    Improving the print quality
This section provides information on the following topics:
    Examples of poor
    print qualityRecommendation
Faint print■Check the printers environment. Conditions such as
humidity, high temperatures, and so on may cause
this print fault. See Positioning the printer in
    Chapter 1.
■If the whole page is too light, the Toner Save Mode
may be on. Turn off Toner Save Mode in the printer
    Properties tab of the driver.
■Try using a new toner cartridge. See Replacing the
    toner cartridge in Chapter 5.
■You may clear the problem by wiping the scanner
window with a soft cloth. See Cleaning the inside of
the printer or the Maintenance Tutorial video on the
    supplied CD-ROM.
Grey background■Make sure you use paper that meets the
recommended specifications. See What kind of
paper can I use? in Chapter 1.
■Check the printers environment - high temperatures
and high humidity can increase the amount of
background shading. See Positioning the printer in
    Chapter 1.
■Use a new toner cartridge. See Replacing the toner
    cartridge in Chapter 5.
Ghost image■Make sure you use paper that meets our
    specifications. Rough-surfaced paper, paper that
has absorbed moisture, or thick paper can cause this
problem. See What kind of paper can I use? in
    Chapter 1.
■Make sure that you choose the appropriate media
type in the printer driver. See What kind of paper can
    I use? in Chapter 1.
■Try using a new toner cartridge. See Replacing the
    toner cartridge in Chapter 5.
■Try using a new drum unit. See Replacing the drum
    unit in Chapter 5.
Toner specks■Make sure that you use paper that meets our
    specifications. Rough-surfaced paper may cause
the problem. See What kind of paper can I use? in
    Chapter 1.
■The toner cartridge may be damaged. Put in a new
toner cartridge. See Replacing the toner cartridge in
    Chapter 5.

Hollow print■Make sure that you use paper that meets our
specifications. See What kind of paper can I use? in
    Chapter 1.
■Choose Thick paper mode in the printer driver, or use
thinner paper than you are currently using.
■Check the printers environment because conditions
such as high humidity can cause hollow print. See
Positioning the printer in Chapter 1.
Page skewed■Make sure the paper or other print media is loaded
properly in the paper tray and that the guides are not
too tight or too loose against the paper stack.
■Set the paper guides correctly. Make sure that the
tips of the paper guides fit firmly into the slots.
See Printing from the Paper tray in Chapter 1.
■If you are using the multi-purpose tray, see Printing
from the multi-purpose tray in Chapter 1.
■The paper tray may be too full. See Printing from the
    Paper tray in Chapter 1.
■Check the paper type and quality. See What kind of
paper can I use? in Chapter 1.
Curl or wave■Check the paper type and quality. High temperatures
and high humidity will cause paper to curl. See What
kind of paper can I use? in Chapter 1.
■If you dont use the printer very often, the paper may
have been in the paper tray too long. Turn over the
stack of paper in the paper tray. Also, try fanning the
paper stack and then rotating the paper 180° in the
    paper tray.
    Wrinkles or creases
■Make sure the paper is loaded properly. See Printing
from the Paper tray in Chapter 1.
■Check the paper type and quality. See What kind of
paper can I use? in Chapter 1.
■Turn over the stack of paper in the tray or try rotating
the paper 180° in the input tray.
Poor fixing■Make sure that the blue tabs in the rear cover are
re-set by either closing the rear cover or pushing the
blue tabs to their original position. See Printing on
    envelopes in Chapter 1.

    Solving print problems
    ProblemRecommendation
    The printer prints
    unexpectedly or it prints
garbage data.■Make sure the printer cable is not too long. We
recommend that you use a parallel cable that is less
than 1.8 metres (6 feet) long.
■Make sure that the printer cable is not damaged or
    broken.
■If you are using an interface-switching device,
remove it. Connect your computer directly to your
    printer, and then try again.
■Check that you have chosen the appropriate printer
    driver with Set as default.
■Make sure that the printer is not connected to the
same port that is also connected to a storage device
or scanner. Take away all other devices and connect
the port only to the printer.
■Turn off Printer Status reporting in the Device
Options tab in the printer driver.
    The printer cannot print
    full pages of a
document. ■Press the Go button to print the data that is left in the
    printer.
■If the Go button does not clear the error, reduce the
complexity of your document or reduce the print
    resolution.
■Change the following settings in the supplied
    Windows
® driver, and then try again. The best
combination of the settings below will vary depending
    on your document.
    ■Graphics mode
    ■TrueType
    TM mode
    ■Use printer TrueTypeTM fonts
    The printer cannot print
    full pages of a
    document. An error
    message MEMORY
FULL appears.■Press the Go button to print the data that is left in the
    printer.
■Reduce the print resolution or reduce the complexity
    of your document.
■Expand the printer memory by adding a DIMM. See
    RAM expansion in Chapter 4.
    The headers or footers
    appear when I view my
    document on the
    screen but they do not
show up when I print it.■Most laser printers have a restricted area that cannot
be printed on. This unprintable area is usually the
first two lines and the last two lines of a page (leaving
62 printable lines). Adjust the top and bottom
margins of your document to allow for this.
    (For connecting and
    using the RS-232C
    interface only)
    The printer prints the
    first couple of pages
    properly, but some of
    the following pages
have text missing.■This problem is usually related to serial interface
settings. Your computer is not recognizing the printer
input buffers full signal. This could be caused by a
wrong serial cable connection (cable is not wired
properly or is too long) or by a wrong setup of your
    computer serial interface.

    Printing with the serial interface
    ProblemRecommendation
    The printer cannot print
    at all. Your PC shows
    the following error
    message:
    There was an error
    writing to LPT1: (or
BRUSB) for the printer.■Check that the printer cable is not damaged or
    broken.
■If you have an interface-switching device, make sure
that you choose the correct printer.
    ProblemRecommendation
    Cannot print from
application software.■If you are using a serial interface, make sure that the
slide switch of the serial interface is in the correct
position. Make sure that the interface settings have
been properly set up in the INTERFACE menu using
    the control panel.
    (For connecting using the
    RS-232C interface only)
    The printer prints the first
    couple of pages correctly
    but some following pages
have text missing.■This problem is usually related to serial interface
settings. Your computer is not recognizing the printer
input buffers full signal. This could be caused by a
wrong serial cable connection (cable is not wired
properly or is too long) or a wrong setup of your

    Printing from DOS
    Printer HDD (Hard Disk Drive)
    ProblemRecommendation
    Cannot print from
application software■Check that the DOS application software interface
settings match those of your printer. For example, if
you are using a parallel printer cable, you would most
likely set your DOS software printer port to LPT1.
■Check if the printer has any printer alarms.
■Check that you have chosen the appropriate printer
    in your application software.
■If the serial interface is used, make sure that the
RS-232C serial interface has been selected with the
slide switch. Make sure the interface settings were
correctly set up in INTERFACE menu using the
control panel. Make sure the baud rate, parity and
stop bits in your application software matches the
    settings in the printer.
    ProblemRecommendation
    Printer does not
    recognize the HDD.Make sure that:
    ■the cable is connected properly
    ■the HDD is fitted properly
    ■the HDD is formatted properly.
Turn off the printer. Wait a few seconds, then turn it on
again. If this error message appears again, replace the
    HDD with a new one.
