6-22Maintenance Chapter 6 Replacing a BJ Tank in the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge The LCD display will indicate which BJ tank in the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge needs replacing. Leave the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge in the MultiPASS when replacing a BJ tank. 1. Make sure the MultiPASS is plugged in. 2. Open the document tray.Message Action BLACK INK EMPTYReplace the BCI-21 Black BJ Tank (right tank). COLOR INK EMPTYReplace the BCI-21 Color BJ Tank (left tank).

Touching these parts may adversely affect operation of the unit and /or cause print quality deterioration. 6-24Maintenance Chapter 6 4. Press the cartridge button . ❑The cartridge holder moves to the center of the unit. The color BJ tank is on the left, and the black BJ tank is on the right. Do not try to manually move or stop the cartridge holder as this may damage the MultiPASS. The MultiPASS includes an automatic protection feature that helps keep it from overheating. If the cartridge holder does not move, unplug the MultiPASS and let it cool for several minutes. Chapter 6 Maintenance6-25 Maintenance 5. Remove the empty BJ tank by grasping the tab on the top of the empty BJ tank and pulling forward to release it. Then lift out the BJ tank from the BJ cartridge. 6. Dispose of the BJ tank properly. ❑You may want to place it in a plastic bag to keep any residual ink from spilling. 7. 6-26Maintenance Chapter 6 8. Slide the new BJ tank into the empty slot. 9. Press firmly on the tab on top of the new BJ tank, in the direction shown below, until the tank snaps into place. Press the cartridge button . ❑The cartridge holder moves to its home position on the right side of the unit and begins cleaning the print head. This process takes about 55 seconds. 12. Close the printer cover. 13. Close the document tray. Do not try to manually move or stop the cartridge holder as this may damage the MultiPASS. Unplug the MultiPASS only when it is in standby mode (date and Receive mode shown in the LCD display), and the cartridge holder is in its home position on the right. If you unplug the unit while it is printing, or move the cartridge holder from its home position, the BJ cartridge will not be capped and can dry out. c n
6-28Maintenance Chapter 6 Storing a BJ Cartridge Once a BJ cartridge is unwrapped, its print head must be kept from drying out, or it can clog and fail to work properly. A BJ cartridge installed in the MultiPASS is protected from drying out by automatically moving to the home position on the right side of the unit and capping itself. If you remove a partially used BJ cartridge from the MultiPASS, store it in the SB- 21 Ink Cartridge Storage Box provided with your unit. 1. Press on the release tab and open the cover. Hold the BJ cartridge by its sides only. 6-30Maintenance Chapter 6 Transporting the MultiPASS Whenever you plan to transport the MultiPASS, you need to prepare it so it will not be damaged during the move. 1. DO NOT remove the BJ cartridge from the unit. 2. Make sure the cartridge holder is in its home position on the right side of the unit. ❑If it is not in its home position, press the cartridge button (inside the unit. 3. With the cartridge holder on the right side of the unit, tape the BJ cartridge and cartridge holder to the side of the unit. 4. Disconnect the power cord. 5. Disconnect the telephone, extension phone or answering machine (if using them), the telephone line, and the USB to Parallel cable to the Macintosh. 6. Remove the document support. 7. Make sure the document tray is closed. 8. Replace all tapes and shipping materials you removed when you first unpacked the MultiPASS. 9. Pack the MultiPASS and all its components into its original shipping carton. Do not remove the BJ cartridge from the MultiPASS or ship a BJ cartridge or a BJ tank from which you have removed the protective cap. An opened BJ cartridge or BJ tank that is not installed in the MultiPASS or the Ink Cartridge Storage Box may leak, and the print head may dry out. Also, if you do not tape the BJ cartridge to the side to the unit, ink may spill into the unit. If you no longer have the shipping carton your MultiPASS came in, pack the unit in a suitably sized, sturdy cardboard box, using bubble wrap or other suitable packing materials. (If you use foam peanuts, be sure to wrap the unit in plastic first to prevent the packing materials from entering any opening on the unit.) n
