    Cleaning
    Clean the outside and inside of the printer with a dry soft cloth.  
    When you replace the drum unit, make sure you clean the inside of 
    the printer.  If printed pages are stained with toner, clean the inside 
    of the printer with a dry soft cloth.
    Cleaning the outside of the printer
    Clean the outside of the printer as follows:  
    1Turn off the printer power switch, and then unplug the printer 
    power cord.
    2Pull the paper tray out of the printer. 
    3Open the multi-purpose tray.

    4Wipe the outside of the printer with a soft cloth to remove dust.

    5Remove anything that is stuck inside the paper tray.

    6Put the paper tray back in the printer, and then close the 
    multi-purpose tray.
    7Plug the printer power cord back in, and then turn the printer 
    power switch back on.

    Cleaning the inside of the printer
    Clean the inside of the printer as follows:  
    1Turn off the printer power switch, and then unplug the printer 
    power cord.
    2Open the top cover. 
    3Take out the drum unit assembly. 
    When you clean the inside of the printer, pay attention to the 
    following: 
    ■If your clothes are smeared with toner, wipe off the toner 
    with a dry cloth and immediately wash the clothes in cold 
    water to avoid stains. 
    ■Never touch the hot fuser. 
    ■Be careful not to inhale the toner.

    4Wipe off toner and paper dust from the metal plate in the printer 
    with a dry, soft cloth.

    WARNINGAfter you have just used the printer, some parts 
    inside the printer are extremely hot. When you open 
    the top cover of the printer, never touch the fuser 
    and fixing roller.

    6Put the drum unit assembly in the printer. 
    7Close the top cover. 
    8Plug the printer power cord back in, and then turn the printer

    Cleaning the corona wire
    If you are experiencing print quality problems, please clean the 
    corona wire as follows:
    1Turn off the printer power switch, and then unplug the printer 
    power cord.
    2Open the top cover.   
    3Take out the drum unit assembly (drum unit with the toner 
    cartridge).
    ■We recommend that you put the drum unit Assembly on a 
    piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally 
    spill the toner.
    ■To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, do 
    not touch the electrodes shown in Figure 5-23.

    4Clean the Primary Corona Wire inside the drum unit by gently 
    sliding the blue tab from right to left several times.

    5Put the drum unit assembly back in the printer. 
    6Close the top cover.  
    7Plug the printer power cord back in, and then turn the printer 
    power switch back on.
    Make sure to return the tab to the Home position. If you do 
    not, printed pages will have a black vertical stripe.

    This printer will regularly prompt you to replace parts so you can rely 
    upon it to maintain the best print quality.

    1  At 5% print coverage (A4 or Letter size).  The actual number of 
    printed pages will vary depending on the print jobs and paper you 
    use.

    LCD messages
    Error messages
    The LCD names for the paper trays are as follows.
    Upper paper tray TRAY 1
    Multi-purpose tray MP TRAY
    Optional  Lower  tray  TRAY 2, TRAY3, TRAY 4
    Optional Duplex unit for 
    Duplex printingDX
    Optional Mailbox unit MX
    Error MessageAction
    TONER LIFE ENDReplace the toner cartridge with a new one. 
    See Replacing the toner cartridge in Chapter 5.
    CARTRIDGE ERRORTake out the toner cartridge and put it back into the 
    printer again. See Replacing the toner cartridge in 
    Chapter 5.
    NO PAPER XXXPut paper in the empty tray. 
    NO TRAY XXXPut the paper tray in the printer. 
    COVER OPENClose the top cover of the printer. 
    Close the Duplex cover. 
    Close the back cover of the mailbox.
    FACEUP OPENClose the face-up output tray.
    FACEUP CLOSEOpen the face-up output tray. Push down the two blue 
    levers, and then press Go.
    JAM XXXCarefully pull out the jammed paper from the indicated 
    area as shown in Paper jams and how to clear them.
    STACKER FULLTake some paper out of the output tray.
    SIZE MISMATCHPut the same size paper in the paper tray or multi-
    purpose tray that is selected in the printer driver, and 
    then press Go. 
    TOO MANY TRAYSYou can only have up to three lower trays.  Remove 
    any extra lower trays.

    MEDIATYPE ERRORSpecify the correct type of media.  
    MANUAL FEEDPut the same size of paper in the multi-purpose tray as 
    is shown on the LCD.  If the printer is paused, press 
    Go.
    SIZE ERROR XXXPut the same size paper in the paper tray or multi-
    purpose tray that is selected in the printer driver. See 
    What kind of paper can I use? in Chapter 1.
    NO TRAY ID XXXThe tray you are trying to print to has been taken out.  
    Put the tray back in the printer.  
    SIZE ERROR DXPut the same size paper in the paper tray or multi-
    purpose tray that is selected in the printer driver. See 
    What kind of paper can I use? in Chapter 1.
    SIZE ERROR MXPut the same size paper in the paper tray or multi-
    purpose tray that is selected in the printer driver. See 
    What kind of paper can I use? in Chapter 1.
    NO DX UNITPut the Duplex unit on the printer properly.  See the 
    Users Guide for the Duplex unit.  
    DX LEVER ERRORMove the Duplex lever to the correct position.
    NO MX UNITChange the job properties or install the Mailbox unit 
    correctly.
    DIMM ERRORRe-install the DIMM correctly.
    Turn off the printer.  Wait a few seconds, and then turn 
    it on again.  If this error message appears again, 
    replace the DIMM with a new one.  
    CARD ERRORMake sure of the following:
    ■The CompactFlash card is installed properly. 
    ■The installed CompactFlash card is formatted 
    properly  
    Turn off the printer.  Wait a few seconds, then turn it on 
    again.  If this error message appears again, replace 
    the CompactFlash card with a newone.
    HDD ERRORMake sure of the following points:
    ■The cable is connected correctly.
    ■The HDD is installed correctly.
    ■The installed HDD is formatted correctly.
    Turn off the printer.  Wait a few seconds, then turn it on 
    again.  If this error message appears again, replace 
    the HDD with a new one.  
    CARD REMOVALTurn off the printer.  Wait a few seconds, then turn it on 
    again.  If this error message appears again, replace 
    the CompactFlash card with a new one.    
    LINE ERRORCheck the serial interface settings (baud rate, code 
    type, parity and handshake protocols).
    BUFFER ERRORCheck the Interface settings.
    STORAGE FULLDelete unnecessary macros or fonts, or replace the 
    CompactFlash card or HDD with a new one.
