MAINTENANCE1 MAINTENANCE SERVICE SCHEDULE The following sectiondescribes theitems detailed in the vehicle Service Schedule. Whererequired instructions aregiven forcarrying outtheservice procedure, oracross reference isgiven tothe section in the manual wheretheprocedure maybefound. Service Maintenance Schedulesarepublished separately toreflect theneeds andintervals foreach vehicle variant. Procedures inthe Workshop Manual must beused inconjunction withtheService Schedule sheets. Service Maintenance Schedulesareavailable from: Land Rover Publications, Character Mailing, Heysham Road, Bootle, Merseyside, L701JL VEHICLE INTERIOR CHECK SEATS&BELTS Check condition andsecurity ofseat belts, seatbelt mountings, seatbeltbuckles andoperation ofinertia seat belts. CHECK OPERATION OFLAMPS Check operation ofall lamps, hornsandwarning indicators. CHECK OPERATION OFWIPERS Check operation offront/rear wipersandwashers and condition ofwiper blades. CHECK OPERATION OFHANDBRAKE Handbrake check/adjust 1. Chock roadwheels. 2. Raise onerear wheel clearofground and support securely withaxle stand. 3. Release handbrake lever. 4.Underneath vehicle,tightenadjuster bolt clockwise to 25Nm (18lbf/ft)tofully lock brake drum. 5. Slacken adjusting boltby1.5 turns togive brake shoes running clearance. Checkthatthedrum is free torotate. 6. Adjust handbrake cablelocknuts togive pawl two notches freemovement onthe rachet before being fullyoperational onthird notch ofrachet. NOTE: Cableadjustment mustONLY be used forinitial setting andtocompensate for cable stretch. ItMUST NOTbeused to take upbrake shoewear, which MUSTbeadjusted at brake drum. 7. Operate handbrake tosettle brake shoes. Recheck handbrake isfully operational onthird notch ofrachet pawl.Readjust ifnecessary. 8. Remove axlestand andwheel chocks.
10MAINTENANCE 2 MAINTENANCE BATTERY CONNECTIONS NOTE:Thevehicle maybefitted withan alarm andimmobilisation systemusinga battery backed-up alarmsounder. See ELECTRICAL, Repair,Battery Disconnect batteryleads,cleanandgrease with petroleum jelly,including batteryterminals. CHECK OPERATION OFDOOR SWITCHES When aVehicle Immobilisation andAlarm System is fitted itis important thatalldoor andbonnet switches operate correctly, otherwise perimeterandinterior protection maynotfunction ifa door orthe bonnet is opened. VEHICLE EXTERIOR CHECK/ADJUST HEADLAMPALIGNMENT Check/adjust headlampalignment. CHECK ROADWHEELS ANDTYRES Check roadwheels fordamage. Check tyres,including spare,forcompliance with manufactures specificaton. Check visually forcuts, lumps, bulges, uneven tread wear andtread depth. SeeINTRODUCTION, Information, wheelsandtyres Check/adjust tyrepressures.See WHEELS AND TYRES, Repair, Tyrespressures INSPECT BRAKEPADSFORWEAR, CALIPERS FOR LEAKS ANDCONDITION OFDISCS Check thickness ofbrake pads,andrenew ifthickness is less than 3,00mm(0.12 in).Check brakepadsfor oil contamination andfitanew set,ifnecessary, See BRAKES, Repair,frontbrake pads orSee BRAKES, Repair,rearbrake pads WARNING: Whenrenewing brakepads,it is essential thatonly genuine components with correct gradeoflining areused. Always fitnew pads ascomplete axlesets, NEVER individually oras asingle wheelset.Serious consequences couldresult fromoutofbalance braking duetomixing oflinings. CHECK FRONTWHEEL ALIGNMENT Use recognised wheelalignment equipment tocarry out this operation. MAINTENANCE5 MAINTENANCE CHECK COOLING, INTERCOOLING ANDHEATING SYSTEMS Check cooling, andheater systems forleaks and pipes/hoses forsecurity andcondition. Refillortop up as necessary. CAUTION: Itis important thatthecorrect procedure isfollowed whenrefilling or topping upthe cooling systemtoavoid trapping airinthe system. WARNING: Donot remove capsandplugs when engine ishot because cooling system ispressurised andpersonal scalding couldresult. 1. Remove plasticplugsfromthermostat housing and radiator. 2. Fill cooling systemwith50% -50% of water/anti-freeze mixture. 3. Fill from expansion tankuntilradiator isfull, with level inexpansion tankthesame asinradiator. NOTE: Careshould betaken toavoid excess coolant spillage fromradiator. 4.Fitplastic pluginradiator. 5. Add afurther 1litre (1.76 pints) ofcoolant to expansion tankandallow tosettle. 6. Refit expansion tankcapand thermostat housing plug. 7. Run engine atidle speed forfive minutes. 8. Switch offengine, checkthatexpansion tank coolant islevel withtopofindicator postandtop up asnecessary. Check intercooler andturbo-charger systemforair leaks andpipes/hoses forsecurity andcondition. All system hosesshould berenewed atfirst signs of deterioration. VALVE CLEARANCES -CHECK/ADJUST Check/adjust valveclearances. SeeENGINE, Adjustment, Valveclearances -check andadjust RENEW FUELFILTER ELEMENT Remove 1. Clean areaaround filterhead andposition a container beneath. 2. Unscrew andremove filter,catch fuelreleased. Refit 3. Wet seal ofnew filter withfuel. 4. Screw newfilter intoposition. 5. Ensure draintapisfully closed.
10MAINTENANCE 6 MAINTENANCE RENEW AIRCLEANER ELEMENTANDCLEAN DUMP VALVE Remove 1. Release 2retaining clipsandliftair cleaner from its cradle sufficiently togain access toelement. 2. Unscrew wingnutand remove endcover. 3. Unscrew secondwingnutand withdraw element from aircleaner casing. 4.Clean interior andexterior ofcasing andcover. 5. Squeeze opendump valveandcheck that interior isclean. Renew valve,ifperished. Refit 6. Fitnew element, sealfirst, intocasing and secure withwing nut. 7. Fitend cover, alignmating arrows, andsecure with wing nut. 8. Position aircleaner inmounting cradleand secure withretaining clips. CLEAN ENGINE BREATHER FILTER Remove 1. Disconnect breathertophose. 2. Remove singleboltand ease breather from rocker cover. 3.Disconnect bottomhoseandremove engine breather. 4. Using suitable flushingsolvent,thoroughly clean breather filter.Remove anddiscard rubberO ring from breather pipe. Refit 5. Fitnew rubber Oring toengine breather. 6. Connect breatherbottomhose. 7. Locate breather intorocker coverandsecure with retaining bolt,tightening to 9Nm (7 lbf/ft). 8. Connect breathertophose.
MAINTENANCE7 MAINTENANCE RENEW AUXILIARY DRIVEBELT Renew drivebelt. SeeELECTRICAL, Repair, Auxiliary drivebelt RENEW COMPRESSOR DRIVEBELT Renew compressor drivebelt. SeeAIR CONDITIONING, Repair,Compressor drivebelt CHECK/TOP UPPOWER STEERING RESERVOIR WARNING: DONOT start engine iffluid level inreservoir hasdropped below dipstick -severe damage tothe power steering systemcouldresult. NOTE: Checkfluidlevel withengine switched offand system cold.Ensure that steering wheelisnot turned afterstopping engine. 1. Clean andremove reservoir cap. 2. Wipe distick cleanandfully refitcap. 3. Remove capand check fluidlevel. Ensure fluid level isbetween UPPERmarkandendof dipstick. 4. Top up,ifnecessary, withrecommended fluid. SeeLUBRICANTS, FLUIDSAND CAPACITIES, Information,Recommended lubricants andfluids DONOT fillabove UPPER markondipstick. CHECK/TOP UPCLUTCH FLUIDRESERVOIR WARNING: Clutchfluidwilldamage painted surfaces; cleanupany spillage immediately andrinse withplenty ofwater. If clutch fluidshould comeintocontact withthe skin oreyes, rinseimmediately withplenty of water. 1. Clean andremove reservoir cap. 2. Check fluidlevel andtopupifnecessary, maintaining thelevel approximately 10mm (0.39 in) below topofreservoir, usingrecommended fluid. 10MAINTENANCE 8 MAINTENANCE CHECK/TOP UPBRAKE FLUIDRESERVOIR WARNING: DONOT drive thevehicle with the fluid level below MINmark. Brake fluidwilldamage paintedsurfaces; cleanup any spillage immediately andrinse withplenty of water. If brake fluidshould comeintocontact withskin or eyes, rinseimmediately withplenty ofwater. 1. Check thefluid level visually through transparent side ofreservoir withoutremoving cap. 2. Iflevel isbelow MAXmarkclean andremove reservoir cap. 3. Top uptoMAX markwithrecommended brake fluid See LUBRICANTS, FLUIDSAND CAPACITIES, Information,Recommended lubricants andfluids CHECK/TOP UPWASHER RESERVOIR Top upwasher reservoir towithin 25mm (1.0 in)of filler neck. Useascreen washer solvent/anti-freeze solution toassist removing mud,flies,androad film and protect against freezing. LUBRICATE ACCELERATOR LINKAGES Lubricate accelerator cableatadjustment ferruleand linkage withinjector pumpandatpedal clevis pin. CHECK/ADJUST ENGINEIDLESPEED Check/adjust lowand high engine idlespeed with engine atnormal running temperature. SeeFUEL SYSTEM, Adjustment, lowand high idlespeed adjustment CHECK/ADJUST STEERINGBOX Check steering boxand pipes/hoses forfluid leaks. Check thatthere isno backlash insteering boxwhen in straight aheadposition. Adjuststeering boxif necessary. See STEERING, Adjustment, Power steering box VISUALLY CHECKINTERCOOLER/RADIATOR FOR EXTERNAL OBSTRUCTIONS Check intercooler/radiator forexternal obstructions. If necessary, applyairpressure toengine sideofmatrix to clear obstruction. Ifmud ordirt isevident, carefully use ahose towash awayobstruction. FLUSH DIESEL INTERCOOLER Remove 1. Remove intercooler matrix. SeeFUEL SYSTEM, Repair,Intercooler 2.Flush matrix withICIGENKLENE proprietary cleaner, following manufacturers instructions. 3. Dry intercooler completely ensuringthatnoliquid remains inmatrix. Refit 4. Refit intercooler matrix. SeeFUEL SYSTEM, Repair, Intercooler
