Information on ink cartridges and the printhead The following tips help maintain HP ink cartridges and ensure consistent print quality. ● The instructions in this user guide are for replacing ink cartr idges, and are not intended for first time installation. ● Keep all ink cartridges in the or iginal sealed packages until they are needed. ● Be sure to turn off the printer properly. For more information, see Turn the printer off on page 38. ● Store ink cartridges at room tem perature (15-35° C or 59-95° F). ● Do not clean the printhead unneces sarily. This wastes ink and shortens the life of the cartridges. ● Handle ink cartridges carefully. Dropping, jarring, or rough ha ndling during installation can cause temporary printing problems. ● If you are transporting the printer, do the following to preven t ink leaking from the printer or other damage from occurring to the printer: ◦ Make sure you turn off the printer by pressing (the Power button). Wait until all sounds of internal motion stop before unplu gging the printer. For more information, see Turn the printer off on page 38. ◦ Make sure you leave the ink cartridges installed. ◦ The printer must be transported sitting flat; it should not be placed on its side, back, front, or top. CAUTION: HP recommends that you replace a ny missing cartridges as soon as possible to avoid print quality issues and possibl e extra ink usage or damage to the ink system. Never turn off the printer when ink cartridges are missing. Related topics ● Check the estimated ink levels on page 97 96 Chapter 7 Work with ink cartridges ENWW
Check the estimated ink levels You can check the estimated ink levels from the printer software or from the printer control panel. For information about using these tools, see Printer management tools on page 115 and Use the printer control panel on page 9. You can also print the Printer Status page to view this info rmation (see Printer status report on page 125). To check the estimated ink levels from the printer control panel 1. From the printer contr ol panel display, touch and slide your finger across the screen and then touch Setup. 2. Touch Tools, and then touch Display Estimated Ink Levels . NOTE:Ink level alerts and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink alert, consider having a replacement cartridg e available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not have to replace the cartridges until prompte d to do so. NOTE:If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another printer, th e ink level indicator might be inaccurate or unavailable. NOTE:Ink from the cartridges is used in the printing process in a number of different ways, including in the initialization process, which prepares the pri nter and cartridges for printing, and in printhead servicing, which keeps print nozzles clear and ink flowing smoothly. In addition, some residual ink is left in the cartridge after it is used. For more information, see www.hp.com/go/ inkusage. ENWW Check the estimated ink levels 97
Printing with black or color ink only For regular usage, this product is not designed to print using only the black cartridge when the color cartridges are out of ink. However, your printer is designed to let you print as long as possible when your cartridges start to run out of ink. When there is sufficient ink in the printhead, the printer will offer you the use of black ink only when one or more of the color cartrid ges are out of ink, and the use of color ink only when the black cartridge is out of ink. ● The amount that you can print usi ng black or color ink only is limited, so have replacement ink cartridges available when you are printing with black or color ink only. ● When there is no long er sufficient ink to print you will get a message that one or more cartridges are depleted, and you will need t o replace the depleted cartridges before you resume printing. CAUTION:While ink cartridges are not dam aged when left outside of the printer, the printhead does need to have all cartridges ins talled at all times after the printer is set up and in use. Leaving one or more cartridge slots empty for an extended period may lead to p rint quality problems and possibly damage the printhead. If you have recently left a cartridge out of the printer for an extended period, or if you have had a recent paper ja m, and have noticed poor print quality, clean the printhead. Anonymous usage information storage The HP cartridges used with this printer contain a memory chip that assists in the operation of the printer. In addition, this memor y chip stores a limited set of anonymous information about the usage of the printer, which might include the following: the number o f pages printed using the cartridge, the page coverage, frequency of print ing, and the printing modes used. This information helps HP design future printers to meet our cu stomers' printing needs. The data collected from the cartridge memory chip does not contain infor mation that can be used to identify a customer or user of the cartridge or their printer. HP collects a sampling of the memory chips from cartridges retu rned to HP's free return and recycling program (HP Planet Partners: www.hp.com/recycle). The memory chips f rom this sampling are read and studied in order to improve future HP printers. HP partners who assist in recycling this cartridge might have access to this data, as well. Any third party possessing the car tridge might have access to the anonymous information on the memory chip. If you prefer to not allow access to this informat ion, you can render the chip inoperable. However, after you render the mem ory chip inoperable, the cartridge cannot be used in an HP printer. If you are concerned about providi ng this anonymous information, you can make this information inaccessible by turnin g off the memory chip's ability to collect the printer's usage information. To disable the usage information function 1.From the printer contr ol panel, touch and slide your finger acr oss the screen and then touch Setup . 2. Select Tools, and then touch Cartridge Chip Information . 3. Touch OK to disable usage information collection. NOTE: To turn the usage information func tion on, restore the factory defaults. For more information about how to restore the defaults, see Restore defaults on page 39. NOTE: You can continue to use the cart ridge in the HP printer if you turn off the memory chip's ability to collect the printer's usage information. ENWW Anonymous usage information storage 103
