circuit board side up, place the drive on a flat surface or on the palm of your hand. Do not touch the drive with magnetic objects or place objects sensitive to magnets near the drive. 3Screw the four stand offs in the back of the hard disk drive. 4Insert the provided cable into the connector on the hard disk drive in the direction shown in the figure. Please note the direction of the color line of the cable. Hard disk drive Cable Projection Color line for first pin
Options 5Insert the other end of the cable into the connector on the printer controller board, directing a projection on the cable against the groove in the connector. Slide the cable until the click is heard. 6Put the four stand offs of the hard disk drive into the four holes, and secure the hard disk drive on the printer controller board with four screws. 7Stick the label provided to the hard disk drive. 8Replace the printer controller board in the printer. For instructions, see “Removing and replacing the printer controller board” on page 273. Projection
Options After you install the hard disk and power on the printer, you may be prompted to initialize the new hard disk drive. If so, follow the directions below: 1 From Ready or Ready(Sleep) , press the MENU/EXIT button to enter the Setup menus. 2 Press the s /CONTINUE button until “ Hard Disk ” appears. Follow the instructions on the printer LCD panel. Installing additional memory The following section explains how to install a 32 or 64 MB SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module) on the KX-PS8100. To install the SDRAM DIMM (illustrated below) you will need to do the following: • Remove the printer controller board from the back of the printer. • Install a 32 or 64 MB SDRAM DIMM in either of the empty SDRAM slot on the printer controller board. • Replace the printer controller board. IMPORTANT: • To prevent static electricity damage to certain components (see page 272), touch a grounded metal surface, such as the printer’s bare metal frame prior to touching the component. • SDRAM DIMM CAUTIONS: • Do not drop or bend the SDRAM DIMM. • Do not touch the connector edge of the SDRAM DIMM. • Protect the SDRAM DIMM from static electricity by keeping it in its anti- static package until you are ready to install it. • Avoid exposing the SDRAM DIMM to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or humidity. 279 Options The printer controller board ships with the following memory configuration: • The DIMM slot numbered J1, is reserved for the printer’s system software ROM DIMM. • The DIMM slots numbered J8, J2 and J3 are reversed for SDRAM DIMMs. Install a SDRAM DIMM in the empty slot to increase the memory of your printer. Additional SDRAM DIMMs may be used for your printer in 32 or 64 MB configurations, allowing your printer a maximum memory configuration of 192 MB of SDRAM. To install a SDRAM DIMM you will need to remove the printer controller board, install the SDRAM DIMM, then replace the controller board in the printer. For instructions, see “Removing and replacing the printer controller board” on page 273.
