TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 6 HL7050_US_UG_FM5.5 Troubleshooting paper handling First, make sure that you are using paper that meets our recommended paper specifications. See What kind of paper can I use? in Chapter 1. ProblemRecommendation The printer does not load paper.■If paper is in the paper tray, make sure it is straight. If the paper is curled, you should straighten it before printing. Sometimes it is helpful to remove the paper, turn the stack over, and then put it back in the paper tray. ■Reduce the amount of paper in the paper tray, and then try again. ■Make sure that manual feed mode is not set in the printer driver. ■The pickup roller or separation pad needs to be replaced. Please call your dealer for a replacement. The printer does not load paper from the multi-purpose tray.■Fan the paper well and put it back in firmly. ■Make sure you have chosen the manual feed mode in the printer driver. The printer does not load envelopes.■The printer can load envelopes from the multi- purpose tray. You must set up your application software to print on the size of envelopes you are using. This is usually done in the page setup or document setup menu of your software. Please see your software application manual for instructions. Envelope is creased after it is printed.■Open the face-up output tray, and push down the blue tabs that are at the left-hand and right-hand sides of the back of the printer. There is a paper jam.■Clear the jammed paper (see Paper jams and how to clear them). ■The pickup roller or separation pad needs to be replaced. Please call your dealer for a replacement. The printer feeds multiple pages.■The pickup roller or separation pad needs to be replaced. Please call your dealer for a replacement. The printer does not print to the face-down output tray.■Close the face-up output tray.
6 - 7 TROUBLESHOOTING HL7050_US_UG_FM5.5 The printed pages are curled, so the face-down output tray cannot hold the maximum number of sheets.■Turn over the paper in the paper tray. ■Change the printer driver setting in Media Type to a thicker setting. The printer does not print. ■Make sure that the cable is connected to the printer. ■Make sure that you have chosen the appropriate printer driver. When printing on normal paper, it creases.■Change the printer driver setting in Media to the Thin setting. ProblemRecommendation
TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 8 HL7050_US_UG_FM5.5 Paper jams and how to clear them If paper jams inside the printer, the printer will stop. One of the following LCD messages will appear to tell you where to find the jammed paper. 6 - 9 TROUBLESHOOTING HL7050_US_UG_FM5.5 Paper may jam in the paper tray, inside the printer, in the face-up output tray or where the paper comes out of the printer. Check where the jam is and follow the instructions below to remove the jammed paper. If the error message still appears on the LCD after you remove the jammed paper, there may be more paper jammed somewhere else. Please check the printer thoroughly. After you have removed all the jammed paper, open the top cover and then close it again to start printing. Do not use the following: ■Bent paper ■Moist paper ■Paper that does not meet specifications If the paper is misfeeding or a lot of pages are going through at the same time when you print on small or thick paper, change the paper thickness switches that are on the bottom of the paper tray as follows. TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 10 HL7050_US_UG_FM5.5 JAM A1 (paper jam in the multi-purpose tray) If there is a paper jam in the multi-purpose tray, follow these steps: 1Remove the paper from the multi-purpose tray. 2Fan the paper stack, then put it back in the multi-purpose tray. Figure 6-3 3When loading paper in the multi-purpose tray, make sure it touches the back of the tray and stays below the maximum paper mark ( ). 4Open the top cover of the printer and close it, or press Go to start printing. TROUBLESHOOTING 6 - 12 HL7050_US_UG_FM5.5 If a paper jam occurs inside the paper tray, follow these steps: 1Pull the paper tray out of the printer. 2Pull out the jammed paper. Figure 6-5 3Load paper below the maximum paper mark ( ). While pressing the [blue] paper-guide release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size. Check that the guides are firmly in the slots. ■If you cannot pull out a small piece of jammed paper, you can remove it by turning the dial to the lower position, as shown below. Figure 6-6
