µ As required by E.C.E Regulation No. 94;If the passenger’s f ront airbag inflates, it can hit the rearward f acing child restraint system with great f orce. The rearward f acing child restraint system can be dislodged or struck with enough f orce to cause very serious injury to the infant. If the vehicle seat is too f ar f orward, or the child’s head is thrown f orward during a collision, an inf lating f ront airbag can strike the child with enough f orce to kill or very seriously injure a small child.Whenever possible, larger children should sit in the back seat, on a booster seat if needed, and be properly restrained with a seat belt (see page f or important inf ormation about protecting larger children). In all cases observe the legal requirements of the countries in which you will drive.61 Small ChildrenL arger Children Placing a f ront f acing child rest raint syst em in t he f ront seat of a vehicle equipped wit h a passenger’s f ront airbag can be hazardous.Children who have outgrown child rest raint syst ems are also at risk of being injured or killed by an inf lat ing passenger’s f ront airbag. µ As required by E.C.E Regulation No. 94;To remind you of the passenger’s f ront airbag hazards, and that children must be properly restrained in a back seat, your vehicle has warning labels on the windscreen, on the f ront passenger’s doorjamb and on the f ront visors. Please read and f ollow the instructions on these labels. Protecting Children General Guidelines Driver and Passenger Saf ety37 DO NOT place rear-facing child seat on this seat with airbag. µ Side airbags have been designed to help protect adults in a moderate to severe side impact. If any part of a child’s body is in the path of a deploying airbag, an inf lating side airbag can strike the child with enough f orce to kill or very seriously injure a child. To remind you of the side airbags hazards, and that children must be properly restrained in the back seat, your vehicle has the safety label on each f ront doorjamb. µ Many parents say they pref er to put an inf ant or a small child in the f ront passenger seat so they can watch the child, or because the child requires attention. Placing a child in the f ront seat exposes the child to hazards in a f rontal collision or a side impact, and paying close attention to a child distracts the driver f rom the important tasks of driving, placing both of you at risk. If a child requires close physical attention or f requent visual contact, we strongly recommend that another adult ride with the child in the back seat. The back seat is far safer for a child than the front. Your vehicle has a back seat where children can be properly restrained. If you ever have to carry a group of children, and a child must ride in front: Place the largest child in the f ront seat, provided the child is large enough to wear the lap/shoulder belt properly (see page ). Move the vehicle seat as far to the rear as possible (see page ). Have the child sit upright and well backintheseat(seepage ). Make sure the seat belt is properly positioned and secured (see page ).If you are not wearing a seat belt in a crash, you could be thrown f orward and crush the child against the dashboard or a seat-back. If you are wearing a seat belt, the child can be torn from your arms and be seriously hurt or killed. During a crash, the belt could press deep into the child and cause serious or fatal injuries. If they do, they couldbeveryseriouslyinjuredina crash. 19 1761 165 CONT INUED If You Must Drive with Several ChildrenIf a Child Requires Close AttentionAdditional Saf ety Precautions Neverholdaninfantorchildon your lap. µ Even very young children learn how to unlock vehicle doors, turn on the ignition switch, and open the tailgate, which can lead to accidental injury or death. ‘‘Never let children kneel on seats or stand while the vehicle is in motion. The violent f orces created during emergency braking will cause the childrentobethrownforward. The children could be seriously injured or killed.’’ Children who play in vehicles can accidentally get trapped inside. Teach your children not to play in or around vehicles. For example, infants and small childrenleftinavehicleonahot day can die f rom heatstroke. A child lef t alone with the key in the ignition switch can accidentally set the vehicle in motion, possibly injuring themselves or others.Leaving children without adult supervision is illegal in some countries, and can be very hazardous. If a child wraps a loose seat belt around their neck, they can be seriously or f atally injured. (See pages and for how to activate and deactivate the lockable retractor.) This can prevent children f rom accidentally f alling out (see page ).56 53 158 Always take the ignition key with you whenever you leave the vehicle alone (with other occupants). Use the main power window switch to prevent children f rom opening the windows. Using this f eature will prevent children f rom playing with the windows, which could expose them to hazards or distract the driver (see page ).175K eep vehicle keys/remot e transmitters out of the reach of children. Lock all doors and the tailgate when your vehicle is not in use. Do not leave children alone in a vehicle. If equipped wit h t he lockable ret ract or, make sure any unused seat belt t hat a child can reach is buckled, t he lockable ret ract or is activated, and the belt is f ully retracted and locked. An inf ant must be properly restrained in a rear-f acing, reclining child restraint system until the child reaches the restraint system maker’s weight or height limit f or the restraint system, and the child is at least one year old.A rearward f acing child restraint systemcanbeplacedinanyseating position in the back seat, but not in the front. For EU countries, an approved rearward f acing child restraint system should be placed in any seatingpositioninthebackseat(see page ). If the passenger’s f ront airbag inflates, it can hit the back of the restraint with enough f orce to kill or seriously injure an inf ant. Only a rearward f acing child restraint system provides proper support f or a baby’s head, neck and back. Two types of restraints may be used: a restraint system designed exclusively f or inf ants, or a convertible restraint system used in the rearward f acing, reclining mode. For EU countries, ref er to page f or the recommended child restraint system. As required by E.C.E Regulation No. 94;When properly installed, a rearward f acing child restraint system may prevent the driver or a f ront passenger f rom moving their seat as f ar back as recommended, or f rom locking their seat-back in the desired position. In either situation, we strongly recommend that you install the child restraint system directly behind the f ront passenger seat, move the seat as far forward as needed, and leave it unoccupied. Or you may wish to get a smaller rearward f acing child restraint system. If the passenger’s f ront airbag inflates, it can hit the rearward f acing child restraint system with great f orce. The rearward f acing child restraint system can be dislodged or struck with enough f orce to cause very serious injury to the infant. Protecting Inf ants and Small Children Driver and Passenger Saf ety42 DO NOT place rear-facing child seat on this seat with airbag. DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY can occur. Placing a rearward facing child restraint system in the front seat can result in serious injury or death if the passenger’s front airbag inflates. A child who is at least one year old, and who fits within the child restraint system maker’s weight and height limits, should be restrained in a f ront f acing, upright child restraint system. Of the dif f erent restraint systems available, we recommend those that have a f ive-point harness system as shown. We also recommend that a small child uses the child restraint system as long as possible, until the child reaches the weight or height limit f or the restraint system. For EU countries, ref er to page f or the recommended child restraint system. We strongly recommend placing a f ront f acing child restraint system in a back seat, not the front. If the vehicle seat is too far forward, or the child’s head is thrown f orward during a collision, an inf lating airbag can strike the child with enough f orce to cause very serious or f atal injuries. If it is necessary to put a f ront f acing child restraint system in the f ront, move the vehicle seat as far to the rear as possible, and be sure the child restraint system is f irmly secured to the vehicle and the child is properly strapped in the restraint system. 47 Protecting Small Children Child Rest raint Syst em T ypeChild Rest raint Syst em Placement Placing a f ront f acing child rest raint syst em in t he f ront seat of a vehicle equipped wit h a passenger’s airbag can be hazardous. If you must place a front facing child restraint system in front, move the vehicle seat as far back as possible, and properly restrain the child. 09/01/28 17:37:46 32SMG631_048
In most countries, child restraint systems must meet the specif ications of the ECE 44 regulation. Look f or the approval mark on the system and the manufacturer’s statement of compliance on the box. Whatever type of child restraint you choose, to provide proper protection, a child restraint system should meet three requirements: The manufacturer of the vehicle does not assume any responsibility for damage which would be caused by a def ect inherent in the recommended child restraint system. When buying a child restraint system, you need to choose either a conventional child restraint system, or one designed f or use with the lower anchorages and tethers. Conventional child restraint systems must be secured to a vehicle with a seat belt, whereas lower anchorages system-compatible child restraint systems are secured by attaching the restraint to hardware built into the two outer seating positions in the back seat. Since lower anchorages system- compatible child restraint systems are easier to install and reduce the possibility of improper installation, if your vehicle is equipped with the lower anchorages system, we recommend selecting this style. We also recommend selecting a lower anchorages system-compatible child restraint system with a rigid, rather than a f lexible, anchor (see page ). In EU countries, a child restraint system with a f lexible anchor is not available. In seating positions and vehicles not equipped with lower anchorages, a lower anchorages system-compatible child restraint system can be installed using a seat belt.49 T he child restraint system should meet saf et y st andards. 1.
