    							1 - 34 ABOUT THIS PRINTER
    HL7050_US_UG_FM5.5
Most envelopes will be suitable for your printer. However, some
envelopes will have feed and print-quality problems because of the
way they have been made. A suitable envelope should have edges
with straight, well-creased folds and the leading edge should not be
thicker than two pieces of paper. The envelope should lie flat and not
be of baggy or flimsy construction. You should buy quality envelopes
from a supplier who understands that you will be using the envelopes
in a laser printer. Before you print a lot of envelopes, test one to
make sure that the print results are what you want.
■During printing, the inside tray rises to feed paper into the
    printer.
■If envelopes get smudged during printing, in the printer
driver select MP Tray as the Paper Source for a straight
paper path. Then, set the Media Type to Thick Paper or
Thicker Paper to increase the fixing temperature. To adjust
the print density setting, see Chapter 3.
■Envelope joints that are sealed by the manufacturer should
    be secure.
■All sides should be properly folded without any wrinkles or
    creases.
Brother will not recommend a particular envelope because
envelope manufacturers may change the envelope
specifications. You are responsible for the quality and
    performance of envelopes you use.

Printing on labels, transparencies and other
    special paper
Types of special paper to avoid
■Do not use paper that is damaged, curled, wrinkled or an unusual
    shape.
    Figure 1-25
Before using paper that has holes in it, such as organizer
sheets, you must fan the stack to avoid paper jams and
    misfeeds.
    Figure 1-26
■Do not use paper with perforations (holes) at the edges.
■Do not put the punched holes near the actuator (paper
    sensor).
■Do not use organizer sheets that are stuck together. The
glue that is used might damage the printer.
■Do not load different types of paper at the same time in the
paper tray because it may cause paper jams or misfeeds.
■For proper printing, you must choose the same paper size
from your software application as the paper in the tray.
■If your application software does not allow you to select the
paper size in its Print menu, you can use the control panel
Menu buttons to go to the PAPER menu to change the
paper size. For more information, see Chapter 3.

    WARNING
Do not touch transparencies that have just been printed because
    they will be very hot!
Make sure that the paper is neatly stacked and in the proper
position on the multi-purpose tray. If it is not, the paper may
not be fed correctly, resulting in a skewed printout or a paper
    jam.
When you put paper in the multi-purpose tray, please
    remember the following:
■During printing, the inside tray rises to feed paper into the

Printing to the face-up output tray
    (Face-up printing)
When the face-up output tray is open, the printer has a straight paper
path from the paper tray or multi-purpose tray to the back of the
printer. Use this method when you want to print on special media
that is thick or should not be bent, such as thick paper, labels, card
    stock or envelopes.
    1Open the face-up output tray.

3Put the paper in the paper tray or the multi-purpose tray.

    Manual feed
If you put paper in the multi-purpose tray when the setting MANUAL
FEED = ON has been set in PAPER menu using the control panel
Menu buttons, the printer will only load paper from the multi-purpose
    tray.
When you feed paper manually, please remember the
    following:
■If your application software allows you to select manual
feed in the Print menu, you can select it through the
software. Since the software or command setting overrides
the control panel button setting, you do not need to set the
MANUAL FEED mode and the paper size in the PAPER
    menu.
■If you use pre-printed paper in the multi-purpose tray, you
should put the top edge of the paper inside first with the
    pre-printed side face up.
