µ On diesel models On vehicles with i-SHIFT Connect the second jumper cable to thenegative( )terminalonthe booster battery. Connect the other end to the stud bolt on the engine side as shown. Do not connect this jumper cable to any other part of the engine. If the booster battery is in another vehicle, have an assistant start that vehicle and run it at a fast idle. Start the vehicle. If the starter motor still operates slowly, check that the jumper cables have good metal-to-metal contact.Once the vehicle is running, disconnect the negative cable f rom your vehicle, then f rom the booster battery. Disconnect the positive cable f rom your vehicle, and then from the booster battery. Keep the ends of the jumper cables away from each other and any metal on the vehicle until everything is disconnected. Otherwise, you may cause an electrical short. Af ter jump starting, you must move the shift lever to neutral and press on the brake pedal f or about 3 seconds until the gear position indicator shows N the next time you turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position. 5. 6.7. If there was no coolant in the reserve tank, you may need to add coolant to the radiator. Let the engine cool down until the pointer reaches the middle of the temperature gauge, or lower, bef ore checking the radiator. Using gloves or a large heavy cloth, turn the radiator cap anticlockwise, without pushing down, to the f irst stop. Af ter the pressure releases, push down on the cap, and turn it until it comes off. If you don’t f ind an obvious leak, check the coolant level in the radiator reserve tank (see page ).Start the engine, and set the temperature control dial to maximum heat (climate control to AUTO at ‘‘ ’’). Add coolant to the radiator up to the base of the f iller neck. If you do not have the proper coolant mixture available, you can add plain water. Look f or any obvious coolant leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Everything is still extremely hot, so use caution. If you f ind a leak, it must be repaired bef ore you continue driving (see on page ). If you don’t f ind an obvious leak, check the coolant level in the expansion tank (see page ).Start the engine and set the temperature control dial to maximum heat (climate control to AUTO at ‘‘ ’’). Add coolant up to the MAX line on the expansion tank. If you do not have the proper coolant mixture available, you can add plain water. Start the engine, and watch the oil pressure indicator. If it does not go out within 10 seconds, turn of f the engine. There is a mechanical problem that needs to be repaired bef ore you can continue driving (see on page ). Running the engine with low oil pressure can cause serious mechanical damage almost immediately. Turn of f the engine as soon as you can safely get the vehicle stopped. Saf ely pull of f the road, and shut of f the engine. Turn on the hazard warning indicators. Let the vehicle sit f or a minute. Open the bonnet, and check the oil level (see page ). An engine very low on oil can lose pressure during cornering and other driving manoeuvres. If necessary, add oil to bring the level back to the full mark on the dipstick (see page on petrol models, and page on diesel models). This indicator should come on when the ignition switch is in the ON (II) position, and go out af ter the engine starts. It should never come on when the engine is running. If it starts f lashing or stays on, the oil pressure has dropped very low or lost pressure. Serious engine damage is possible and you should take immediate action. You will also see the symbol ‘‘ ,’’ or this symbol with an ‘‘OIL PRESSURE LOW’’ message on the multi-inf ormation display (see page ).1. 2.4. 3. 106578 374 461459 T aking Care of t he Unexpect ed L ow Oil Pressure Indicator Emergency T owing 563 09/01/28 18:48:13 32SMG631_568
Your vehicle has an engine oil level sensor to check the oil level. If the symbol ‘‘ ’’ f or the oil level indicator comes on on the multi- inf ormation display when the engine is running, the engine oil level is low. You will also hear a beep when this symbol comes on. If you select the warning symbol with the message(s) in the customizing settings, you will see this symbol with a ‘‘CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL’’ message on the multi-information display (seepage ). The oil level symbol/message display can be reset each time you turn of f the engine. When you start your trip again, the system begins to monitor the engine oil level. It may take a while until the system senses the engine oil level is low and the symbol, or the symbol with a message appear on the multi- inf ormation display. You should check the engine oil level and add engine oil bef ore driving again if the oil level symbol, or the symbol with a ‘‘CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL’’ message comes on. If this symbol comes on, saf ely pull off the road, park the vehicle on level ground, turn of f the engine and let the vehicle sit f or approximately 3 minutes. Do not f ill above the upper mark on the dipstick and do not spill the engine oil in the engine compartment. This could damage the engine and other components. If you do not carry spare engine oil in your vehicle, drive moderately to the nearest service area and add engine oil. Avoid f ull-throttle acceleration and driving at high speed. Check the oil level. If the engine oil level is near or below the lower mark on the dipstick, you should add the engine oil (see page on petrol models, and page on diesel models).105 459 461 Oil L evel Indicator T aking Care of t he Unexpect ed564 OIL LEVEL INDICATOR 09/01/28 18:48:21 32SMG631_569
This indicator should come on when the ignition switch is in the ON (II) position, and go out af ter the engine starts. If the charging system indicator comes on brightly when the engine is running, the battery is not being charged. You will also see the symbol ‘‘ ,’’ or this symbol with a ‘‘CHECK SYSTEM’’ message on the multi-information display (see page ). Immediately turn of f all electrical accessories. Try not to use other electrically operated controls such as the power windows. Keep the engine running; starting the engine will discharge the battery rapidly. Go to a dealer or a service station where you can get technical assistance. This system activates after the engine warms up. If the outside temperature is extremely low, you mayhavetodriveforalongtime until the system senses the engine oil level. If the symbol ‘‘ ,’’ or this symbol with a ‘‘CHECK SYSTEM’’ message appears on the multi-inf ormation display when the engine is running, there is a system problem in the engine oil level sensor. You will also hear a beep. Have your dealer inspect your vehicle as soon as possible. If you ignore the oil level symbol/ message and keep driving with this symbol/message on, you can seriously damage the engine. 107 T aking Care of t he Unexpect ed Oil L evel Indicator, Charging System Indicator Charging System Indicator Oil L evel Sensor Failure 565 09/01/28 18:48:30 32SMG631_570
