2SettingupiLO Overview TheiLOdefaultsettingsenableyoutousemostfeatureswithoutadditionalconfiguration.However, theconfigurationflexibilityofiLOenablescustomizationformultipleenterpriseenvironments.This chapterdiscussestheinitialiLOsetupsteps.Forinformationaboutadditionalconfigurationoptions, see“ConfiguringiLO”(page37). Completetheinitialsetupsteps: 1.Decidehowyouwanttohandlenetworkingandsecurity. Formoreinformation,see“PreparingtosetupiLO”(page18). 2.ConnectiLOtothenetwork. Formoreinformation,see“ConnectingiLOtothenetwork”(page20). 3.IfyouarenotusingdynamicIPaddressing,configureastaticIPaddressbyusingiLORBSU ortheiLO4ConfigurationUtility. Formoreinformation,see“InstallingtheiLOdrivers”(page34). PreparingtosetupiLO BeforesettingupaniLOmanagementprocessor,youmustdecidehowtohandlenetworkingand security.ThefollowingquestionscanhelpyouconfigureiLO: HowshouldiLOconnecttothenetwork? Foragraphicalrepresentationandexplanationoftheavailableconnections,see“ConnectingiLO tothenetwork”(page20). Typically,iLOisconnectedtothenetworkthroughoneofthefollowing: •AcorporatenetworkthatboththeNICandtheiLOportareconnectedto.Thisconnection enablesaccesstoiLOfromanywhereonthenetworkandreducestheamountofnetworking hardwareandinfrastructurerequiredtosupportiLO.However,onacorporatenetwork,traffic canhinderiLOperformance. •AdedicatedmanagementnetworkwiththeiLOportonaseparatenetwork.Aseparate networkimprovesperformanceandsecuritybecauseyoucanphysicallycontrolwhich workstationsareconnectedtothenetwork.Aseparatenetworkalsoprovidesredundantaccess totheserverifahardwarefailureoccursonthecorporatenetwork.Inthisconfiguration,iLO cannotbeaccesseddirectlyfromthecorporatenetwork. 18SettingupiLO
HowwilliLOacquireanIPaddress? ToaccessiLOafterconnectingittothenetwork,theiLOmanagementprocessormustacquirean IPaddressandsubnetmaskbyusingeitheradynamicorstaticprocess. •AdynamicIPaddressissetbydefault.iLOobtainstheIPaddressandsubnetmaskfromDNS orDHCPservers.Thismethodisthesimplest. •AstaticIPaddressisusedifDNSorDHCPserversarenotavailableonthenetwork.Astatic IPaddresscanbeconfiguredbyusingiLORBSUortheiLO4ConfigurationUtility.Formore information,see“ConfiguringastaticIPaddressbyusingiLORBSU”(page21)or“Configuring astaticIPaddressbyusingtheiLO4ConfigurationUtility”(page23). IMPORTANT:IfyouplantouseastaticIPaddress,youmusthavetheIPaddressbefore startingtheiLOsetupprocess. Whataccesssecurityisrequired,andwhatuseraccountsandprivilegesare needed? iLOprovidesseveraloptionstocontroluseraccess.Useoneofthefollowingmethodstoprevent unauthorizedaccess: •Localaccounts—Upto12useraccountscanbestorediniLO.Thisisidealforsmall environmentssuchaslabsandsmall-sizedormedium-sizedbusinesses. •Directoryservices—UsethecorporatedirectorytomanageiLOuseraccess.Thisisidealfor environmentswithalargenumberofusers.Ifyouplantousedirectoryservices,consider enablingatleastonelocaladministratoraccountforalternateaccess.
