Set up the printer for wireless communication ●Before you begin ● Set up the printer on your wireless network ● Change the connection type ● Test the wireless connection ● Turn on or off the wireless capability of the printer NOTE:If you encounter problems co nnecting the printer, see Unable to connect the printer wirelessly on page 150. Before you begin Ensure the following: ● The printer is not connected to the network using an Ethernet c able. ● The wireless network is set up and working properly. ● The printer and the computers that use the printer are on the s ame network (subnet). While connecting the printer, you might be prompt ed to enter the wireless network name (SSID) and a wireless password. ● The wireless network name is the name of your wireless network. ● The wireless password prevents ot her people from connecting to your wireless network without your permission. Depending on th e level of security required, your wireless network might use either a WPA key or WEP passphrase. If you have not changed the networ k name or the security passkey since setting up your wireless network, you can sometimes find them on the back or side of the wireless router. If you cannot find the network name or the security password or cannot remember this information, see the documentation provided with your computer or with the wireless router. If you still cannot find this information, contact your n etwork administrator or the person who set up the wireless network. Set up the printer on your wireless network Use the Wireless Setup Wizard from the printer control panel di splay to set up wireless communication. For more information, see Change from an Ethernet connection to a wireless connection on page 107. 1. From the printer contr ol panel display, touch and slide your finger across the screen and then touch Setup. 2. Touch Network Setup . 3. Touch Wireless Settings . 4. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard . 5. If you are already using the printer with a different type of connection, such as a USB connection, follow the instructions in Change the connection type on page 107 to set up the printer on your wireless network. Change the connection type After you have installed the HP printer software and connected the printer to your computer or to a network, you can use the software to change the connection type (for example, from a USB connection to a wireless connection). NOTE: If you are changing to a wirele ss connection, make sure that an Ethernet cable has not been connected to the printer. Connect ing an Ethernet cable turns off the wireless capability of the printer. Also, you might be prompted to te mporarily connect a USB cable during the setup process. To change the connection type, do one of the following: ● Change from an Ethernet connect ion to a wireless connection ● Change from a USB connection to a wireless connection Change from an Ethernet connection to a wireless connection NOTE:Check the prerequisites before you begin. For more information, see Before you begin on page 106. To change from an Ethernet connection to a wireless connection (Windows) 1. Remove the Ethernet cable from the printer. 2. Open the printer softwar e after the installation. For more info rmation, see Open the HP printer software (Windows) on page 37. Run the Wireless Setup Wizard to make the wireless connection. For more information, see Set up the printer on your wireless network on page 106. To change from an Ethernet connection to a w ireless connection (OS X) Before you proceed, go through the list at Before you begin on page 106. 1. Connect the printer to your wireless network. 2. Use HP Setup Assistant in Applications/Hewlett-Pa ckard/Device Utilities to change the software connection to wirele ss for this printer. Change from a USB connection to a wireless connection NOTE:Check the prerequisites before you begin. For more information, see Before you begin on page 106. To change from a USB connection to a wireless network (Windows) 1. Depending on your operating syst em, do one of the following: ● Windows 8: Right-click an empty area on the Start screen, click All Apps on the app bar, select the printer name, and then click Utilities. ● Windows 7, Windows Vista , and Windows XP: From the computer desktop, click Start, select All Programs , click HP, click the folder of your printer. 2. Click Printer Setup & Software . 3. Select Convert a USB connecte d printer to wireless. Follow the on-screen instructions. ENWW Set up the printer for wireless communication 107
To change from a USB connection to a wireless network (OS X) 1. Connect the printer to your wireless network. 2. Use HP Setup Assistant in Applications/Hewlett-Pa ckard/Device Utilities to change the software connection to wirele ss for this printer. Test the wireless connection Print the wireless test report fo r information about the printer wireless connection. The wireless test report provides information about the printer status, hardware (MAC) address, and IP address. If the printer is connected to a networ k, the test report displays details about the network settings. To print the wireless test report 1.From the printer con trol panel, touch (Wireless), and then touch Settings. 2. Touch Print Reports 3. Touch Print Wireless Test Report . Turn on or off the wireless capability of the printer The wireless capability of the pr inter is on by default, as indicated by the blue Wireless light on the printer control panel. If the wi reless light is blinking, wireless enable (wireless radio on) but you do not have a wireless connection. If the wireless light is on solid blue, the printer has an active connection to a wireless network. If your printer is connected usi ng an Ethernet, the wireless ca pability is not used, in this case you might want to turn off the printer wireless capability. NOTE: Connecting an Ethernet cable to the printer automatically turns off the wireless capability and the Wireless light also goes off. 1. Change network settings From the printer control panel, you can set up and manage your printer wireless connection and perform a variety of network management tasks. This includes vi ewing and changing network settings, restoring network defau lts, and turning the wireless function on or off. ● View and print network settings ● Set link speed ● Change IP settings CAUTION: Network settings are provided fo r your convenience. However, unless you are an advanced user, you should not ch ange some of these settings (such as the link speed, IP settings, default gateway, and firewall settings). View and print network settings To view or print network settings, use one of the following way s: ● From the printer con trol panel, touch (Wireless) or (Ethernet). The network status screen is displayed. ● Print the network configuration pa ge. For more information, see Network configuration page on page 126. ● Run the wireless test. Fo r more information, see Step 3: Run the wireless test on page 151. To access the software, see Open the HP printer software (Windows) on page 37. Set link speed You can change the speed at which data is transmitted over the network. The default is Automatic. 1. From the printer contr ol panel, touch and slide your finger acr oss the screen, touch Setup, and then touch Network Setup . 2. Touch Ethernet Settings . 3. Select Advanced Setup . 4. Touch Link Speed. 5. Touch the appropriate option tha t matches your network hardware . Change IP settings The default IP setting for the IP settings is Automatic , which sets the IP settings automatically. If you are an advanced user and want to use different settings (such a s the IP address, subnet mask, or the default gateway), you c an change them manually. CAUTION:Be careful when manually assigning an IP address. If you enter an invalid IP address during the installation, your netw ork components cannot connect with the printer. 1.From the printer contr ol panel, touch and slide your finger acr oss the screen, touch Setup, and then touch Network Setup . 2. 5.A message appears warning that c hanging the IP address removes the printer from the network. Touch OK to continue. 6. Automatic is selected by default. To chang e the settings manually, touch Manual , and then enter the appropriate information for the following settings: ● IP ● Subnet Mask ● Default Gateway ● DNS Address 7. Change from a wireless connection to a USB or Ethernet connection To change from a wireless connection to a USB or Ethernet connection(Windows) 1. Depending on your operating syst em, do one of the following: ● Windows 8: Right-click an empty area on the Start screen, click All Apps on the app bar, select the printer name, and then click Utilities. ● Windows 7, Windows Vista , and Windows XP: From the computer desktop, click Start, select All Programs , click HP, click the folder of your printer. 2. Use HP wireless direct With HP wireless direct, you can print wirelessly from a computer, smart phone, tablet, or other wireless-capable device—withou t connecting to an existing wireless network. When using HP wireless direct, note the following guidelines: ● Make sure your computer or mobil e device has the necessary software. If you are using a computer, make sure you have installed the p rinter software provided with the printer. ● If you are using a mobile device, make sure you have installed a compatible printing app. For more information about mobile printing, visit www.hp.com/global/us/en/eprint/ mobile_printing_apps.html. ● Make sure HP wireless direct is turned on in the printer and, i f necessary, security is enabled. For more information, see Turn on HP wireless direct on page 112. ● If you have not installed the HP printer software on the computer, connect to wireless direct first and then install the prin ter software. Select Wireless when prompted by the p rinter software for a connection type. ● Up to five computers and mobile devices can use the same HP wireless direct connection. ● HP wireless direct can be used while the printer is also connected to a computer using USB cable or to a network using a wireless connection. ● HP wireless direct c annot be used to conne ct a computer, mobile device, or printer to the Internet. From the printer con trol panel, touch (wireless direct). 2. User the slider next to HP Wireless Direct to turn wireless direct on or off. TIP:If you would like to use HP wire less direct with greater security and if the computer or mobile device supports WPA2 encryption, touch Security to enable or disable security. With security enabled, only users with the password can connect wire lessly to the printer. Without enabling security, anyone with a wireless device within the wir eless range of the printer can connect to the printer. 3. Touch Wireless Direct Name to display the wireless direct name. 4. If you have enabled security, touch Security Passcode to display the wireless direct password. TIP:You can also turn on HP wireless direct from the EWS. Print from a wireless-capable mobile device Make sure you have installed a co mpatible printing app on your mobile device. For more information, visit www.hp.com/global/us/en/eprint/mobile_printing_apps.html. 1. Make sure you have turned on HP wireless direct on the printer. For more information, see Turn on HP wireless direct on page 112. 2. Turn on the Wi-Fi connection on your mobile device. For more in formation, see the documentation provided wi th the mobile device. NOTE:If your mobile device does not support Wi-Fi, you are not able to use HP wireless direct. 3. From the mobile device, connect t o a new network. Use the process you normally use to connect to a new wireless networ k or hotspot. Choose the HP wireless direct name from the list of wireless networks shown such as HP-Print-**-Officejet Pro XXXX (where ** are the unique characters to identify your pr inter and XXXX is the printer mod el located on the printer). If HP wireless direct is turned on with security, enter the pas sword when prompted. 4. Print your document. Print from a wireless-capable computer With HP wireless direct, you can print wirelessly from a computer without connecting to an existing wireless network or using the HP printer software provided with the printer. Follow the instructions to print from your wireless-capable com puter. To print from a wireless-capable computer (Windows) 1.Make sure you have turned on HP wireless direct on the printer. For more information, see Turn on HP wireless direct on page 112. 2. Turn on the computer's Wi-Fi connection. For more information, see the documentation provided with the computer. NOTE: If your computer does not support Wi-Fi, you are not able to us e HP wireless direct. 3.From the computer, connect to a n ew network. Use the process you normally use to connect to a new wireless network or hotspot . Choose the HP wireless direct name from the list of wireless networks shown such as HP-Print-**-Officejet Pro XXXX (where ** are the unique characters to identify your printer and XXXX is the printer model located on the printer). If HP wireless direct is turned on with security, enter the pas sword when prompted. 4. Proceed to step 5 if the printe r has been installed and connect ed to the computer over a wireless network. If the printer has been installed and connected to your computer with a USB cable, follow the steps below to install the printer software using th e HP wireless direct connection. a. Depending on your operating s ystem, do one of the following: ● Windows 8 : Right-click an empty area on the Start screen, click All Apps on the app bar, select the printer name, and then click Utilities. ● Windows 7 , Windows Vista , and Windows XP : From the computer desktop, click Start, select All Programs , click HP, click the folder of your printer. b. c.When the Connection Options software screen appears, select Wireless. Select your HP printer software from the list of detected print ers. d. Follow the on-screen instructions. 5. Print your document. To print from a wireless-capable computer (OS X) 1.Make sure you have turned on HP wireless direct on the printer. For more information, see Turn on HP wireless direct on page 112. 2. Turn on AirPort. For more information, see the do cumentation provided by Apple. 3. Click the AirPort icon and choos e the HP wireless direct name, such as HP-Print-**-Officejet Pro XXXX (where ** are the unique characters to identify your printer a nd XXXX is the printer model located on the printer). If HP wireless direct is turned on with security, enter the pas sword when prompted. 4. Add the printer. a. In System Preferences , select Print & Fax or Print & Scan, depending on your operating system. b. Click + below the list of printers at the left. c.
