Search How to: Search Search for an item You can search for help, contacts, documents, files, memos, pictures, videos, and more on your BlackBerry smartphone. You can narrrow your search from an app, or you can extend your search to the Internet. You can also view items you selected from previous search results. 1.On the home screen, click the icon. 2.Type your search terms. To stop a search, press the key twice. Change search options 1.On the home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon. 2.Click Device > Search. •To clear search history, click Delete Search History. •To turn off search history, clear the Show Search History checkbox. •To turn off web suggestions, clear the Show Web Suggestions checkbox. •To change which applications appear in your search results, in the Data Sources and Extended Providers sections, select or clear the checkbox beside one or more of the listed applications. 3.Press the key > Save. Change the language for voice enabled search 1.On the home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon. 2.Click Typing and Language > Language. 3.Change the Voice Search field. 4.Press the key > Save. Search for messages You can search for messages on your BlackBerry smartphone. You might also be able to search for messages in the email application on your computer or in another associated email account if your email account uses the BlackBerry Internet Service or a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that supports this feature. On the home screen, click the Messages icon. • To search for messages based on the subject, highlight a message. Press the key > Search by > Subject. • To search for messages based on the sender, highlight a message. Press the key > Search by > Sender. • To perform an advanced search, press the key > Search by > Advanced. Specify the search criteria. To save the search criteria, press the key > Save. Search for a contact You can search for contacts in your contact list or, if your email account uses a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you might also be able to search for contacts in your organization's contact list. 1.On the home screen, click the Contacts icon. •To search for a contact in your contact list, type all or part of a contact's name. •To search for a contact in your organization's contact list, click Remote Lookup. Type all or part of a contact's name. Click OK. 2.Highlight a contact. 3.Press the key. •To view information for a contact, click View. •To add a contact from your organization's contact list to your contact list, click Add to Contacts. •To add all of the contacts from your organization's contact list to your contact list, click Add All to Contacts. •To view the next 20 matches in your organization's contact list, click Get More Results. •To narrow search results when a contact's name has multiple matches, highlight a contact's name. Security How to: Security Security basics About the smartphone password There are several types of password protection that you can use on your BlackBerry smartphone. Smartphone password You can create a smartphone password to help protect your smartphone from unauthorized access and use, and you can set your smartphone to lock after a certain period of inactivity. You must enter your smartphone password to unlock your smartphone. If you forget your password, it can't be recovered. For security reasons, if you exceed the number of allowed password attempts, your smartphone deletes all your smartphone data and prompts you to set a new password. BlackBerry ID After you create a BlackBerry ID, you can use a single email address and password to log in to any BlackBerry product or service that supports BlackBerry ID. If you exceed the number of allowed attempts to log in using BlackBerry ID, wait for the security lockout to end before you try to log in again. To reset your BlackBerry ID password, visit www.blackberry.com/ blackberryid . Password Keeper You can use the Password Kepper ( ) to store password information, such as your passwords for online banking. The Password Keeper is designed to encrypt your password information, and decrypt it when you enter the Password Keeper password. Rember that you might also need your smartphone password before you access the Password Keeper. If you exceed the number of allowed attempts to open the Password Keeper, the Password Keeper data can't be accessed unless you restore your smartphone data. you are prompted to create a Password Keeper password. Then, you are prompted to enter the old Password Keeper password to access old password information. Restoring your data Research In Motion recommends that you regularly create and save a backup file on your computer, especially before you update any software. Maintaining a current backup file on your computer might allow you to recover smartphone data if your smartphone is lost, stolen, or corrupted by an unforeseen issue. Lock or unlock your smartphone You can lock the screen to avoid pressing it or making calls accidentally and, if you have set a BlackBerry smartphone password, you can also lock your smartphone with a password. Do one of the following: • To lock the screen, press the key on the top of your smartphone. • To unlock the screen, press the key and slide your finger up. • To lock your smartphone with a password, on the home screen or in a folder, click the icon. •To unlock your smartphone, enter your password. If you set a BlackBerry smartphone password, you can set your smartphone to lock automatically after a certain period of time or when you insert your smartphone into a holster. 1.On the home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon. 2.Click Security > Password. •To change the amount of time that passes before your smartphone locks automatically, change the Lock After field. •To lock your smartphone when you insert it into a holster, select the Lock Handheld Upon Holstering checkbox. 3.Press the key > Save. Delete smartphone data, third-party applications, or media card files Before you delete your BlackBerry smartphone data or media card files, consider backing up the data and files so that you have a copy on your computer. CAUTION: If encryption is turned on, the process for deleting all smartphone data can take about one hour to complete. You can't stop the process after you start it. If you reset your smartphone, the process restarts after the smartphone restarts. 1.On the home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon. 2.Click Security > Security Wipe. 3.Select the checkboxes for items that you want to delete. 4.Type blackberry. 5.Click Wipe Data. If your smartphone was previously associated with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, when you delete all your smartphone data, any IT policy rules that were associated with your smartphone remain and may continue to affect the features and settings that are available on your smartphone. Parental Controls About Parental Controls Parental Controls are designed to help you have more control over how the features of the BlackBerry smartphone are used. With Parental Controls you can block content, turn features on or off, and decide what types of communication are available. When you turn on Parental Controls a four-digit PIN is required to change the allowed services, which prevents children or other parties from changing your settings. Turn on Parental Controls When you set a PIN for Parental Controls, the only way to reset the PIN if you forget it is to delete all the data on the smartphone.
