Improve print quality 119 Solve a problem
To improve print quality 1.Make sure you are using genuine HP cartridges. NOTE:HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP supplies. Printer service or repairs required as a result of using a non-HP supply will not be covered under warranty. If you believe you purchased genuine HP ink cartridges, go to: www.hp.com/go/anticounterfeit HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cartridges. Genuine HP ink cartridges are designed and tested with HP printers to help you easily produce great results, time after time. CAUTION:HP recommends that you do not remove an ink cartridge until a replacement is ready to install. 2.Check the estimated ink levels to determine if the cartridges are low on ink. Low ink levels can cause poor print quality. If the print cartridges are low on ink consider replacing them. For more information, see Check the estimated ink levels. 3.Check to make sure you are using the correct paper type for your print job. HP recommends that you use HP papers or any other paper type that is appropriate for the product. Make sure only one type of paper is loaded at a time. Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat. For best results when printing images, use HP Advanced Photo Paper. 4.Check the print settings to make sure you have selected the appropriate paper type and print quality for your print job. Settings you can check include: • Check the print quality setting and make sure it is not set too low. • Print the image with a high print quality setting, such as Best or Maximum dpi. 5.Check the ink cartridges to make sure they are installed properly. The orange tab should be removed and the label on the top of the cartridge should be slightly torn. For information about checking the ink cartridges to make sure they are installed properly, see Replace the cartridges. 6.Print a print quality report. To print a print quality report a. Load letter or A4 unused plain white paper into the input tray. b.Press Setup. Chapter 12 120 Solve a problem Solve a problem
c. Press the down arrow button to highlight Tools, and then press OK. d. Press the down arrow button to highlight Print Quality Report, and then press OK. The product prints a print quality report that you can use to diagnose print quality issues. 7.Evaluate the print quality report for defects such as streaked or faded color bars or ragged text. To evaluate the print quality report a. Check the ink levels shown on the page. If a cartridge shows very low ink levels and you find the print quality unacceptable, consider replacing that ink cartridge. Print quality typically deteriorates as cartridges run out of ink. NOTE:Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace the ink cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable. b. Look at the color bars in the middle of the page. The bars should be solid, have sharp edges, and extend with uniform color all the way across the page. • If any of the color bars are irregularly streaked, lighter on one side, or contain one or more streaks of a different color, refer to the following steps. Figure 12-2 Color bars - irregularly streaked or faded bar (top bar) Figure 12-3 Color bars - color mixing (yellow bar contains magenta streaks) ◦Check the estimated ink levels in the cartridges. ◦Check if the cartridge corresponding to the streaked bar has the orange tab removed. ◦Reinstall the cartridge and make sure all of the cartridges are properly installed. ◦Clean the printhead, and then print this diagnostic page again. ◦If cleaning the printhead does not solve this print quality issue, replace the cartridge corresponding to the streaked bar. NOTE:If replacing the cartridge does not solve this print quality issue, contact HP support for service. • If any of the color bars show regular white streaks, refer to the following steps. ◦Check for the PHA TTOE line below the color bars. If the line reads 0, align the printer. ◦If the PHA TTOE line on the diagnostic page shows a different value or aligning does not help, clean the printhead. NOTE:If cleaning the printhead does not solve this print quality issue, contact HP support for service. Chapter 12 122 Solve a problem Solve a problem
c. Look at the large text above the alignment pattern. The type should be sharp and clear. Figure 12-5 Sample text area - jagged text • If the text is uneven and ragged at one end, clean the printhead, and then print this diagnostic page again. If this occurs right after a new black cartridge is installed, the automatic device servicing routines may solve the problem in a day or so. In the HP Solution Center, click Settings. c.In the Print Settings area, click Printer Toolbox. d. Click the Device Services tab. e. Click Clean the printhead. f. Follow the prompts until you are satisfied with the quality of the output, and then click Done. There are several levels of cleaning, and a new test page prints after each level. Each stage lasts about two minutes, uses one sheet of paper, and uses an increasing amount of ink. After each stage, review the quality of the test page. You should only initiate the next phase of cleaning if the test page still shows streaks or fading. If print quality still seems poor after you complete both stages of cleaning, try aligning the printer. If print quality problems persist after cleaning and aligning, contact HP support. 9.If the print quality report has alignment errors such as crooked vertical lines, align the printer. To align the printer a. Load letter or A4 unused plain white paper into the input tray. b.Press Setup. c. Press the down arrow button to highlight Tools, and then press OK. d. Press the down arrow button to highlight Align Printer, and then press OK. The printer prints a test page, aligns the printhead, and calibrates the printer. 10.Look at the large text above the alignment pattern. The type should be sharp and clear. Figure 12-10 Sample text area - expected result If the text is uneven and ragged at one end, and a new black cartridge was just installed, the automatic device servicing routines may solve the problem in a day or so. Figure 12-11 Sample text area - uneven ink distribution You can also clean the printhead from the control panel to resolve this problem. However, this will use more ink. To clean the printhead from the control panel a. Press Setup. b. Press the down arrow button to highlight Tools, and then press OK. c. Press the down arrow button to highlight Clean Printhead, and then press OK. The product cleans the printhead. 11.If there are no defects on the print quality report, then there is nothing wrong with the ink cartridges and ink system. Therefore, you do not need to replace the cartridges or printhead. Recheck steps 1- 4 in this procedure. Some additional things you can check include: • If the image is blurry or fuzzy, check the image resolution. Try using a higher resolution image. If you are printing a photo or graphic, and the resolution is too low, it will be fuzzy when printed. If a digital photo or rasterized graphic has been resized, it can be blurry or fuzzy when printed. • If the problem is a horizontal band of distortion at the bottom of photo prints, print the photo with a high print quality setting, such as Best or Maximum dpi. You can also try to rotate the photo 180 degrees in a software program to see if this helps. You might need to choose a lower print quality setting if colors are running into each other. Or, choose a higher setting if you are printing a high-quality photo, and then make sure photo paper such as HP Advanced Photo Paper is loaded in the paper tray. For information on using the maximum dpi mode, see Print using the maximum dpi. • Make sure the margin settings for the document do not exceed the printable area of the product. 12.If the previous steps did not resolve the problem, try to determine which ink cartridge is causing the problem and replace it. Each cartridge color should correspond to a color on the print quality page. If that color showed defects, the corresponding cartridge is the problem cartridge. For information about replacing cartridges, see Replace the cartridges. 13.If the previous steps did not resolve the problem, you might need to replace the printhead or service the printer. Contact HP support for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support. If prompted, choose your country/region, and then click Contact HP for information on calling for technical support.
