    8 REPAIR
    LOWER
    STEERING SHAFTANDUNIVERSAL
    JOINTS Service repairno-57.40.16
    Remove 1. Remove vehiclebonnet.
    2. Set road wheels andsteering wheelinstraight
    ahead position.
    3.Mark relationship ofsteering columninnershaft
    to top universal joint.
    4. Remove 2bolts fromtopuniversal joint.
    5. Remove lowerboltfrom bottom universal joint.
    6. Slacken upperboltoflower universal jointand
    withdraw shaft.
    7. Inspect upperandlower universal jointsforwear
    and excessive play,renew ifnecessary.
    8. Inspect universal jointsforstiffness, lubricateif
    necessary. Refit
    9. Fituniversal jointssopinch boltholes lineup
    with flatonshaft. Notethatthelong jointisfitted
    to short length ofshaft andshort jointtolong
    end.
    10. With steering lockengaged androad wheels in
    straight aheadposition, lineupassembly marks.
    11. Position shaftassembly ontosteering column.
    Move assembly upspline toenable lower
    universal jointtofitonto steering boxsplines.
    12. Align boltholes withgrooves insplines. Fitpinch
    bolts andtighten to
    25Nm (18lbf/ft).
    STEERING WHEEL
    Service repairno-57.60.01
    Remove 1. Set road wheels andsteering wheelinstraight
    ahead position.
    2. Prise decal fromsteering wheelpad.
    3. Remove retaining nutand shakeproof washer.
    Make alignment marksoncolumn andwheel
    pad.
    4. Withdraw steeringwheelfromcolumn spline.
    Refit 5. Turn indicator cancelling ringsothat slots are
    vertical andlugwith arrow points tothe left, in
    direction ofindicator switch.
    6. Ensure frontroad wheels areinstraight ahead
    position.
    7. Fitsteering wheelwithfinisher attachment lugat
    the bottom, ensuring indicatorcancelling forks
    locate incancelling ringslots. Alignassembly
    marks.
    8. Secure wheelwithretaining nutand new
    shakeproof washer.Tightento
    25Nm (18lbf/ft).

    Remove 1. Disconnect battery.
    2. Set road wheels instraight aheadposition.
    3. Remove steeringwheel
    SeeSteering wheel.
    4. Remove instrument panel
    SeeINSTRUMENTS,
    Repair, Instrument panel
    .
    5. Remove steeringcolumnnacelle
    SeeSteering
    column nacelle
    .
    6.Note position ofharness leadsonback ofstarter
    switch anddisconnect lucars.Iffitted, remove
    alarm system passive coilfrom switch

    7. Using apunch orstud extractor remove2shear
    bolts securing steeringlock/starter switchto
    column.
    8. Remove steeringlockandcollect 2washers
    between lockandclamp.
    Refit 9. Fitsteering lock/switch inposition andlineup
    with switch plunger.
    10. Secure locktocolumn withclamp andnew shear
    bolts. Evenly tightenboltsbutdonot shear them.
    11. Temporarily fitsteering wheelandoperate lock
    and switch mechanism toensure itfunctions
    correctly.
    12. Fully tighten retaining boltsuntilheads shear.
    13. Connect harnessleadstorear ofstarter switch.
    If applicable, fitalarm system passive coil

    Service repairno-57.40.29
    Remove 1. Disconnect battery.
    2. Remove steeringwheel
    SeeSteering wheel.
    3.Remove 5screws and2self tapping screwsand
    lift top half ofnacelle fromsteeering column
    switch assembly.
    4. Ease bottom halfofnacelle fromswitch
    gaiters/grommets. Removelowernacelle.
    Refit 5. Locate tophalf ofnacelle inposition andfitto
    switch assembly gaiters/grommets.
    6. Locate lowerhalfofnacelle andloosely fit
    retaining screws.
    7. Ensure switchgaiters/grommets arecorrectly
    located andnacelle isaligned withswitch
    assembly brackets.
    8. Fully tighten screws.
    9. Fitsteering wheel
    SeeSteering wheel.
    10. Reconnect battery. DROP
    ARM
    Service repairno-57.50.14
    Remove 1. Park vehicle onlevel surface andchock rear
    wheels.
    2. Raise vehicle andlocate axlestands oruse a
    ramp.
    3. Disconnect steeringdamperfromdrag link

    4.Disconnect draglinkball joint from drop arm
    using extractor LRT-57-018 .
    5. Mark droparmandsteering boxforreassembly.
    6.Bend backtabsonlocking washer, slacken
    retaining nut,butdonot remove.
    7. Fitextractor LRT-57-012 andrelease droparm
    from steering boxspline.

    Remove nutand discard lockingwasher.
    9. Remove droparm.
    Refit 10. Centralise steeringbox
    SeeAdjustment,
    Centralise steeringbox
    .
    11. Align reassembly marksandfitdrop armonto
    steering boxsplines.
    12. Fitnew tabwasher andretaining nut.Tighten to
    176Nm(130 lbf/ft)andbend overtabwasher.
    13. Fitdrag linktodrop arm.Tighten balljoint nutto
    40Nm (30lbf/ft).
    14. Remove axlestands orvehicle fromramp.

    DAMPER
    Service repairno-57.55.21
    Remove
    1. Park vehicle onlevel ground andchock rear
    wheels.
    2. Raise vehicle andlocate axlestands oruse a
    ramp.
    3. Remove boltsecuring steeringdampertodrag
    link bracket.
    4. Remove retaining nuts,washers andrubber
    bush securing dampertochassis mounting.
    5. Withdraw damper.
    6. Check rubber bushes andwashers, renewif
    necessary. Refit
    7. Ensuring rubberbushes andwashers are
    correctly positioned, fitsteering damperto
    chassis mounting.
    8. Fitdamper todrag linkbracket.
    9. Remove axlestands orvehicle fromramp.

    TRACK
    RODANDLINKAGE
    Service repairno-57.55.09
    Remove 1. Park vehicle onlevel ground andchock rear
    wheels.
    2. Raise vehicle andlocate axlestands oruse a
    ramp.
    3. Centralise steering
    SeeAdjustment,
    Centralise steeringbox
    .
    4.Unscrew 2bolts andremove trackrodprotection
    bracket fromaxledifferential housing.
    5. Remove splitpinand castellated nutsecuring
    track rodtoswivel housing arms.
    6. Disconnect trackrodball joints using
    LRT-57-018 .
    7. Remove trackrod.
    8. Slacken clampbolts.
    9. Unscrew balljoints.
    Refit 10. Fitnew balljoints totrack rodand loosely tighten
    clamp bolts.
    11. Screw inball joints tofull extent ofthreads and
    fully tighten clampbolts.
    CAUTION: Atrack rodthat isdamaged or
    bent must berenewed. DONOT attempt to
    repair orstraighten it.
    12.Fittrack rodtoswivel housing armsandtighten
    ball joint nuts to
    40Nm (30lbf/ft).Fitnew split
    pin.
    13. Fittrack rodprotection brackettoaxle differential
    housing.
    14. Check wheelalignment
    SeeAdjustment,
    Front wheel alignment
    .
    15. Remove axlestands orvehicle fromramp.

    14 REPAIR
    DRAG
    LINKANDDRAG LINKENDS
    Service repairno-57.55.17
    Remove 1. Park vehicle onlevel ground andchock rear
    wheels.
    2. Set road wheels instraight aheadposition.
    3. Raise vehicle andfitaxle stands oruse aramp. 4.
    Remove frontroad wheel.
    5. Disconnect steeringdamperatdrag linkbracket.
    6. Remove splitpinand castellated nutsecuring
    drag linkball joints toswivel housing arms.
    7. Disconnect draglinkball joints using
    LRT-57-018 .
    8. Remove draglink.
    9. Slacken clampbolts.
    10. Unscrew balljoints andremove fromdrag link.
    11. Clean internal threads ofdrag link.
    12.Fitnew ends todrag linkand loosely fitclamp
    bolts.
    13. Setball joints todrag linkmeasurement to28,5
    mm.
    14. Adjust ballpincentres tonominal lengthof924
    mm, thislength isadjusted duringrefit.

    Centralise steeringbox
    SeeAdjustment,
    Centralise steeringbox
    .
    16. Align steering wheel,ifnecessary.
    CAUTION: Adrag linkthat isdamaged or
    bent must berenewed. DONOT attempt
    repair.
    17. Fitdrag linktoswivel housing armsandtighten
    nuts to
    40Nm (30lbf/ft).Fitnew splitpins.
    18. Ensure fullsteering travelisobtained between
    lock stops
    SeeAdjustment, Steeringlock
    stops
    . Adjust draglinklength tosuit.
    19. Tap balljoints indirection shownsoboth pins
    are insame angular plane.
    20. Tighten clampboltsto
    14Nm (10lbf/ft).
    21. Refit roadwheel andremove axlestands or
    vehicle fromramp.
    22. Road testvehicle.
    23. Ifdriving straight aheadandsteering wheelis
    offset by0°± 5° in either direction, correctby
    adjusting draglinklength.
    WARNING: Tocorrect steering wheel
    deviations greaterthan±5 °remove and
    reposition steeringwheel

    OVERHAUL
    POWER
    STEERING BOX-ADWEST
    Service repairno-57.10.07
    Overhaul
    NOTE: Overhaul ofsteering boxshould
    not becarried outduring thewarranty
    period.
    WARNING: Wearsafety glasses while
    removing andrefitting circlipsand
    retaining ring.
    CAUTION: Absolutecleanliness is
    essential whenoverhauling powersteering
    box.
    1. Remove steeringboxfrom vehicleSeeRepair,
    Power Steering Box
    .Mark droparmand
    steering boxforrealignment onassembly.
    Remove droparmusing extractor LRT-57-012 .
    Loosen droparmsecuring nut,butdonot
    remove beforeusingextractor. Removedirt
    excluder fromoutput shaft.
    2. Drain oil,remove blanking plugsandbleed
    screw. Holdsteering boxover suitable container,
    turn input shaftfromlocktolock, untiloilis
    drained. Refitbleed screw.
    3. Rotate retainer ringuntil oneendis12 mm from
    extractor hole.Using adrift through holein
    cylinder, liftretaining ringfrom groove incylinder
    bore.
    4. Remove retainerring,using ascrewdriver.
    5. Turn input shaft(leftlock onleft hand drive, right
    lock onright hand drive) untilpiston pushes out
    cover. Turninput shaftfullyinopposite direction,
    applying pressure topiston.
    6. Remove setscrew retaining rackpadadjuster.
    7. Remove rackadjuster andpad.
    8. Remove sectorshaftadjuster locknut.
    9. Remove fourbolts fromsector shaftcover.
    10. Screw insector shaftadjuster untilcover is
    removed.
    NOTE: Sealant isapplied tohexagon
    socket totamperproof sectorshaft
    adjuster.
    11. Slide outsector shaft.

    2 OVERHAUL
    12.
    Remove piston,abolt screwed intopiston will
    assist removal.
    13. Remove inputshaftdirtexcluder.
    14. Remove wormadjuster locknutusingCwrench
    LRT-57-007 .
    15. Remove wormadjuster usingwrench
    LRT-57-006 .
    16.Tap splined endofshaft tofree bearing.
    17. Remove bearingcupand caged ballbearing
    assembly.
    18. Remove valveandworm assembly.
    19. Remove innerbearing cage,cupand shim
    washers. Retainshimsforreassembly.
    NOTE: Should difficulty beexperienced
    warm casing andbearing assembly. Cool
    bearing cupusing amandrel andtap
    steering boxonabench. Steering
    boxseals
    20.Remove circlipandseal from sector shaft
    housing bore.
    CAUTION: Donot remove sectorshaft
    bearings fromcasing. Replacement parts
    are not available. Ifsector shaftbearings
    are worn fitanew steering box.
    21. Remove dirtexcluder, circlipandseal from input
    shaft housing bore.
    CAUTION: Theuseofaseal puller is
    recommended toprevent damage to
    casing, andpossible oilleaks.
